I see a lot of editors in the commercial world call themselves “film editors”. Why? It seems a little pretentious. If you cut one film but mostly work on ads you can call yourself a film editor? Also why do ad agencies refer to their spots as films? I never understood this. Even award shows like Cannes Lions use the term film for commercial submissions. What am I missing?

Hi all, I’ve been working in advertising for the last 6 years and I’ve come to the realization that I can’t stand the industry. I’ve cut broadcast spots, short form interviews, social (more and more) and everything in between. I have zero interest in ads in general and really don’t like the culture of agencies and the industry. The only pieces I’ve enjoyed cutting are interview/story based.
I’ve been in house at two large NYC agencies making good money but the work sucks and I find myself having to pretend to be interested in both the work and people I’m working with/for. Is this common? Am I too jaded already?
Anyway, I would love to work on documentaries, short form, and overall more na
I want to master the rotobrush but feel like the majority of tutorials on YouTube don’t explain the tool and features in detail. What tutorials do you recommend for a deep dive? Thanks.
I recently started to learn Avid and I’m confused on how it handles media. I have a few questions:
Is it true files can only be wrapped in .mxf? You can’t have ProRes .mov or H.264 .mp4? Seems like a huge waste of time to transcode all media if it’s not .mxf
Same with graphic still files too - I was told you cannot have .jpg, .png, or .psd files and they must be converted to .mxf - how would that even work?
Why is there one shared “Avid Media Files” folder where all footage (regardless of the project it’s used in) is kept? That seems horribly inefficient.
As a Premiere user for 6 years I am quite confused with the way Avid handles media. Any guidance would be appreciated!
Anyone know when it’s re-opening? They’ve been painting and putting up new signage
Hi, can anyone tell me what the benefits of conforming in Flame are? I’m only familiar with Flame being used for VFX work so I’m curious to hear what advantages and tools it has over your standard NLE. Thanks.
Hi all, I have an aerial drone shot of a city skyline. I need to track and composite text into the water. I can easily track the buildings and anything with a vertical orientation but I'm getting stuck on tracking the floor plane (water in this case). What's the best way to do this?
Thank you
I’m on a project where retouched still images are being supplied in the Adobe RGB (1998) color space. It’s too late to ask the retouchers to work in a different color space because the images have been already approved by creative team.
I am now using those images in AE to layer with animations. Upon import the images look different than viewing in Finder/Preview. Color and gamma are off. I tried different combinations of changing the Interpret settings per image as well as Display Color Management but nothing looks correct. I would like these videos to be in the Rec. 709 space so what workflow should I be using to get accurate color from the still images in my final renders (H.264) ? Is t
Hey all, currently on a project where I have many takes within a master clip. For example I have a clip A001C001 and within that are 10 takes I like so I subclip them all to a new bin and name them "Good Take", "Good until end" blah blah blah. Now what I can't seem to do is reveal the subclip's master source (A001C001). The only thing that is maintained is source timecode. If I want to find out which clip "Great Take 2" came from I have no way of knowing. I've read the Subclip section on Adobe's website but there seems to be no mention of this. As of right now my two methods are right clicking the sub
Hi, I created 3 Splines with the Spline Pen which I then placed in their own individual Sweeps to make some pipes/rails. I then grouped all of the Sweeps inside a Null and put that in a Boole along with a Cube. The goal is to have the 3 Sweeps intersected with the Cube so it looks like there are paths cut into it. Everything falls apart when the Boole comes into play. I attached some screenshots of what's going on + my scene tree. Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Hi, this seems like it should be a simple solution but it's driving me crazy. I typed a question mark (?) with the text tool and then right clicked Create > Shapes from Text. I now have the question mark as a Shape Layer, cool. Except the stroke path of the shape is around the perimeter as a loop where instead I want the path to be centered and NOT looped - just start to end. Is this easily doable? At the end of the day I want to be able to use Trim Paths to animate the Start/End of the path like the question mark is being drawn on. And yes I know, I could draw a new path or use an alpha matte but that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. Screenshot attached of the shape layer path. Thanks
Hey folks,
Does anyone know of post houses in NYC that use Premiere?
Thanks!
Hey folks, how's your week going so far?
I've always enjoyed reading the career advice shared in this community and today I think I could use some.
I'm currently an editor at a mid-size ad agency in NYC. I've been here for 4 years but lately I've been sensing a career move is in the near future. I am a 27 year old male if that matters.
I started here as an assistant editor right out of college with little to no experience. I quickly learned the ropes of editorial post-production and solidified myself as a reliable and capable editor. Our agency was doing great business wise which gave our department nonstop work. Fast forward a bit and I've been working remotely since March 2020. I've be
