The Dark Mod: Free open source Thief-inspired game with in-progress VR mod

Software

Started in the mid-late 2000s as a Doom3 total conversion mod, when Doom3's engine went open source the game was fully set free. Its an incredible homage to the classic Thief and Thief 2 Metal Age games, some of the best stealth games ever created. There are nearly 150 missions created for the game so far!

It is most likely one of the most amazing collaborative efforts I've ever seen in the open source gaming community.

There is currently a rough in-progress VR mod thats made quite a bit of progess, but I'm hoping some folks here can pitch in and get it over the finish line as its mostly just missing touch controls but is otherwise very playable.

Here is the main site where you can download the game and missions: https://www.thedarkmod.com/

Here is the vr source fork with alpha releases: https://github.com/fholger/thedarkmodvr

The creator of the VR fork is u/fholger and I'm sure they'd appreciate any help that could be offered, even if its just testing and knowledge that their work is appreciated!

PS: I am not affiliated with TDM or its VR fork in any way, I'm just a huge fan!

This could be ported to the Quest as well as it's using the Doom 3 engine, would be dope to play this on Q1 to get those nice blacks.

Realistically this probably wouldn't happen. The way TDM uses dynamic shadows is much more complex than Doom 3 did, and as such the requirements for smooth performance would be significantly higher. You never know though, maybe with a low enough render target it could work, even if blocky.

I didn't think about that. Regardless, I hope we get this beauty in VR.

Yeah, there’s no way this would work on a Quest, sorry.

Oh man this would be amazing!

It already is pretty great. Motion controls would take it to the next level.
