I can't thank you enough for this post. I currently was using just ones I was able to upgrade but I used what was suggested and my fights are a whole lot better. Edit May 1: I’m retiring from the game as other real life priorities are calling. I’m going to leave this post up as hopefully it remains helpful for a while, but I won’t be updating it or able to answer comments. Hopefully another player or mod may make a new version at some point. Best of luck to all and enjoy the game!
These question comes up a lot, and while they’re a very common need for new (or not so new) players, there are no “best” capos or teams so the answers are always the same and the duplicate threads can crowd out other discussion. Given that we’re making two changes:
- This comment has the general advice on how to build a team, the same as you’d see pinned in the official discord. If you have clarifying questions on what this means you can ask here in the comments.
- We are creating a new rule not to post on which capos should I build / rate my team posts outside of this thread. If we see posts they’ll be deleted and pointed back here. We will still allow discussions of specific capos and strategy and how to use them, but it’s a new line we’re feeling out so may make tweaks.

Which capos should I build?
Most folks will pick 5-7 of the following:
- 1-2 single damage capos (Yuya best skin, Bella, Jose, Kate, Mitsu, Rosario, Yusu)
- Chiyo (debuff increase damage to target)
- Wheels (debuff reduce damage from target, plus street skill)
- Gianluca (grenade+single target, plus street skill)
- 1+ team buffer (Gigi, Izumi, Enzo, Eugenio)
- 0 or 1 multi damage capo (Consuelo best skin, Gogo, Kyo, Cesar)
- C+V (prevent death for 3 turns to nearby capos)
- 0 or 1 team healer (Ang, Kaito, Vince)
Team grenades (Dante, Pedro) are strong end game but weak before. Self buffers, single healers, and single grenades seem weak generally (Edna, Laura, Sandra, Shun). The Twins and Wesker also feel really niche, though when the twins skin comes it will be interesting to see.
It’s preference both for what mix of those and which capos you like (or the game gives you) in each. And if you want to build a different mix that’s fine too, it’s not set in stone and many teams can work.
Within those groups capos are mostly the same, though as skins come out they’re starting to differentiate. Right now I think Yuya’s and Consuelo’s skins are really excellent, all of the buffer skins are great, and Vince’s skin seems strong for a healer. And new skins coming all the time. So you can check those out as you pick preferences.
Beyond that what is really important is to make sure your top 3 are one of each type (bulb/tech, hat/business, gun/strength), and likely mix up nations across the team which will make upgrading easier.

Looking for advice here. Started playing recently. My main team right now is, kate, outlaw duo, chiyo, isumi and wheels. Is it ok? Can I improve it? I just unlocked gigi but is he better than isumi? Thanks!!

Both Izumi and Gigi are strong buffers (the strongest two in my view), so either are fine. The Duo are new so don’t have a great feel but the revive seems strong. So overall team is probably fine and goes with what is above.
Only swap I might consider is to switch out Kate for one or both of Bella and Yuya... Kate is solid so fine to stick with if you like her, I just think Bella slightly easier to control and Yuya is cigar fight champ with his skin.

I don't have yuya right now but I'll check her out once I get her. Forgive my question but what's the difference between kate and bella? They seem to have the same ability. Thanks for your advice really aprecciate it!!!

Kate and other Defiance capos hit the capo with the highest fight power, which isn’t something you can usually control. Bella hits the capo with the lowest HP which you can control more easily, for example by putting Chiyo against the capo you want Bella to hit so they take more damage first round. This can make it easier to control who you kill first against many teams.

How about Gogo, Chiyo, Angelina, C&V, Wheels?

That works fine and fits the guidelines.
I like Consuela slightly more than Gogo so if you didn’t have another reason to go Gogo you could consider that swap. Rationale is just that with their skins I think Cons’ stun helps more than Gogo’s heal decrease in the current meta. And with your other 4 that would also spread you a bit better with 2-bus 2-str 1-tech vs 1-bus 3-str 1-tech. But this is very minor so if you prefer Gogo or already have her built that’s fine.
Longer term or if you want to build a 6th I would consider either a buffer (Gigi or Izumi) or another damage capos (Yuya or Bella).

