I’ll allow it! Beautiful and the root to a speedy edit:)

Fuck yes I love clean file structure. Don’t stop

God I love opening a project that looks like this.

the_philter•

This is beautiful.

re: Using "z" to push folders down to the bottom; wouldn't the words ("NESTED," "Other") by themselves plant that folder on the bottom, as the other folders are numbered?

10
Canon_Goes_BoomOPPremiere Pro•

You would be correct. I do this mostly out of habit and for consistent formatting since I also use this method in deeper folder levels where everything may not have a number attached to it.

the_philter•

Damn, your organization logic runs deep and I respect it.

Canon_Goes_BoomOPPremiere Pro•

Haha! Thank you - it comes from multiple iterations of trial and error

4
phirleh•

I love doing that on my avid, I would always have a z_junk folder that was always at the bottom

5
zeke_talbot•

It’s so satisfying to see others use the Z trick.

5
the_philter•

It's pretty clever and it save time hunting, that's for sure.

Though it's not as convenient with a traditional QWERTY keyboard, you can also use the kanji character for "the end" - 末 - to place something at the bottom (even further down than lowercase z).

末

Hah! That is next level z-status. Love it. Is there an easy way to type this on a qwerty?

3
the_philter•

If you're on a Mac (it looks like you may be according to the text rendering in your screenshot), you can use text replacement in System Preferences > Keyboard > Text. Add a new entry with a replacement phrase such as "z_" and then copy & paste the kanji 末.

You can add the Japanese keyboard as another input source in the same preferences, but then you'd have to switch between the two and that gets in the way of the convenience.

Alternatively you can type the omega symbol (Ω) with Option+Z. That's probably much easier to do in this scenario. It does come before 末 though, not that it'll matter.

brrrapper•

That sounds like it would make avid crash 10 times a day haha

UNMENINU•

I much prefer “Z” over “AAA.” AAA to me just looks like anarchy haha.

Once took over a project from a different post crew that was using !, !!, !!!, !!!! etc before folder names and it was immediately clear why they had been fired

Nice! I like using custom folder icons I've found through editors on Twitter. If I find the link, I'll share it.

HOW

2
Canon_Goes_BoomOPPremiere Pro•

Custom folder icons are pretty easy - plenty of tutorials out there :)

2
screamcheesee•

Do you use the Preview app method?

2
Canon_Goes_BoomOPPremiere Pro•

Yeah I think so. You essentially just need to copy-paste the icon in the info panel

I find it considerably more impressive to have consistent file organization than to have a clean timeline. I always find myself making my timeline pretty in the end, but no one goes back and fixes their mess of folders/assets.

Rubberbabybuggybum•

Are you a serial killer?

4
Canon_Goes_BoomOPPremiere Pro•

Not often. But I do partake in the occasional mini-wheats

Hot damn! This is explicit content.

Send me the PostHaste template!

3
masculin_feminin•

So good!

3
Randomae•

Beautiful. How do you name your timelines? I usually do “project name_ v 1”.

3
Canon_Goes_BoomOPPremiere Pro•

Depends how many editors are involved. If more than one we add our initials to the seq name.

Proj-code_Proj-Name_date_initials_version

Ex: 21300_Armani_21-02-26_CB_v01

If I saw this and was a hiring manager. Instantly hired. Because I assure you, you’d be the only one with ANY type of organization. Never mind such detailed organization.

Nice and easy to understand structure. Have you started using the Productions feature yet? It's been a minute since I last put everything in one project like this. Your 01-09 folders are now separate projects inside of a production.

2
FilmBadger•

Let’s hear more about this please. I haven’t come across anyone using productions a pro multiuser environment. What’s your experience been like?

2
NLE_Ninja85•

I've been using it since it was released as a solo editor. I cut multiple 30 second car dealer spots with similar manufacturers. From my experience, it has reduced project bloat and load times especially once I finally started using external SSDs (standard & NVME). I feel this feature overall has been the best feature they've introduced in 2020. I'm sure the transcription feature will top that sometime next week with the release of PPro 15.

I recently did a collab 36 minute corporate video project with a 2nd editor where I was in Chicago and he was in LA using PostLab Drive and Premiere Productions. I created 3 timeline projects, one for me to work in, one for him to work and one for us to merge our timelines in. The only times we ran into some issues was when he or I had project files opened with assets like music, mograph, VFX and such. We would text or Slack message letting the other know when we need access and lock the project so the other editor could get in. If we had a team projects account, things would've probably been a bit different.

Overall, I find in my experience that going back to a single project file for everything seems foreign because I've gotten use to Productions. I just need to figure out how to template a Production. Once I figure that out, I'll PostHaste and hopefully won't have to do much tinkering.

Canon_Goes_BoomOPPremiere Pro•

The Productions feature is interesting to say the least - I haven't had time to test it fully yet because I've just stuck with what I knew and understood. The benefits are enticing though - you've definitely motivated me to move its priority up on the list

FilmBadger•

Riiiiight, lack of templates. That jogs my memory as to why I didn’t implement it amongst my editors when it was announced.

But glad to know that you can get around the Team Projects licensing by using a cloud storage that looks like local storage.

I definitely think this is Premiere heading in the right direction. Especially when trying to get AVID editors into Premiere workflows and Premiere into workflows that AVID excels at. Great for advertising where assistants do cut downs or string outs or when doing multiple spots.

Thanks for the write up!

NLE_Ninja85•

No problem. PostLab tech support is fantastic. Also using the Frame.io extension for Premiere has been a godsend for tackling notes. You can import client comments as markers into your timeline or more.

Bnightwing•

I do this too for my graphics, audio and any other creative compositions, just copy paste the folder and bada Bing bada boom

2
Kapa51•

I don't need that, I don't even use the project panel, I just throw everything in a TL and work from there /s!

2
JDL4_•

You love to see it

elarobot•

I feel this level of folder / project organization in my bones.
