First time VR owner review [part 2] - 10 days later

Review

I did my first initial review here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HPReverb/comments/k0cirt/first_time_vr_owner_review/

And I wanted to let you guys know if I still stand by it after 10 days of usage. I also recently purchased a 2nd hand Vive, so I can try out Lighthouse tracking and compare.

tl;dr of part 1:

  • Didn't run into any problems (using X570 mobo too)
  • Display good
  • Speaker good
  • Tracking not great, but usable

So, do I still stand by my initial experience? For the most part, yea.

1. Tracking

So lets start with this, since most people probably want to know about it. I've grown used to using the Reverb G2 tracking and it's just a really complicated thing to explain. I would say, the tracking is good enough for most games and for a lot of games, it's all you need. I did some additional testing and with more games this time around: The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners; Vivecraft (Java Minecraft VR); I expect you to die and even more VR Chat and Beat Saber.

For Vivecraft, everything worked really great. If you can put up with your arms being in a weird position when you don't need them (e.a.: you're resting your arms to your side), then everything else works great. I did dual wield swords fighting and even managed to do archery with it. Absolutely no problems with it.

For I expect you to die, same story. The tracking part, everything just worked, no problems at all. The only thing I have issues with are more keybinding/control issue and not tracking itself.

For VR Chat, I want to adjust my answers a bit. VR Chat, functionally, it's more than good enough. However, if you are concerned about how you look to others OR if you stand behind mirrors a lot OR you love using your hands and arms to do gestures while talking OR you just like roleplaying; then the small tracking volume just isn't good enough for it. The blind spot makes the area you can move your arm very limited and your arms will go into a weird position when you're idling. It'll look weird (to others) and if you're concerned about how you look, this isn't the tracking you want.

For The Walking Dead game, it was surprisingly good (aside the melee combat). You had to reach behind your shoulder or your sides to grab stuff, like backpacks, weapons, etc. It actually just worked. The only thing I had issues with, were the Melee weapons. It felt really hard to use, but I can't tell if the game is just clunky or if I just plain suck. I don't know if tracking could be the cause of the clunky melee mechanic. One of the reason is that the melee combat is dependent on the swing distance of your melee weapon and NOT the speed it travels. (In Minecraft, you can just make super small swings and it'll just do full damage I believe). This means that big, precise, overswing will work better with melee weapons, but it also means your controllers will go into the blind spot of the Reverb G2. I wanted to try out with the Vive controllers to compare and nail down the issue, but I couldn't get past the intro screen where it tells me to reset the HMD view, by pressing a button that the Vive controller doesn't have. The melee swings also have, which seems like, a 'limit' to how fast it can travel. So if you swing faster in real life, it doesn't translate 1 on 1 in the game itself. An issue that Vivecraft doesn't have. So I 'suspect' the tracking is fine for it, I just suck at it.

Beat Saber Ok now this is a bit more complicated to explain. I can only tell you my experience up to Expert mode difficulty, since I'm super new to Rythm games and VR and I can't challenge Expert+ at all. (Expert K/DA is the only song atm that I can get full combo and S rank currently). I have the HTC Vive for its lighthouse tracking, so I can do a direct comparison. It definitely 'feels' easier and more consistent to play Beat Saber with my Vive controllers (even though I have been playing Beat Saber with my G2 controllers every day and I only JUST started playing with my Vive controllers!), but the reason for it is a bit more complicated than 'just better tracking' in my opinion. First of all, the weight balance, the size and the vibration of the Vive controllers just feels way more natural and better for Beat Saber. That kind of 'feel' just makes Beat Saber more comfortable to play. But I think one of the biggest reason is because with the G2 controller, I am ALWAYS concerned and aware of the small tracking volume. And that can be pretty distracting while I play. I can get similar scores and full combo with the G2, but it definitely requires a bit more, mentally. I also have to constantly (over)compensate so I can make sure the tracking will go through (making sure the controllers are in view as much as possible). I don't have to worry about these things with the Vive controllers.

Beat Saber (at least up to Expert mode), is definitely doable, but Lighthouse Tracking will absolutely just give you much better experience.

2 Display

I'll give a bit more information on the display with my experience. Yes, it is very pretty, but people are concerned about 'sweet spots' and I'll tell you my experience with it. So there are 2 parts when we talk about 'sweet spots',

  1. how easy it is to readjust your HMD to get the right sharpness
  2. how much % of the display is actually sharp when everything is said and done.

It is VERY easy to find the right spot for sharpness for me, (though my HMD tend to sag down after some time, so I usually have to readjust after a while. Maybe I should strap it tighter next time).

But, like many people said, not the entire display is sharp. The edges of the display is definitely blurry and if you move your eyes to the side, you will notice it. But is this a problem? It really depends on what you're playing and using it for. If you look at a small area, then the blurriness doesn't matter. For example, when I play Beat Saber, I really only focus on the small part what's ahead of me. When I play VRChat, I only look at people's faces when I talk, and don't pay much attention what's happening around us.

