defense rolls and critical success

Homebrew

so i am going to be using defense rolls as a variant rule for my next campaign and am trying to figure out a good player facing benefit to rolling a 20 on the check. initially i was thinking an AoO or free use of another reaction/bonus action but i'm thinking these may be a bit powerful. any one else have experience with using it? I ccould use a traditional crit fumble chart for what happens to the baddies but would rather keep the whole thing player-facing and keep fewer rolls to speed up combat.

I would create a table of simple options like

  1. You may up to 10 ft. without provoking opportunity attacks
  2. You may expend a hit die and immediately regain the HP rolled.
  3. You may attempt to shove an enemy within 5 ft. of you.
  4. You may roll your next attack with advantage
  5. You may add additional damage to the damage of your next attack equal to your proficiency bonus plus half your level rounded down.
  6. You may attempt to disarm your attacker as long as you can seem them and they are within 5 ft. Of you with a contested Athletics vs. the creature's Athletics or Acrobatics check (defender may choose)
  7. You may increase your AC by 1 until the end of your next turn.

I would say...

- Assuming the opponent didn't roll a Nat 20 on their attack, then the defense automatically succeeds. If both parties rolled 20s, then you ignore the critical aspect, and just resolve the attack normally (whoever rolled better, including mods, wins)

- Defender can use their reaction to make an riposte Opportunity attack against the attacker who failed.
