[TOMT][HISTORY][Chinese/Japanese] Name of a challenging final test a scribe would take to prove themselves.

Solved

I remember reading about this in a book as a kid, in the You Wouldn't Want To Be a _____ series.

Apparently there was some sort of multi-day exam wherein scribes would be locked in a room for 3-4 days, and were expected to reproduce all unique characters in the more than 50,000 character language. Not sure if that number is accurate, but you get the idea. Lots of memorization for them.

The other details I remember was that the scribe had to provide their own food, ink, and parchment. And that the stakes and cost was so high, that they would oftentimes write a cheat sheet on the inside of their clothes to help them with some of the tricker characters.

Any other information relating to this besides the name of this test would also be appreciated. Trying to create some worldbuilding stuff for a DnD campaign with it, and thought the idea was just downright perfect for a scribe NPC that has already shown up.

Was it the You Wouldn't Want to Be a Pyramid Builder?

One of the jobs listed is scribe, and there's a chapter titled "Scribes, Scribes, Scribes".

Digging around a bit more, it seems the work the aspiring scribes copied for a test or practice could have been "The Instructions of Dua-Khety" aka "The Satire of the Trades".
