BF3/Origin question

Yesterday my DVD-ROM drive took a dump. Something involving a two year old and peanut butter....

I preordered BF3 through GameStop and I realize it requires Origin for CD key registration or some such silliness. So my question is simple: Can I activate my GameStop copy on Origin and then download the client, or am I going to have to buy another DVD drive?

I would think you'd be able to activate it on Origin, but drives are like $20, so you should get a new one anyways.

A DVD drive is like $25. You're gonna need one eventually.

Yes, you can. You will need the activation key that comes with the game.

I would think so, but there is no way of knowing until it is released.

They already said it's possible. You can active any EA game on origin as long as you have the activation key.

Except BF2. I tried and tried with Origin support. They even gave me another key. It wouldn't work either.

You can't do it for 1942 & Expansions as well as Vietnam. If this was possible, I would be able to play Vietnam. I played that so much the cd got destroyed :(

Yes you can activate it on Origin. A DICE developer confirmed that in a tweet.

You can activate most EA games released 2009 or later (or is it 2010 or later?) on Origin, if you got them at retail or on Steam.

You will be able to activate it. But owning a physical copy does not mean you get the digital download also. You WILL need to buy a DVD-ROM drive if you want to play BF3. The only other way would be cancelling your GameStop pre-order and pre-ordering the digital download on Origin.

You WILL be able to download it from Origin with the copy in hand.

Don't listen to these other guys. This was confirmed by multiple of the devs through their twitters.

Basically a guy is buying two physical copies, one for himself and another for his friend who is away. He wanted to make sure that he could give the code to his friend and he'd be able to download the game through origin. He can.

What does this mean to you? No worries, go pick up the game, insert the code into your origin account and begin downloading. :)

However it might be in your best interest to cancel over at gamestop and pre-order through origin and save yourself the trouble and gain some more perks? Your call :)

The big question is whether or not you'll be able to DOWNLOAD the game after activating it on Origin. I'm betting the answer is no. Otherwise, what is the incentive of ordering it on Origin if you could just go out and buy the physical copy and get a free digital Origin copy?

In situations like these, think about who you're dealing with.. EA.

You vastly underestimate the attractiveness of instant gratification.
