Renfrow takes hard helmet to helmet shot

If that’s legal then the rules need to be changed. I thought he legit died
[deleted]
He looked limp when they flipped him over but he held out his arms to get picked up so hopefully it’s just a concussion. Which is obviously still shitty but at least he didn’t break his neck
You know it was bad when "hopefully it's only a concussion" is used
Yep. These types of hits are just unacceptable in a league that claims to care about player safety
It looks a little like a fencing response, a response that may happen being concussed which we've seen happen plenty of time in the NFL.
The player that caused this should be done for the season and one step father down the Burfict way.
His arms were already pretty stretched and they don't seem to move voluntarily.
I'm pretty sure that was the fencing response
Here it is... The response in every concussion thread.
I thought he legit died
When I saw his neck bend that far with completely flaccid neck muscles I thought for sure that I was watching someone become paralyzed

Bullshit hit. Hope he’s okay.
I think the rules need to be changed, but they also need to stop runners from lowering their heads. Before he gets hit he lowers his head and goes headfirst. Even if the other guy doesn’t also lower his head, his head is still going to snap when it collides with him.
It's similar to how boxing gloves make fighting more dangerous.
Any person who has spent some time on a football field in football equipment is going to develop a reflex to lower the head and raise the shoulders. That's where you have the most protection. Plus, if you have the ball, going into the fetal position is the best way to maintain protection and doing so naturally puts your head out in front of you.
The problem is never the runner curling up defensively.
Here's the problem: Pause the clip at 26 seconds. You see the guy coming in to make the "tackle"? His form is absolute dogshit. The crown of his helmet is aimed at the runner. He's staring at the fucking turf so he has no fucking clue what he's hitting. His arms are loose, at his sides. He's not tackling, he's turning himself into a fucking missile. Where exactly do you want to take that kind of hit on your body while being told to stand up or you lose yards? The solar plexus? The ribs? No, it's targeting and the NFL has allowed this dogshit "tackling" form to become an epidemic among defenders.
I'll give you another example here (pause it before it plays): Bengals' player is coming in trying to make a "tackle" with the crown of his helmet aimed at the runner, his eyesight is firmly staring at the turf so he can't see what he's hitting, arms again loose by his side. End result of this "tackle" is that Dawson Knox stiff arms him into the shadow realm while Jackson makes an actual tackle with his arms.
It's legalized targeting for defenders, get a free shot to try and end someone's career
I don’t disagree that it’s dangerous. I absolutely do. I think if they can get it out of the game, they should.
It just seems like such a core part of the game that it’s going to be difficult to issue rules to do away with it.
Essentially we’re just talking about doing what you’re supposed to in the situation. If you’re on defense, hit the guy carrying the ball as soon as possible so he gets fewer yards and as hard as possible so there’s a chance you cause a fumble and get possession.
If you’re on offense, keep the ball and get it up the field as far as you can as fast as you can.
Given those conditions, it just seems like you’ll inevitably wind up with players torpedoing at each other.
Runners will not stop lowering their heads. They use their helmets as protection when going down.
It doesn't really look like he lowered his head. He had people grab him split second before the hit when he was pushing forward and his lower body didn't go anywhere while his upper body did and went forward which is what caused his upper body to go lower.
He actually lowers his head before any contact, then it lowers a little bit more after contact, then he gets blown up.
other than eliminating special teams there isnt much you can do. You cant have a contact sport based around tackling and expect every tackle to be safe.
Yeah punts and kick returns are the most dangerous plays in football
When people say “the NFL has gotten soft” these are the kind of hits they want to see more of.
Sad that Goodell hates Renfrow so much that he is happy this hit happened. Lazy and dishonest people always hate people that work hard and have integrity.
Really thought he broke his neck
Still pretty sure your neck shouldn't bend like that.
Well who knows if he did fracture his neck? Wouldn't be the first one this week.
Tbh he should have been taken off in a neck brace and stabilized, but I'd imagine that the team on the sidelines didn't have the same view we got on TV, and he was pulled up to his feet almost immediately
That is exactly right. He should've had his head and neck braced and stretchered off. There are frequent stories of fractured necks after contact like that. Really surprised he was picked straight up.
This is absolutely the kind of thing that shows the NFL is only paying lip service to head injuries.
Cringed so hard when they were rolling him over. Literally the worst thing they could do.