But when I look at a big screen, for example watching a movie or reading a large notice board, it does get in the way of the experience. It's still usable, but it's VERY noticeably in cases like that. I don't mind it personally, but I don't know if other people are the same; you gotta try it out yourself and see.

3. Speakers

I still think it's great. It's good enough that I don't want to bother grabbing my headphones. But it might not be good for enthusiasts or audiophiles. It definitely is worse than a dedicated quality headphones (and I have them myself), but most people aren't audiophiles. Don't listen to people that say that the speakers are shit, because they aren't. You know fully well if you're an audiophile or not.

4. Other stuff

Honestly, the biggest annoyance I have is the keybinding-related stuff. The WMR is usable, but definitely not polished at all and it sometimes just doesn't play nice with SteamVR. Having to try and make keybinding work is probably the most annoying thing about this whole thing, but once you do get it work, it is fine.

I also kind of appreciate the AA batteries and build in tracking (without lighthouse) a bit more now. Ever since I get the Vive, it can feel a bit annoying to do that extra few steps, which I don't have to do with the Reverb G2. The extra steps are like: turning on my lighthouses; (plugging in dongles, or in my case the Vive HMD itself); having two controllers that needs to recharged at your power outlet (or wherever you want to charge them).

I kind of enjoy of just powering on my Reverb G2 and just immediately, start playing (implying you already have batteries still inside the controllers).

I like putting my controllers away when I'm done playing, so it's nice to just have rechargeable AA batteries at my power outlet, instead of having 2 controllers. Depending on what game I play, I might not bother with Vive lighthouse tracking, since those require a few more extra steps to start up and clean up.

Edit: Also the vibration rumble still sucks lol. After experiencing with the Vive (which doesn't seem that amazing either), hitting cubes in Beat Saber with G2 controllers felt like hitting a cube full with air.

In conclusion

I definitely don't regret buying the Reverb G2. I don't think the Lighthouse Tracking is worth the extra investment for your G2, unless you really have specific use cases for it (like me, with VR Chat and Beat Saber). And I still use my Reverb G2 daily (almost as soon as I come back home from work).

I hope the rest of you get to experience it as well soon, problems free.

Haha, I hope it makes people's choice easier when deciding on the G2.

To be honest, I actually don't even really recommend the G2 to my friends (who are VR Virgins); I usually tell them: The Quest 2 is probably better value for its money. Unless you really need the Reverb G2 for something more specific, the Quest 2 seems to be good enough.

And the Index is great too. Reverb G2 is kind of in that weird spot in the middle. The display is really great though.

I bought a Q2 while waiting for the G2 and love it!

sockchaser•

same its really nice to be wireless for fitness games like ToTF.

Can't wait for my G2 for that uninterrupted, uncompressed PCVR tho!

Thanks for this Review!

I’m also hoping to use this headset for my first vr experience and one thing I was worried about especially in vrchat was how the game runs and if you could share your experience with it I’d really appreciate it.

I have a 1080 Ti. It used to run fine, but ever since the update last night, the FPS seems to be worse now. Especially if you turn on the mirror, it definitely FPS stutters. (It wasn't like that before the update)

Tracking wise: like I've said, functionally, it works well enough. If you want to grab something, point at something, etc, it does work. But if you like to sit in front of the mirror, the tracking volume just isn't good enough. You will constantly see yourself with the arms in the incorrect position. And if you're concerned about presenting yourself to others, it's not good for that either. Roleplaying with it is also pretty limiting, since there are movements you can't do with it. Other people don't seem to mind too much about your lack of tracking though, so it's really personal thing mostly.

Control wise, it's pretty bad, out of the box. You do need to rebind the controls, because it's not optimized to use gestures. (I didn't really bother with the controlbindings, since SteamVR was pretty clunky with my WMR).

Oh, I forgot to mention it, but thanks for reminding me: There was/is a 'bug?' with WMR VR in VRChat; it seems that the draw distance might be bugged. Objects very far in the background isn't rendered on your screen, but it works if you look through the camera or mirror. I don't know if the last night update has patched this, I haven't tested (and I'm not optimistic about it).

Overall, it does what it needs to do in VRChat, but if you're more into the roleplaying part, it's better to get an additional Lighthouse tracking.

The visuals are amazing with it though, I love looking at other people's textures on their model lol. Things far away will always be blurry, because of the anti-aliasing going on in VR-Chat. So that won't change much, no matter what VR you get. Reading things up close is nice, but the closer the thing you get, the more of the display screen it covers; so you have to deal with the edge blur again.

Ty for the reply and one last thing I'm curious about is whether you had to roll back to an older version of nvidia drivers or not and if you haven't do you think you'll experiment with that to see if it changes performance?

CakeMagicOP•

I think I've heard people say that it affects the RTX 30 series. I'm not sure if the 10 series is affected by it.

I don't think it will change, since everyone in VR (my friends) said they all had FPS drops and none of them used the Reverb G2.

k ty for all the info mate really appreciate it and I've got a 1080ti so this helps put me to ease.

