CRA address change before filing

I've been trying to change my address with my CRA account for months. Every time I select the option in my login, it says the page is down.

I've tried calling several times to change my address, however every time I call it tells me the queue is full and hangs up on me - I can't even attempt to wait on hold for multiple hours it just hangs up. I'm getting so frustrated. For what it's worth, my account was not identified as one of those which was compromised.

Do I really need to change my address before I can file? I'm still residing in the same province.

Edit: I got through! My advice to others having difficulty - don't follow the prompts to the personal information section in the menu (it's grouped with calls related to covid benefits). I selected the option for My Account help and got through after about 15 minutes and they were able to help me.

Call CRA's Collections number 1 (888) 863-8657, I literally got through to a representative immediately and changed my address! Loopholes FTW.

Thanks, this worked for me, took me less than 5 minutes.

rocketchick04•

Darn. I tried and was told I called collections so I'll need to call their general inquiry line instead :(

Flowintogrowth•

I'd say try to call this number again, it is collections, just go with it and tell them you need to change your address.

analogHedgeHog•

They told me this too, but I just pretended to have a collections inquiry by asking about my available balance and the agent was able to update my address at the same time haha. It just can't be the only thing you need from them.

Try the French "version" maybe? 1-888-863-8661

You will be able to select "English" after.

You can mail in the paper form the CRA has for this purpose (just google "CRA update address"; its the first result)

13

Mail the form! I have been trying to change my address for the past few months. Finally in January I mailed the form and got notified about a week ago it has been changed.

11
xisoncSaskatchewan•

Form RC325.

You can also fax it in using a free online fax service like faxzero.com

2
yeah_mike•

Are you sure they accept faxed forms? There's no fax number listed on the RC325 form

1
xisoncSaskatchewan•

Yes I updated my address this way last week. It took a few days but much quicker than mailing.

Go to https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/corporate/contact-information/tax-services-offices-tax-centres.html to find the "Mailing Address" of the nearest tax center.

For "What type of documents or correspondence do you want to send? " choose other.

It will display the fax number with the listing.

So for example, I live in Southern Sask, it gave me the mailing and fax number of the Winnipeg tax centre.

Me too!

Same here

I downloaded the form RC325, filled it in, and faxed it in. You can use a free online fax service like faxzero.com

Took a couple days but I when I tried calling the CRA they said their lines were too busy and to try again later.

Do I have to do this though? I don't even have a printer, and I'd really prefer not going to a copy centre if I don't have to during the middle of a pandemic. It just seems so ridiculous to me that the free of charge, physical distancing alternatives both seem to be broken

4
bluenose777•

If you can't print the change of address form you can just use pen and paper to write a letter that contains all of the same information.

It just seems so ridiculous to me that the free of charge, physical distancing alternatives both seem to be broken

The online option was disabled because of an increase in fraudulent activity, which was partially due to fraudsters cashing in on covid benefits.

Physical distancing has changed the working conditions of the call center employees just when demand has heated up because of covid benefits and the above mentioned fraudulent activity.

CRA is swamped with calls from people that have been locked out of their accounts. Call 5-10 times and you will get through eventually. Just be aware that they have absolutely terrible service and might drop you out of the queue anyway at any point.

sexy_balloon•

I did this yesterday. I called the 613 collect number instead of the 1800 toll free number, and didn't get hung up on and was able to talk to an agent after waiting about 10 min

Edit: the collect number is technically for people dialing in from outside of canada, and it won't connect if you dial it as is from within canada. However, I got it to work by adding in a +1 in front of it on my cellphone. I called from Toronto and it worked. Don't yet know if I'll be charged for it though

7
Two2naOP•

I tried calling the number and it seemingly took me to the same queue, with the same result. It did start by accepting my collect call too. Thanks for the suggestion though

3
sexy_balloon•

The options are the same but it's a different system I think. Did you actually get hang up on or did you hang up yourself after hearing the options? When I called the 1800 yesterday it wouldn't even let me get in queue, but the 613 number put me in queue. The options I had to click were the same for both

2
Two2naOP•

I saw it through to them telling me the agent queues were full and to try calling later - they hung up on me again lol

3
sexy_balloon•

Oh ok. That's weird

1

Laat time i made a post talking about that 3 h auto hangup it got deleted lol. Btw the site says wait time is estimated to be 12 minuets. Best time to call is at 1203-1206. thats when the first round of people get booted off the queue. If you're lucky you'll get your call answered around the 2 hour and 30 minuets mark right before you get booted off as well.

Took me a week od calling 4 times a day to get through. I also opted to give feed back after the call but that bot was broken.

Entire gov't literally turning a blind eye. Average wait time of 12 min prob includes the 3 minuets of queue is full messages .

5
RandomlyChosen55•

Yeah the phone system is absolute trash. Having to listen to that 5 minute recorded speech about terms and conditions each time only to be told the queue is full and to try again later is fucking aggravating.

I called on a holiday and was able to opt for a callback through their system and finally got my address updated. I'd recommend calling in on a holiday first thing in the morning or going with mail.

5
soaringupnow•

I filed my 2020 income taxes a few days ago. I moved across town last year so have a new address and had been unable to change it.

As soon as I submitted via Netfile I got an automated email from CRA saying that my address had been updated.

5
nicholt•

So you're saying you never changed your address through cra? Just had the new address on your tax return and then it automatically changed? If so that is very key info.

Thanks for bringing up the matter again, u/Two2na.

This has been the case for at least the last 2 months. I posted on reddit and received some suggestions on comments, though most of them were to call the CRA. Needless to say that the wait times are too long and I haven't been able to change mine.

https://www.reddit.com/r/askTO/comments/khqwr4/cra_website_address_change_options_if_the_link_is/

Hopefully, it gets fixed soon.

I called the 1800 number just after 8am EST this week and was only on hold for 35mis. It was the only time I could get into the queue.

Wait on the phone and have them do it. Took about 40 minutes for me.

2

Oof so I’ve also had this issue. I had to cal just to change my address. I was in hold for about an hour. It’s ridiculous that it’s been down for so long.

2
Legaldruglordd•

I was having an issue getting through but I had success with no wait time at around 9am CST. Edit to add: I’m referring to getting through to CRA, obviously

2

CRA website as well as their phone service is a joke..i tried calling for days and nothing..i really don't know how can this be so bad.

2

I called to change my address in January. The lady said that page has been down for months and they have no ETA when it will be fixed.

1

They took that part of the site down. I just completed this, 15-20 min hold.

Ugh same problem here.
