Realtek RTL8111H on Linux Mint 20.1

Purchase Advice

Is there support for the Realtek RTL8111H LAN chipset baked into the kernel on 20.1? I see some conflicting info in the forums so I was wonder what the consensus is in 2021. Looking to build a new machine so I am attempting to pick compatible hardware from the beginning.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the help, got the ASRock B550M-ITX/AC and the LAN chipset works fine.

It's supported by the r8169 driver.

sudo modprobe r8169

In other words yes, it's supported.

I used to use it with my ASRock B450m/ac before I moved to the X570 Taichi which has Intel I211 Gigabit and Intel Wifi 6. It worked perfectly fine the entire time I was using it.

The linked issue was with a quite old kernel version (4.15), a lot has been improved since then in the r8169 driver. Just make sure that the firmware for the respective chip versions is installed, it's included in the linux-firmware package.

Yeah thats part of the reason I started a new thread, a lot of the existing ones were for old versions. Thanks for the input!

I have a Realtek 8811 and I found out, that the Ubuntu-driver doesn't work. I use the Kali-linux driver for it. And works like a charm .....

So, maybe searching outside the Ubuntu-box might help.

This one works for me: realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms_5.6.4.2_git20200916-0kali1_all.deb

I have an MSI B450M Bazooka Max WiFi with the RTL8111H and it seems to vary between distros. On anything Debian based I need to install the proprietary R8168 driver. Works perfectly on OpenSUSE, doesn't work at all on Fedora, CentOS, or EndeavorOS. It's kind of a lottery, and quirky on windows as well; I keep wifi on as well unless I'm gaming typically

If you want a driverless wifi, get an Intel.

Wifi is not important to me, only the Wired Lan

Or Killer. (Though IIRC Killer uses Intel chips as their base)

Also, why TF does Realtek suck so much. It's not just on Linux either, it's a pile of shit on Windows too.

I think killer uses Broadcom
