Did politicians have to resign frequently in the past for making dumb comments?

So I'm mainly wondering if the modern phenomena of someone powerful saying something dumb and all of the newspapers/other powerful people/public jumping on board and forcing them to resign is a really modern phenomenon or has this been going on for a long time? Also if it did happen in the past a lot why does it feel like a relatively modern phenomena?
