Unrealistic Expectations of Fate

I’m not sure I believe in soulmates or twin flames.

But you best believe I will flirt with the idea to my grave.

I will pretend every girl I dance with in the rain is the one the stars aligned me to be with.

I will look for flaws to debunk the possibility that you could be the one I am meant to be with.

I will allow moments to feel like eternity before I reset.

Maybe I don’t believe in soul mates, but I think I believe in soul moments.

So I thank you for this moment, forever.

Thank you! I think that's such a beautiful part of art, is that it can show that no one is truly alone in their thoughts and feelings.

Welp I didnt want to cry at my desk today, but here I am

Wow, on one hand I feel bad for making you cry, but the fact that my words can have such a visceral response, does bring a sense of joy to me. Thank you for your comment.

I have a lot of weird ties to fate and relationships and how things work out. My ex turned out to be the cute girl from a store I used to shop at years before, who also worked at a different store right next to my first job, then worked at my job, and when I bought a house it turned out she lived around the corner. I used to joke I was stalking her lol

BugsyOPOP•

I feel you 100 percent. I had a similar experience with one of my exes. It always became a turning point in my view changing from believing in fate to summing things up to coincidences.

Fate is what you make of it in the end

This gives me the impression that the narrator is afraid to believe in soul mates but secretly does. I think we all feel like this. We want to believe that we can find someone who will make us happy all our lives, but maybe the narrator is correct. All we have are soul moments. After all what is life but a moment in a serious of eternal moments.

I think it's also about a fear of commitment, but also appreciation for each person for the moment he gets to have with them

3
BugsyOPOP•

Yeah I for sure had that in mind, I have found it is a sort of an idea that I romanticized, but deep down prefer to pretend I don't believe in as it makes people leaving whether in a toxic way or in a "for the best" kind of way.

You’re title “Unrealistic Expectations of Fate” makes me think of how relationships are unrealistic. Especially long term relationships. And when it comes to marriage, you’re put into a contract that’s the most unrealistic contract of creation. Like sickness and health. It’s very easy and very cruel to leave a spouse because the spouse is sick or dying or don’t look good no more.

You sure do like to use “with” a lot. In the third stanza where you describe every girl to dance with, I’d say “Every girl I danced in the rain”. I feel it’s more to the point and eliminate at least one extra “with”. Since “with” isn’t in the title, maybe go easy on that word. I feel every word in a poem shouldn’t stray to far from the title. The title sets the stage for the body of work, in my opinion.

I do like the sixth stanza where you compare soul mates and soul moments. If we had more soul moments and less soul mates, wow! As said above, way too many loops for one individual who may or may not leave you. Why do we go through years of hard work that may not ever be rewarded?

Great job!

Beautiful passion, but you should really be asking for more from a partner.

2
BugsyOPOP•

Interesting that asking more from a partner is that take away from this, as that was never really something in mind when I was writing this. What made you say this?

I mean, I'm sorry to hear that, but I don't see the connection to my piece. My apologies I am just a little confused.

Bad decisions are following your passion. True love is looking for $ in a bank account

I like how you’ve separated yourself from the idea of fate, but you still own that you are playing into what it is. Nice work.

Succinct but powerful. I think it's a topic all of us can relate to, the constant search, the unceasing journey, but the way you put this idea of finally finding "the one" (through the anaphora of "I will" - that sense of determination; Yet this is contrasted by the adverb indicating uncertainty "maybe") is especially meaningful to me. Good work!

It’s interesting and could be even more interesting! I’d try to explore different “perspective” or like a dilemma within oneself.. keep first 2 stanzas and go for more depth. It’s a great subject

2
BugsyOPOP•

Keeping the piece sort of vague was sort of intentional. I wanted to keep it simple.

Slippa0109•

nothing wrong with simple and powerful but vague is the word I struggle with.. it’s a good piece anyway

Strong show of captivebead, captivity. The longing remorse of a mind to enchant every moment as a wonder is sad in honest practicality, but rose, commonling in normal anxiety. The emotions are steep, on ridge lies the wanderment of being young and on the other the fantastic disappoin that clatters in most makeshift reality. The moment stands still as a war between wagers of indefiance.

edit: Captivity is abound with the self, but one can't stop pulling at the edges of unreality.

It was a great read, thank you for sharing it! Despite it being sceptical, the message is really uplifting and nice. You delivered it clearly and in an unique way. I also dig your choice of words, they paint a pleasent picture of your soul

1
BugsyOPOP•

I appreciate your kind words. I definitely try to write from my soul, each piece I make is a part of me, so all combined can be sort of a mosaic of who I am, not to be too corny or anything :P

You must have an interesting imagination. I think I'll check out your other poems as well

I can feel you saying goodbye but holding on so tight, hoping that you can find something like this again. It’s beautiful to think about how fleeting these moments are but also how many it takes to build a full fledged relationship.

1
BugsyOPOP•

Yeah I really had this growing moment of like, wanting to hold onto special moments and special people but in order for both people to grow, sometimes you have to let go of the moment.

2
butmakeitpurple•

Perfectly said, “if they come back they were always yours” or however it goes

Don’t you just love the internal struggle of it. Can someone really be your soul mate? I do think souls can intertwine. I’ve felt that before. Your poem puts some weight on my heart.

But I do like the positive. Make the next girl your soul-mate in the rain. If you really love someone, aren’t they already your soulmate to begin with?

1
BugsyOPOP•

Yeah totally, like soulmate is a term that holds a lot of weight, but I think it comes in many forms. Like, maybe soulmates can act as a momentary thing, like someone was a soulmate for this time in my life, to help each other grow, and then depart.

I love this piece. What I get from this poem is that you’re saying that if we spend our lives looking for the perfect person, then we will always be disappointed by the flaws we find within them; but even as we entertain the idea of soulmates and twin flames we can appreciate the small moments our love interests are there and we can say that each and every one has touched our lives in one way or another without being the one. It’s a very optimistic approach on just rolling with love instead of searching for the perfect one over and over again until you find the right one.

1
BugsyOPOP•

Yeah totally. The line about looking for flaws was also reflective of my commitment issues, so I like, am afraid to commit to someone because I fear they won't be the one. If that makes sense at all.

1

Oh 100%, and I think that line is reflective of how in most modern day romances we have it ingrained in us that a “soul mate” must match be flawless, perfect in every way to you and love be damned if they aren’t. We’re more caught up in finding the “perfect person” than focusing on what we create because we’re so scared of what we’ll feel when we feel like they’re no longer the one for us

Hi Bugsy --

Great work!! I love this line: "Maybe I don’t believe in soul mates, but I think I believe in soul moments." Sounds like the story of my life. I have written a poem about "Fate" with a different spin........whereby it holds all the cards and you cannot have things the way that you necessarily want them. Fate makes that decision for you.

1
BugsyOPOP•

Hmm That for sure sounds like an interesting spin on it. I tend to prefer to not think about life with like, the idea that everything is pre-determined, cause thats scary but like, maybe in some senses it's not.

1
[deleted]•

oh my God. why does it feel like an open love letter? 🥺 you are so in Love. This poem best fits the originality of meeting others and falling in Love. Having no idea about the future is the best way we fit in... Uncertainty is so loved.

1
BugsyOPOP•

An open love letter is a great way to describe this. Thanks for your comment.
