Are there any entry-level positions that are more geared towards the technical side of things?

I have been out of work since the start of the pandemic and decided late last year to transition into the IT world. Previous work experience was 10+ years in retail and 2.5 years as a 911 communications officer. With that background, I am not sure how valuable the experience of working in a call center style helpdesk role would be and would like something a little more on the technical side of things to start building my experience there. Is there anything specifically I should be keeping an eye on? Currently have ITF+ and working of A+ (1001).

Yeah, internships for DevOps, sre, network engineer, security engineer, cloud engineer, administration, infrastructure, etc. You most likely need to be enrolled for a technical bachelors degree.

You’re right, helpdesk is an easy but not decent starting point. But that’s usually where people with basic Comptia certs start.

Enterprise Help Desk was very technical. The amount of PKI issues with browsers, emails, and logins was fixed by being technically savvy. Sure, you could escalate your ticket, but if you have admin credentials.. fix it.

Most people on help desk escalate to a tier II tech because it is to technical. I thought it was fun.

Plus, there is no limit on how technical you can get if you write powershell scripts to remotely repair cx's machine. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

If everyone had a choice, nobody would be starting at help desk. But since they don't, they have to "prove themselves" there and get some experience under their belt. That's because roles above support isn't really likely to give someone with no relevant experience whatsoever a shot, unless you were going for an internship. And for internships, you have to be in school.
