Factory tours in the area

Things To Do

My son (4) has really got into 'how they're made' type videos over the past couple of days. Are there any age appropriate tours in the area I could look into? I think Shatto has one but that's all I've got off the top of my head.

Realistically we're not going to be going right away anyway and he'll no doubt be over it by the time we can go but just as something to have in my backpocket for the future.

Does that Half Moon Marble Factory still do tours? That one is specifically geared toward kids

I still have a tube of marbles from going on a tour there probably 20 years ago!

Great suggestion. My nieces and nephews loved that place when they were little.

Boulevard Brewery has good tour. Not sure if they are conducting those right now though.

They are not.

Hallmark used to have a cool tour where you made a bow at the end. Not sure if that’s even a thing anymore and may show my age with that one.

Yes, the Visitor Center! As an adult, I love the bow making machine. It’s so cool to see how it works!

I also recall a display of some sort showing how cards were printed or die-cut? I can’t remember. There was a human there and I had so many questions.

The employee Christmas trees were also fascinating and so creative.

Ford and GM used to offer tours of their plants here in KC. You may try to contact them and see if they still do it.

I'm not sure if they have a full on tour but you can watch cider being made at Louisburg Cider Mill. They also are featured in a How It's Made episode, so cool to see it in person and then watch the tv episode.

If your son wants to watch GIANT CNCs and robo saws/ water jets cutting stone countertops in Olathe, I’m the sales manager at Rocktops, and I’d love to take you guys on a little tour. We can do it at a safe distance and shut down moving material for a bit as I’m sure he doesn’t have steel toe boots. :) let me know!

Indigo Wild does factory tours during non COVID times

Maybe a longshot for how things are made but the suburban museum at the Overland Park Heritage Center has a lot on how neighborhoods formed here, plus they have GE's Electric House which is super cool.

There is a salsa company on south west boulevard near rainbow that does tours.

Not local but he might like the Hercules Candy channel on YouTube, though the crew does a fair bit of goofing off and chatting.. might be fun for him to see a treat made on the channel and then have a bag delivered.

It’s not a factory tour but if he’s into how things work he might enjoy Science City at Union Station! Tons of cool stuff for kids to explore lots of aspects of science. My kid loved it there.