Every mode and even different opponents need different teams, but to progress folks usually need to pick a core set of 5-7 capos to use across the different modes. So the team-building advice isn’t mode specific.
With that said, for kingpins a strong team is typically Wheels, Chiyo, and a combo of buffers or strong single target attack skills.

Retooling based on the advice here (thank you JJ for the comprehensive post). Going for broad range of stuff since new to the game, figure I will expand a little later as I find more things out or get to a point where somewhat more specific solutions matter which looks to be months from now.
Wheels / Chiyo / Bella / Consuela / Izumi
Does this make sense for progression and some capability for fight modes and kingpin? Skins will be gotten in time.

Yeah, that’s not really following the guide at all... would have at most 1 multi-damage so keep Cons and drop Gogo and Cesar, would have at most 1 healer so drop one or both of them... think you should probably read it again and reconsider a fair bit

Thanks for the reply! I had read the guidelines but just wanted an opinion on my team and I see that it is not good at all and redoing it. Here's the lineup I am considering:-
Multi Damage - Can I keep Caesar(Italian/Str) instead of Consuelo here? Caesar's damage is a lot more and there's the support skill bonus too
Izumi(Japanese/Biz) - for her fight power and stun de-buff. Will work fantastically with Angelina's costume too if I use her
Stefano Steels(Italian/Tech) - I wanna add in this guy but worried about having too many Italians with Caesar and Vincent/Angelina. I really wanna get this guy too so open to dropping one of the other Italians
Yuya(Japanese/Str/Oni Skin) - His skin can be won in the next event and seems cool. Is it worth including him for it? The attack description is a bit confusing. What is the "random" part there?
Healer - I'd like to keep Vincent(Italian/Str) because of his costume but open to getting Angelina(Italian/Biz) instead too because worried of having too many Str types. Also open to dropping healer altogether because then I'd have too many Italians with Caesar and Stefano.
So final team can be -
Caesar(Italian/Str/Multi damage)
Izumi(Japanese/Biz/team buff)
Stefano Steels(Italian/Tech/de-buff/tech upgrade)
Yuya(Japanese/Str/multi damage)
Bella(Mexican/Tech/Single Damage) - not really too happy with this choice but I have to pick a Mexican and a Tech or Biz because I already have 2 Italians, 2 Japanese and 2 Str types and one more of those will really make that type hard to upgrade. Any suggestions?
Why is Consuelo a better choice than Caesar? Caesar has much more damage and the support de-buff even with Consuelo's skin. If she is, I can drop Caesar and add in Consuelo and Vincent for a team of Consuelo/Vincent/Yuya/Izumi and Stefano!

Yes, that’s a much better team either way you go.
Consuela’s skin has a two turn stun that is useful to stop grenades at the high end of arena or cigar fights since they don’t go off if stunned, but Cesar could be fine to use as well since he’s newer so folks haven’t used him as much and the meta is so buffer heavy right now.
I think Bella is fine too and I use her as well - she can pair well with Chiyo to get an insta-kill on anyone you choose in most fights.
Though that tees up you don’t have Chiyo too, who you’ll eventually want for kingpins and other fights. Could consider her as a 6th if you want, or build her later.

Here's the team I am thinking of going with
Vincent/Caesar - having a really tough time picking here but will probably go with Vincent because his skin looks OP

Is Gigi better than Izumi? Gigi pumps up three if he’s centered, only 2 if at a corner. But Izumi pumps everyone. I don’t have Izumi yet but would it be wise to replace Gigi with Izumi?

Both Gigi (edit: with his skin) and Izumi buff all teammates, so no difference there - you may be thinking of Enzo or Eugenio who buff only 3 toons max. I think Gigi and Izumi are both excellent and there’s not necessarily a “best” between them, it may depend on the situation.
Izumi is uniquely helpful in gang bosses, but surprisingly works even at low stars so maybe try her on your team even as she is instead of a higher damage capo and see if she improves things for you.

