For anyone who has missed the stream. Please note that this is the edited version. NL will probably upload the full VOD soon.
Expanding a little on this - this vid just covers the 3 games that they reviewed together. Levy and NL also played a game where Levy was emulating an 1800 elo player. A lot of great discussion and banter in there as well as a fun story of NL making a kid cry in a tournament when he was younger :)
Do you remember when the chess story of making a kid cry happened ? I missed it.
Ryan mentioned the vod going up today during yesterday's stream (and not having any other Chess backlog lol). So I'm guessing it will be when the usual chess video time today.
"It's an eggcerpt" alright levy
big brain 1500mmr
Whoa awesome! This guy just started popping up on my YouTube feed since I started watching NLs chess series.
Same for me. I got into chess recently because of NL and have been watching quite a bit of GothamChess recently and then bam, they're doing a collaboration. Same thing happened with Mertzy in Rocket League actually. Started playing after NL's recent videos, watched some stuff by Mertzy and before I know it they're in a video together.
Wait, Mertzy and NL did a video together? Metzy is actually my favorite RL content creator, that's awesome.
I was waiting for this!!!
Chess is the most I have liked an NL series since XCOM maybe
I love seeing NL think

That clickbait title doing our dad justice.
extremely pogged content
its an eggcerpt of a 2 hour lesson. Lets go
Just inject the pog straight into my veins! It's been said before but GothamChess seems like a class act, I really hope they do another colab in the future as they've great chemistry.
My favorite low key moment of this.
NL picking up the lingo stuff like material, 'dark' square, etc.
This was super informative
Ive been trying to find the twitch vod of this but having a bit of trouble, could somebody help me out?
NL wasn't streaming and Gotham Chess's VODs are locked to subs.
I'd love to see Hafu do something like this with Egg. I know it's been a while since she's played but I think it would be fun.
Idk if NL wants to coach, doesn’t seem like his thing
He was sorta coaching Rob today

This is so freaking pogged. Don't even know what to do with myself.
Highly poggéd video. I hope they can do another collab again! Maybe another chess lesson in a few weeks or Levy can join NL's stream :)
It would be nice if NL uploaded a particularly amusing 30 second segment of this on his channel and linked the video in the description. I would have never known if I didnt use reddit that such content was available.
edit: stop downvoting me in retrospect, we didnt know he was eventually going to upload the whole thing
He will also upload the vod himself. Probably a few days later to not compete viewers with Levy
Levy: "Queen takes D4, and here you made the 2nd move that hurt a little physically"
Oh shit Chess is gonna get canned now.
All these flavors and you choose salt
Lol no salt here.
I neither watched/commented/nor cared about SK... just thought the fact that his teacher used the same phrase that triggered NL like a day later was amusing
The thing is, he went into this session with Levy expecting to get coached. Phrases like that and saying something was a misplay or whatever is expected and welcomed.
Phrases like that by random commenters on YouTube who are also accompanied with random other mean and unwelcomed comments on a YouTube comment section are not cool.
Man, people getting bent out of shape over a joke
Its pretty obviously not the same
Personally I feel like Levy has the best tutorial chess content on YouTube. Nakamaru is fun to watch when he memes or reacts to blunders, but his tutorials kind of amount to 'draw the owl'.
Levy is like the king of fundamentals. I highly recommend his channel if you want to get better at chess. He has these 10 minute rundowns of openings that are so useful. King's Indian is best opening btw.
Naroditsky (sp?) is also very good, highly recommend.
And John Bartholomew.
Its too bad John nowadays uploads so infrequently and more of his play rather than guides
I highly recommend John Bartholomew's fundamental chess concepts. It really helped me when I started learning chess after Pogchamps. If you often find yourself thinking I have no idea what to do in this situation or even I have no idea what to think about, his videos really helps to guide you how to think in a chess game.
Playlist here!
Ps. GothamChess/ Levy's videos are great too and he is very entertaining. Checks, captures, attacks!
Levy also does just an amazing job at making chess seem so fucking bad ass. Watching his recaps of the skilling open recently he made every game seem so hype. He clearly has a huge passion for the game and does a great job at sharing it.
I think a lot of chess content can get bogged down by taking the game so serious and making it be this old, gentlemen's game, but Levy does a great job at showcasing what makes the game great for new fans.
Levy does a really good job of subtly teaching theory without ever explicitly saying it.

Succinctly describes my reasoning for when to castle though
Vampire opening or nothing
(Or maybe the Jalalabad)
Bongcloud attack or bust (a lung)
I still think Eric Rosen would be a way better match
As someone who loves King's Indian but sucks, I really hope that last bit isn't a sarcastic injoke haha.
If I had to teach a new player one opening, the King's Indian's the way to go. It works as white and black, it's consistent vs most openings, dodges quite a lot of traps, it's easy to learn and remember and can be done in a fairly consistent order, it puts you in a solid position in the mid-game with an obvious plan in mind, it's not got a ton of different theory to learn.
It's just solid.
Sicilian #1 though
So, sicilian against e4 and king’s indian against d4? Got it
As long as you're willing to read 14,000 pages of sicilian theory, knock yourself out
Nah I've found the King's Indian to be the best opening for a newish player. It gets you through the early game almost 100% of the time so you can focus on the midgame.
The St Louis Chess Club lectures are fantastic as well. Eric Rosen did a few, he's an incredible teacher.
Yea this was an amazing collab and definitely was far more accessible to people who are new to the game than watching hypebeast Hikaru (who is also hilarious) play lol. Fantastic collab, and amazing channel. I hope one day they do a follow-up crossover!
Jerry is also amazing at teaching chess and has a whole series dedicated to it - https://www.youtube.com/user/ChessNetwork
