Starbucks just updated the SCAP benefit, it's no longer a reimbursement plan but instead will be a 100% coverage for tuition/fees benefit.

From the email sent to SCAP scholars today:

Starbucks and Arizona State University are committed to providing the opportunity for every partner to achieve their dream of earning a bachelor’s degree. To further remove barriers of SCAP participation, we are excited to announce that both tuition and all fees will now be covered upfront for SCAP scholars!

Beginning with summer 2021, the Starbucks Tuition Benefit will be applied to your ASU account by the start of the session. Scholars will no longer have to pay out of pocket upfront and wait until the end of the semester for reimbursement of tuition. This benefit enhancement is because of continued feedback from Starbucks partners — you!

#How it works:

Please see the full SCAP FAQs now available on your My ASU account. We have compiled basic FAQs below:

#What do I need to know?

  1. The Starbucks Tuition Benefit will be applied directly to your ASU account by the beginning of each session to cover tuition and fees
  2. You must be benefits eligible and have a complete financial aid file by the start of the session in which you are taking courses
  3. Total tuition coverage above $5,250 in a calendar year will continue to be reported as taxable income and may impact your paycheck

#How does the upfront tuition payment work?

ASU applies an automatic CAP Scholarship at the beginning of the session towards your enrolled classes. After the CAP Scholarship and any need-based grants are applied, the remaining tuition and fees are covered by the Starbucks Tuition Benefit applied directly to your ASU account. Other educational expenses, such as textbooks and laptops, are not covered.

#Will I still receive my spring semester reimbursement?

Yes, reimbursements will proceed like normal for the spring 2021 semester.

I have an interview at Starbucks soon and I feel like this new change is a sign. If I get hired ( hopefully ) I want to take advantage of it! If I start work within the next few weeks am I eligible to apply for ASU for the Fall Semester?

You would need to work 240hrs from April-June. You can select benefits in July and you’ll have benefits starting August 1st. So yes, if you were hired before April starts, you could start Fall session A.

Thank you for this information! Hopefully I get the position!

Mention in the interview that you're interested in the CAP program. Store managers like that because it means you're serious about the job and are less likely to quit after a few months.

I’m on track to graduate at the end of summer B this year. My plan has been to wait to get reimbursed, then get a new job (already networking for that lol).

However, with this change, the way I’ve read it, once the tuition is paid at the beginning of summer A (since they pay A and B at the same time), I don’t have to wait until the end of the term to leave Starbucks because it would’ve already been paid. Does this line up with how you are perceiving this?

You are correct!

If I leave Starbucks midway through an ASU semester, can I still use the benefit. You will not have to repay the CAP Scholarship or Starbucks Tuition Benefit for any courses you are registered for in the current semester at time of separation, but you will no longer receive it for future classes.

If I leave Starbucks before I graduate, will I have to pay anything back?.
If you leave employment with Starbucks prior to graduation, you will no longer receive a CAP Scholarship or Starbucks Tuition Benefit. You will not be required to reimburse ASU or Starbucks for any CAP Scholarship or Starbucks Tuition Benefit you received prior to separation from employment. If you are rehired at Starbucks and become eligible for the program again, you will begin receiving the CAP Scholarship and Starbucks Tuition Benefit. Any credits taken while not employed at Starbucks will not be covered under the benefit.

So I’m confused. Here I am thinking okay, 42% covered and sent into my paycheck, but I can furlough payment until after I complete degree, thus having a temporary liquid money surplus. Plus the subsidized/unsubsidized loan covering 58% would automatically cover that amount that remained for tuition...am I correct so far?

Now, SCAP is covering 100% tuition so hypothetically, I won’t ever be seeing the temporary surplus in my bank account that would be deposited via direct deposit for the 42%. Instead, all that money for tuition is immediately assessed and allocated to my tuition cost.

Pending that I’m right, will I be murdered in taxes from the remainder if I exceed $5250? I don’t really file my own taxes right now and need to know, I’m going to call Financial Aid to discuss this tomorrow but if someone could lend some insight i’d greatly appreciate it.

Scap is still covering 42% tuition scholarship and any costs not covered by financial aid will also be paid directly by scap into your asu account. This still counts as a reimbursement. You won’t see any reimbursement in your paycheck.

Whether or not you exceed $5,250 in reimbursement will depend on how many credits you take and how much in grants you get to lower the cost of tuition after the 42% scap scholarship. My tuition after the scap scholarship and grants is usually about $1,200 a semester.

Few questions for you. Semester as in 2 sessions worth? I’m doing 2 classes per session, 4 a semester on track to graduate (if all goes well) by Summer ‘22.

I was approved for the Pell grant & by FAFSA. Gosh I should really get literate here.

The email and announcement said they are officially covering “100%” of upfront tuition costs though effective May 17th, isn’t that different from 42%?

Essentially they’re paying out of pocket for the portion you owe after SCAP grant (42%) and any aid/scholarships.

So let’s say you owe $2000 for a semester. Starbucks is now covering that and now your $5250 tax free has $2250 left to be tax free.

Let’s say that you would have owed $2000 for spring, summer, and fall. That’s $6000 that Starbucks covered for you. $5250 was tax free and now the $750 over is going to be taxed as income on your paycheck.

If you open up the FAQ, it goes over this a bit.

Would it then make more sense to deny federal student aid and loans and for the future accept their new policy in place? Technically I’m not bound by mandate to use loans if they are now being covered- right?

Yeah, I read the PDF but I’m still a bit confused.

THIS IS AWESOME. Too bad I'm graduating (Hopefully) in July. I hope you all enjoy this burden being off your shoulders. Starting is the hardest part and giving you some money to help offset books and possibly lowering your work time to be a student.

Let’s say I’m part time 20hrs a week and I ask for a week off would I still be eligible?

Lmao I did the SCAP program last fall semester and now ASU there trying to say I owe $2,633 even though I’ve already paid them back with my reimbursement. What a fucking SCAM!!
