The Oldest Home in Hamilton County
The oldest house in Hamilton County
sits in the federalist style
among rolling hills
that must one day have been a sugary delight to the eye.
Two centuries later, the forest is gone
an interstate runs by like a cough
and the home is flanked by Navient's corporate headquarters
and an iconic blue box store full of put-it-together-yourself furniture.
If I had clout
and enough capital,
I would carefully pick up the historic residence
and crane it 200 feet to the northeast.
That would place it on top of IKEA's flat roof
at an interesting angle,
an Erwin Wurm sculpture
for an I-69 audience.

i like the narrative of the poem, i guess you are touching on how things that are old and beautiful (like the house) do not have a place or are not valued in modern society? the way you would crane the house on top of an Ikea roof like a sculpture makes me think the narrator wants to make a political statement of sorts about consumer culture. I think your poem's extremely well written concerning unique word choice, "sugary delight to the eye" is pleasing to me. "an interstate runs by like a cough" is an interesting simile because it conveys an idea that modernism is a kind of illness (not sure if that's what you were going for). and the attention to detail with the "put-it-together-yourself furniture" is great. I'm not sure if I have picked up on your intended meaning but I enjoyed your poem.
There isn't an intended meaning, per se. Just a question posed. Thank you for talking a walk around my sprawling old farm house! IKEA has great meatballs and free coffee.
