My 9 month old is not crawling- tell me this is normal?!

3rd child- the last one was crawling at 5 months- this one only wants to walk (loves standing and trying to walk) but refuses to crawl- so is this normal- and not harmful? Now our aunt is telling us not crawling means other developmental problems in the future....

EDIT: so a big thank you all around- just needed to hear other stories on this...

The hardest thing to do is to not compare your kids, but it's crucial. Don't believe anyone but a doctor. If you've got a 6-month appointment coming up, ask then and go with whatever the doc says/suggest.

My non-medically-grounded opinion is to relax and let it happen. Don't panic, but keep caring!

ugh..dont go with whatever a doctor says. go with what makes sense after considering all your options.

educate yourself first. doctors are not gods. if you can read and can use google effectively you can diagnose and ask intelligent questions with real experts out there (not just someone that has a doctor title)

Very true - I was just going for the basic level of it. Because the internet will stab you in the back just as quick as a mal-informed doctor. I mean, if you google "my kid isn't crawling" you're bound to come up with a whole host of answers including normal "hang in there" answers and people saying "omg it's cancer" - and parents don't need that kind of scare. I'd say that for this decision, a doc will be able to ease the fear - and be able to look for physical things that could tip the parents off to a more serious issue just in case. I think in this situation, google might be scarier than a doc.

But I'm usually right with you on using the internet as a back-up/pre-appointment briefing!

Mine never did. She went from soldier low-crawl to walking.

I wouldn't worry.

So glad you posted this and how everyone responded! My (almost) 9 month old is doing the exact same thing.

WHEW!

Yep, no worries. My son didn't crawl until he was 11 mo, a few weeks before he started walking. I'm actually surprised he crawled at all. He generally wanted nothing to do with being on his stomach, and once he learned to cruise, that's all he wanted to do. He's now 3.5 years old and has no developmental problems that we're aware of.

If your child is wanting to walk before crawling, I really don't see a problem. They skipped a step.

Not a big deal at all, my daughter didn't crawl for very long and started later than some of her peers. She was walking a good bit earlier than them though...

She got around for a while by rolling, then scooting. She did those two much longer than she shouldn't. But she jumped right on up into walking not more than a few weeks after she finally decided to crawl.

Every kid is different, you can't compare any two. They will develop at their own rate, and sometimes they don't crawl not because they can't, but because they prefer another mode of mobility...

My first didn't walk till almost one year, my second was walking at nine months. ALL kids are different, until the doctor says there is something wrong, believe nothing from people who are not a professional.

Not all kids crawl, some just skip that step and start walking.

What your aunt might be referring to is recent analysis that shows that since the "Back is Best" campaign started in 1994 (which reduced SIDS incidence by 50%), a large number of babies have been skipping crawling, or crawling really late. This is because they spend less time on their stomach, so they have less opportunity to build the muscles required for crawling. This same analysis showed that when babies skip crawling they will typically have weaker upper body strength - but that is kind of to be expected.

The jury is out on whether or not their is any lasting implications from skipping this step, but you can encourage crawling by giving them time to strength those muscles with "tummy time". If you child is already moving around, it might mean that when you play with you kiddo, lay on your tummies together (face to face) and just encourage using the upper body (neck, arms, torso).

Babies can't crawl if they aren't ever on their stomachs, which seems to be the down fall of constantly keeping babies on their backs.

Mine avoided crawling due to (I believe) our hardwood floors. We moved to a carpeted place and he took off right away.

Our baby's doctor always told us that it should usually go sitting up - crawling - standing - walking, but that some babies skip one or several steps and it's perfectly normal. In our case she was telling us that because our baby was starting to crawl but, while he would stay in the sitting position if we put him in it, he wouldn't sit from lying down by himself.

8 month old twins here. One is army crawling, one isn't crawling at all. As long as your doctor isn't worried about development, I wouldn't be worried about it either.

If you listened to everyone's comments on the development of your child, you'd worry yourself insane.

Its fine, my 9 month old doesn't seem to want to crawl either :)

My 18 month old never crawled. Now he's walking like a champ.

Unless your kid is bleeding, it's normal.

Kancho_Ninja•

caveat: If your child is female and pubescent, monthly bleeding is normal.

True, but his kid is 9th months old.

Our daughter didn't start even trying to crawl until 7 months and didn't really master it until 11 months.

Today she's a normal, bubbly, walking/running/climbing 3 year old.

Don't sweat it. :-)

My kid is almost 9 months and I've been trying everything to motivate him to crawl. I put his toys just out of reach and when he realizes it he just rolls over and plays with his shirt or something.

He's actually gotten pretty good at rolling where he wants to go. He'll roll and realize that didn't work and readjust and roll again over and over till he gets it.

I've put him in a jumper and a little walk around toy and he jumps but hasn't moved the walking toy on his own yet. After reading some of these comments I wonder if he's gonna skip crawling and walk.

My kid started walking at nine months. She never crawled.

My son did not start walking until about 19 months. He is just fine. Running and climbing now.

My niece went from floor to running with barely a crawl at all. Our six month old son is showing the same tendency. He LOVES to stand and has loved it since he was three months, but you put him on his belly and he just flails.

I know a 15 mo old that only scootches. Every body is different. You are ok!