My biggest gripe is the horrible force feedback. Its shockingly bad. In fact it is so bad I cannot use it because that annoying noise it makes is louder than the sound in i.e. Beat Saber. Some people might not mind it but compared to Oculus Touch not even close.

So to me Tracking is no issue but the FF is. Feels like force rumble from the early 2000s.

1
CakeMagicOP•

At first, I thought it wasn't that bad when I used the G2 (but it was my first VR controller).

But using the Vive controller (which isn't even that good either) and then switching to the G2 controllers... It felt like hitting air cubes or something lol. I was SO unsatisfying.

What X570 board do you have?

1
CakeMagicOP•

Gigabyte Aorus Pro

I don't know if it matters, someone else has the same mobo here on this subreddit, he did get 7-14

1
DmceJosh•

If wonder if it could be a setting or bios version issue... I can't imagine why two people with the same board would have a different experience.

TheNimbleKindle•

I guess I'll test it with current drivers, if it doesn't work I'll update. But I doubt it's something like that. If so, HP would have found and communicated this fix by now.

Just wanted to say that Saints and Sinners melee is even clunky on my Q2. I think it even says in the game that it is more about wide motions instead of fast quick attacks. I always feel like I have to over exaggerate stabbings and such in the game. I don't think that is a tracking issue, but just a game issue.

WMR has a tracking speed limit where when you swing too quickly it underestimates the controller positions.

This is opposite of the Quest/Valve index where it tends to overswing. In table tennis on the quest your paddle will go upside down with a fast flick and on the G2 you'll flat out miss a shot from it not moving far enough.

90hz plus dynamic latency reduction on the quest 2 (coming around december) should reduce this probably by about 80%.

WMR will always have latency due to not calculating tracking internally but they can make better algorithms to fix this.

That's why people say boxing games are not working too well on the G2.

In echo arena they have a specific game optimization so that flicking quickly to toss a disc works well. This game is very broken on wmr

MikeTheShowMadden•

I have noticed the Quest 2 hitting the ball at 100 mph at times. I assume that was tracking picking back up quickly after being lost for some reason. But I've noticed that there is a lag or delay in the paddle from my real hand with the Quest 2 as you as describing to happen with the G2.

Also, FWIW, Boxing games also suck with the Quest 2 from my experience. Creed is almost unplayable as you have to swing way too hard to register a normal hit. Punching normally doesn't register, and I suspect that has to to with controller latency. I also can't throw well in most games with the Quest 2. I think Arizona Sunshine was the worst offender with this problem while other games could be adjusted to.

100 mph is 160.93 km/h

Are you playing native or with pcvr here? These games work flawless natively. You're buying all these pcvr games and not liking how they perform on PC when they have native quest equivalents.

Eleven table tennis has 6 things that make a great headset:

  1. Wireless
  2. Good FOV
  3. High Refresh Rate
  4. Good Controllers designed well for the game
  5. Great Tracking
  6. Comfort

If you look at other headsets on the market:

Valve index has good FOV, Refresh rate, comfort, but lacks great controllers (they're okay) and average tracking. That's like a 4/6

Quest 2 has wireless, semi-okay refresh rate, good controllers, tracking and semi-okay comfort after mods That's about a 4/6 but with the most important things (controllers and tracking) pushing it well over the edge. With the right comfort mods, quest might even be 4.5/6.

Reverb G2 has Semi-okay refresh rate? That's like 0.5/6 Can't think of a headset that would perform worse except older windows MR or maybe vive cosmos?

Resolution makes 0 difference in that game as the top-rated player is on rift CV1.

Minimum-Departure•

Have you played creed or any of these other games on another vr headset? You have a quest 2 and creed and beat saber are both available as free demos to check out. Echo arena is the same so you can see how well tracking works.

I don't think it's that bad for pcvr because I see very high level beat saber players using oculus link with seemingly no issues. WolfVR is ranked #7 and plays over oculus link

1
AnAttemptReason•

This guy loves spreading missinformation. I played Saints almost exclusively melee and never noticed any issues. Also just played a boxing game as well, no issues.

The irony in his comment is that general Quest 2 latency is flat out worse even on link simply due to the extra proccessing needed. This is a hard limit they won't be able to overcome without moving to a native link.

Echo Arena is not even avalible on WMR headsets, no shit doesn't work well.

1
Minimum-Departure•

This is 100% true. What do you mean you can't play echo arena on wmr? Just like you can't play lone echo or asgard's wrath? Games that everyone wants to play even with the G2?

yeah latency is worse with Q2 BUT steamvr accounts for this in a way which does not affect controller skew. Not sure what they are doing but as long as you can get over the latency difference, the headset works flawless.

That's why there are top 100 beat saber players using oculus link. Even some are coming from cv1 which is god tier tracking.

Just because you don't know how tracking works does not mean I'm spreading misinformation. These things are well-known and documented. If this wasn't the case, then why is WMR specifically putting out a tracking fix for this early next year?

1
AnAttemptReason•

Those games litteraly dont support the WMR platform, its no suprise they have issues when you need to use a third party mod to get them to work. For this reason they are not good examples for WMR tracking quality.
