Wife SUV: stepping stone from honda civic to CX-5
Hey everyone at /whatcareshouldIbuy My wife is currently driving a 2004 honda civic ex from my college days. I want to get her a really nice CX-5 in the future, but it's currently out of my price range. What SUV/hatchback (about 4-6k) would be a good stepping stone so she can get use to driving larger vehicles?

For that price, why? For that price a used car is going to be more of a headache than anything.
Just keep driving the old car and save up til you can afford a CX-5. They aren't even that expensive. There are plenty 4-7 year old CX-5's in my area going for $12-17k.
Its not like the CX-5 is a large vehicle. It really doesn't take any time to get used to, maybe a few minutes. They drive a lot more like cars than SUVs. There's no reason to drop thousands on a crappy old vehicle just to learn how to drive something a few inches taller than your old car (Civic is around 175" long, 68" wide, and 57" tall - CX5 is 180" long, 70-73" wide, and 64-65" tall)
I just don't want to drop 12k-17k on my wife who has only been driving for a year. I want to get her something newer but not drastically new. I realize now that they are the same wheel base, just taller.
Well again, thats just not possible with your budget. For $4-6k you're looking at something at least 15 years old or with 200k miles on it. Its going to cost you quite a bit more than what you pay for it just to keep it maintained.
If you really want her to get some practice, just rent one from hertz for a couple days for $50 and go somewhere rural for a couple days.
Yea, I should just wait one more year. Thanks for helping.