Pretty sure if you watch again it looks like his helmet is coming off a bit. It looks worse that is is. But he for sure was knocked out briefly and his teammates trying to lift him up right after, I was like "nooo stop, let him be"
he actually is just completely limp right there and his neck is relaxed so it’s bending more than usual. his helmet is still completely intact. also wanted to add how stupid his teammates are for picking him up so quickly. without a doubt a concussion.
Watch it again and focus on his neck :/ his neck is definitely bending like beckham.
Your body is surprisingly bendy when you're unconscious
Yeah shoutout to everyone trying to stand him up while he’s looking like Woody from toy story while Andy’s in the room
As an EMT, I was legit yelling at my TV. Jesus Christ, maybe teach football players not to move motionless people who just suffered a severe trauma.
[deleted]
Nah dawg. That's acceptable if you're just hurting. After you're injured, you gotta chill the fuck out. You're dumb for saying that.
Body going limp is a hell of a thing. You know, after the brain injury.
Sick no call
But my quarterback spun a football at a guy and hurt his feelings - 15 yards
To be fair an Injury to the feelings can destroy a career
Works cited: Wentz, Carson
Damn, you just made a Giants fan feel bad for the eagles fans.
In fairness thats a textbook unsportsmanlike. Its the Zach Moss penalty later in the game where he dropped the ball in the direction of another player that was really outrageous
They should change the textbook. If you light a guy up then you’ve earned the right to teabag him.
Even if the refs missed it somehow this is the kind of penalty that you should be able to retroactively assess.
No call on Henry and Johnson opi too
Or that hit on agolar when he was a defenseless receiver or the late, out of bounds hit on mariota on the very next play. Fuck the refs with a sideways cactus.
Or Renfrow
Nah it's cool, the NFL will probably come out tomorrow and say that should've been a penalty and all will be forgiven
Also disappointed that the announcers made no mention of it after the commercial break other than saying "Renfrow was helped off the field"
Yeah wtf
Joe and Troy suck ass. Just two old fucks rambling on just to hear themselves talk.
Buck gets paid more than anyone on this reddit makes to say nothing besides trivia and "Pass is... Caught."
Or his standard "what a throw, what a catch" line, like my guy has no variation.
I have a new appreciation for Buck.
He's self aware that he is supposed to be milque toast.
Go find some of his interviews on Barstool or elsewhere where he can let his personality fly because he's a legit dude playing a character and he's legit kind of funny.
Aikman fucking sucks though, he should be replaced.
Romo and Buck would probably be a great pair because Buck would play off Romo well compared to Nantz just missing the jokes half the time.
Buck's in the hall of fame to just say that
Romo has spoiled us all and most other commentators are just terrible.

If I had Jeff Bezos money I'd probably pay fox tons of money to fire them and get someone like Bill Burr to commentate games. Wish there was an option to listen to the stadium feed and mute the commentators
If you have a surround sound set up, muting the center channel may cut out the announced and leave you with game sound on the other speakers
Remember Dennis Miller on monday night football? What could go wrong?
Joe is in the HoF too. What a joke lol.
People were defending him when it was announced too, like I get it I can’t talk shit as a raiders fan but talk about settling for mediocrity!
I've heard folks complaining about Aikman and thought none of it was warranted... until I sat thru yesterday's game. Holy hell do they suck. Constantly shitting on players, focusing on nonsensical shit, and just coming across as pompous douches... I had to mute it all
"he was staggering" and then not another god damn word about him!
How the hell do you say someone was staggering after a hit like that and not follow up?!
Thats a CTE inducing hit.
what do you want them to say exactly? "Hunter is now one step closer to CTE"
"Pretty rough hit there Troy"
"Yeah looked like helmet to helmet, you know back in my day those kinda hits were more common but there just isnt a place for that in todays game"
insert story about old cowboys here
Do commentators not usually comment when a play that should be a penalty goes uncalled, or when a player is injured?
Why was it a penalty exactly? He wasn't defenseless. He was a ball carrier and ducked his head into contact. So sick of all the crying for penalties. If a receiver runs across the middle and is hit in the head then yeah call a penalty because he has no way to protect himself. That's not the same as what happened to Hunter or on Herbert's hit.
It would be nice if they acknowledged someone almost dying instead of sticking to that “don’t draw attention to it” mentality they seem to have
In college that guy is gone from the game, NFL should adopt that rule.