Are you sure Gigi buffs the entire team? Both Gigi and Izumi’s text are different. Izumi says “entire team” while Gigi says “self and surrounding” Also, when I play a battle and focus on Gigi, you can see that at the start of the battle, he actives his boost and only himself and the other two next to him get a boost.

Ahh, sorry, it’s an issue of with or without skin. With the skin it is all teammates, without its self and surrounding. Since everyone that uses him at upper levels has his skin I forgot that without it the skill was narrower. He is definitely top tier together with Izumi, but you’ll want his skin to get that benefit.

I've been playing for 6 days now and I'm kinda lost with who I should prioritise. My strategy is to build my legendary capos enough to allow them to auto my buildings.
I have Izumi, Gogo, Kate, Wheels, Consuelo (which is the current team I'm using) at level 120ish.
I also have Rosario, the Twins, Vincent, Caesar, Eugenio, Laura, Joseph, Angelina and José.
Should I be swapping any of the capos on my team for any of those outside?

Wait until you get all the capos... you will fairly quickly, so don’t want to get over-anchored to whoever drops first. Then pick a team you like using the guidelines above. Your current team is solid doesn’t follow those guidelines fully yet since for instance you are using both Cons and Gogo so 2 in that group, so would be better to swap for another like maybe Chiyo. There’s no “best” team though so you should be in a decent zone if you build with those guidelines.

Decent. I think Cons is better than Gogo given her skin. And folks are mixed on healers, so while I use Vince and like him, I think you’d benefit more from Chiyo or a buffer like Gigi/Izumi. You’ll also see in the guidelines that I think grenades like Dante are good end game but harder early/mid game so if you stick with him just be ready.

Right now end game is 3-RB 820, but in this context i meant late enough that grenades become effective. Grenades seem relatively weak early on, then get stronger as they scale - 3-blue is probably a reasonable place where he’s starting to be fairly effective. You’re in the zone where cigar fights really matter most since you’ll be level constrained instead of star constrained, so if he’s working for you there then that’s fine.
I use Dante, but built him after my core 5, so he was basically useless for me until he caught all the way up to them in the rainbow stars... so I never really got a feel for where he’d have become useful along the way if you built him as part of the first 5 core team.

Sorry, was just seeking advice on my team because I didn’t know if it was any good. I just jumped into this game and those 5 capos are the first ones I was able to rank up so it became my team by default. I’m just asking to see if I should switch and upgrade other capos

Please let me know if I should focus on other capos or is my team good? Steels 2 blue stars - miss world 2 blue stars - quarterback 1 blue star - muertos 1 blue star - shadow 1 blue star. The obvious issue is that 3 of them has pistol as icon so hard to level up. Any advice is much appreciated

Generally your team follows the guidelines so you’ll be okay. Where you are you might want to take a top of each type and let them get ahead of others as your power and progress in cigar fights will go up quicker this way. You have to use Wheels and Rosario as they’re the only of their type, and would make Eug your other one. Also, start buying cigars every day in the cigar shop and anytime you can in gang chat or debt collector as you’re about to be cigar-stuck more than star-stuck.
You can also use the exchange for Strength types to help with having 3. Save up capos for a bit before exchanging, then first use all your Strength epics and rares to exchange for a strength capo, then switch back to random exchange for the other epics and rares. Whenever you do this it should net you ~55% strength capos overall in the exchange (33% from the specific plus 33% * 66% from the random) which will help slot

Thanks for this post. Really appreciate it. I ended up going with Yuya (skin), chiyo (skin), wheels (skin), gigi and gogo who I am aiming to get their skins. That’s gonna be my 5. What you think?

That fits the guidelines and should be fine. You’ll eventually want skins for them all. Would make Yuya, Gigi, and Wheels your top 3 to upgrade first and eventually can let them get a bit ahead.

Thanks! My only concern is having too many Japanese, it may make upgrading them hard. What do you think about swapping Gogo for Consuela? I was reading about her skin and it looks pretty good. Plus she’s Mexican and not strength so I’ll have a variety of nations.

I agree Cons seems a bit stronger to me than Gogo, so good swap if it isn’t too hard. While three JP is a bit harder, if you save up a bit and then use the nation/type exchange first using all your JP rares and epics to get JP legendary, and then random exchange the rest, you’ll get 50%+ JP capos overall which should help a lot.