Yep the targeting rule. Sometimes its wrong like any rule like that but I like the throw the flag then review to confirm and see if it's bad enough for an ejection. The NFL probably should have something for egregious hits like this
They essentially gave the Chargers the game by awarding a helmet to helmet for Herbert in the final moments and blatantly ignored this. The ghost of Al Davis is fucking Goodell's wife from the afterlife. It's the only explanation
Why was this not a penalty? That hit looked so hard
Al Davis pissed off the NFL and we still don’t get those calls
Hard hitting isn’t a penalty so that may not be the best metric to go off of, but it definitely looked like helmet to helmet. Should have been a flag
Helmet to helmet isn’t a penalty, but it definitely should have been a penalty for leading with the helmet.
You’re right. Wrong terminology. Should’ve been leading with the crown.
But he didn't lead with his helmet. if you watch the replay you can see him clearly turn to the side to lead with the shoulder, it's a sucks that it was helmet to helmet but there was no malicious activity like leading with the crown.
lmao like that overtime penalty right
It should have been. And an ejection. Not as bad as the Travethan one on Adams a couple years ago, but bad.
How the fuck is that not a flag?
Simple, the player hit was wearing the silver and black.
truest statement ever said
Hope he’s okay. He’s my favorite middle-aged accountant turned NFL WR in the league.
That's fucking horseshit dude
I don’t know how a flag didn’t get thrown here. He clearly lowered his head to initiate helmet to helmet contact to a player that was being wrapped up already. Completely unnecessary to come in that hard with your head down.
To add insult to injury, within 5 minutes before this the refs called a fucking double penalty on an incidental fasemask by a raiders cb
Accidentally a raiders DB raked a chargers WR facemask on a curls route where the wr had a sudden change of direction
Refs called a penalty ive never heard off: PI for the facemask, then added a personal foul on top of it for the same action for 30 something yards
Then looked at their damn shoes 5 minutes later when Renfrow got executed on this play
If you don't like that then you just don't like raider football
:(
Renfrow was already pretty much wrapped up there was literally zero reason to drop the helmet and headhunt him like that.
Zero reason? No bro he probably saved a yard! That's reason enough to break a guys neck i guess
Thats the issue with football in general... gotta preserve every inch like your life depends on it and you wind up with stuff like this.
People always mention rugby has no pads, but you don't have to stop someone dead in their tracts, if they fall forward its OK. Football? Not so much, first downs, etc depend on it.
Rugby not having pads also has the benefit of guys not wanting to lower their heads and ram it into another dudes head. That would hurt. Helmets cause more head to head hits than they save.
100% agree.
That was fucking brutal. Made me hate my favorite sport for a minute.
Abram would’ve gone to jail if he hit someone like that.
This is the shit that needs to stop. Dude's obviously going down with 4 defenders around him and you do that? Fuck you. What are you gonna save 1 yard with that?
these are athletes playing a lightning fast game full of emotion so it's hard to change that, also a lot of athletes are just not very smart no matter the sport
Bro. Fuck that mindset. Zero reason for what happened there.
Fair, if you believe the first point has nothing to do with it then see point 2, many athletes are just dumb and some are malicious
If that happened to me I think I’d call it a career
Sorry dirty ass son of a bitch. I really hope Renfrow is okay
Never heard of the guy before this game. Hope he’s a practice squad guy that gets sent back
This is so fucked up
Having this be a no-call lends so much credit to the "kids should not be allowed to play football" crowd
Fucking gross hit
And that is how someone gets killed on the football field
That is so fucking unnecessary. I can't stand those free shots guys take on someone who's already wrapped up. Jesus christ this is bad.
Renfrow was disrespected by getting no call.
The dude is genuinely a good guy.
Fuck the refs.
You can decapitate a punt returner but you can’t tap a QB on the head.
I apologize for this low effort comment
Don’t. It’s more effort than the league puts into these rule changes
Of course.
This wasn't called as a penalty last year lol
How is he not dead? For real
The helmet turned not his face, still, can’t feel good.
This comment is even more relevant after that overtime penalty.
Gave them the extra down for the winning score too.
I would say the penalty was less important than the 50 yard bomb they gave up to get them there.
I mean, I don’t disagree. The raiders should have scored from the 3 yard line if they wanted to win. But a ticky tacky penalty because it’s a qb running the ball when a much more violet hit went unflagged in the same game is bullshit.
You're allowed to hit the QB out of bounds as well, but only if they're wearing a Raiders jersey....
Unless your Baker Mayfield where the Ref said he was allowed to be in hit in the head because he was a runner (he actually said that to why there was no penalty live)
Depends on who the QB is. Herbert been getting a lot of contact this game.
Apparently not.