Current setup :
gigi, yusuke, ceasar, chiyo, C&V
This gives me 2ITA - 1MEX - 2JAP, and also 1BIZ- 3STR - 1TECH
Is the team good ? Is this setup enough to progress through stages ?
I was thinking on adding a 6th to complete, which would be MEX with BIZ (rosario) or TECH (sandra or Bella)

This team looks solid. Of the three you’re considering I like Bella best as she combos well with Chiyo for insta-kills (she naturally hits Chiyo’s target who will be lowest HP, and then usually kills it with the damage boost). You could also replace Yusu with her if you wanted to stick to 5 or build a different 6th.
Wheels is the only other one to consider with his skin - he’s solid in early/mid game fights, and very strong on streets and UB especially end game when it gets rough.

So in the main team, I have 3 FOR capos. Isn't it too difficult to upgrade them correctly in the late game?

I don’t think that’s a big issue now that nation/type exchanges are lossless. You can use the nation keys you get and you can exchange wisely to over-sample a nation or type.
For exchanges, if you save up a while then first exchange all your rares and epics of that nation/type for the nation/type you need and then exchange randomly for the rest you should be able to get up to ~55% of the nation/type you need (1/3 + 1/3*2/3). That balances fairly well with having 3 of 5 of the same type too.

You are telling me if I wait a bit and exchange "only italians" or "only tech" i has an effect on the given capo ? That's a game changer right there.

So I have Chiyo, Wheels, Consuelo, Kaito and Yuya. All of them with skin. But I don't have a buffer and I'm thinking about changing Kaito or Consuelo to Gigi or Enzo. What do you think about it? Or it not really necessary to have a buffer in this tier?

I think a buffer is a good idea and many folks have multiple in current meta, so adding one either as a 6th or to replace one of your current 5 is good. If you replaced one then I would replace Kaito as healers are a bit out of meta right now, or if you like healers a 6th is fine too. I think either Gigi or Izumi are good team-wide buffers right now.

Was hoping I could get some advice. I currently have Wheels/vince/chiyo/C+V/gigi. I feel like it lacks firepower so I was thinking about removing C+V. I already have vince and chiyo skins. Any help would be appreciated!

For damage I would probably do Yuya or one of Cons/Caesar, and would probably take out Vince before C+V. All with skins.

I started recently, I could use some help defining which 5 upgrade:
I'm using Chiyo, Yuya and Wheel, they are the ones that I have leveled up more. Any recommendations for the other 2 spots? Is it better to go for a healer: (Vince/Angela) or a buffer (Eugenio/ Gigi)? As the 5th option I had thought going for Bella cause I've pulled quite a few and she seems great. But unfortunately, her skills are the same than Wheels. Is it not a big problem or is it better I wait until I unlock Cons/Rosario?

Oh the ones you’ve listed in the choices above, I would do Gigi and Consuela, though you can make it work with others (though I probably wouldn’t do Rosario).
You don’t need to worry about the top three getting ahead into the mid/high red stars, but once you get there can let them get as ahead as you need. I actually maxed my top 3 before going beyond 4-red with Wheels and Chiyo, but these days the game gives many more free keys so that might not be required anymore.

Hi currently have Chiyo, Yusu, Kate, Gigi and wheels, Gogo as my 6th, was thinking of switching kate with a Mexican capo, thinking of either Bella or Rosario, which do you think is better? Also would consuelo be a better option to replace Kate? Thanks!

Both Bella and Cons are strong capos. Not a big fan of Ros as she doesn’t have any really unique qualities, she’s just like Yusu or Kate or any other defiance capos. Late game Cons has more use in cigar fights and against grenades so I would go with her over Kate for sure. I don’t know how high up you are yet, but you could also build Bella instead of Yusu if you wanted both.

Currently chiyo is 1 blue, the rest are 5 red. Currently at level 36 as I am really taking my time not to level up fast or am I doing it wrong? Is it better to have chiyo, wheels, gigi, cons and yusu? Im also thinking of c&v down the road. Thanks for the input!
