How much prep needed to start Mythic+?

Question

I'm playing a prot warrior at about Ilvl 187, and am at a point where I feel I should start doing Mythic+. I've heard lots about how ballbusting 15 and up can be, but what kinda of difficulty should I be expecting just starting out? Are +2's something I need to practice for, or can I pretty much just look up what thw affixes do an figured it out as I climb? I worry I'm overthinking this but I also would hate to be one of those "clueless tanks"

Low keys are still very forgiving. But atleast look up how the bosses work.

At the start of shadowlands i watched some dungeon guides that explained the boss fights + notable trash packs. I believe the channel was called "ready check pull"

I'll check that out, thank you

Mythic Traps is such a good site to learn for both dungeons and raid.

Ooooo thank you! I've been trying to find good resources for starting to tank Nathria as well.

You need to learn the mechanics first, they are more punishing than heroic. Even running a few m0s to get the feel for a dungeon may be best if you’re not feeling confident.

Is m0 a thing? Does it basically have the mythic mechanics without affixes or something?

2
lucio-oh-oh-•

Yeah you just start the mythic without putting a keystone in, you could just watch videos on the mechanics if you are feeling confident though!

Ooooo sick. I'll definitely give those a run to see how it feels at least. Thank you!

The only downside to m0 is you can only run each dungeon once a week and receive loot. The jump to +2 only has the fort/Tyrannical affix and isn't that big of a jump once you've done your 0s

No worries! I would say at this point you may end up grouped with someone with quite a high Ilvl, so you may not get the full mythic experience on the lower keys.

No affixes, no trash counter, and no timer. There's also loot off each boss instead of just at the end, so more loot. Drops 184.

Correct

Since you're gonna be joining as a tank, the dungeon route is something that will be up to you. I suggest downloading the mythic dungeon tools addon and searching online for premade routes (Dratnos routes are usually pretty good). You can import these routes so you can access them in-game, but you should probably roughly memorise them.

Other than that you might wanna run the dungeon on a low difficulty to get to know it a bit better. If you've never done mythics before I would suggest testing out a few m0s before moving on to keystones (the first m0 you do will award you your own keystone for the week, too!).

You should also look up each week's affixes online, and if you progress to +10s or higher spend some time looking into prideful (the seasonal affix) as well.

I did ksm as a ranged dps and am now pushing up a brewmaster tank. I think that seeing how other tanks handle routes, packs, etc has helped me improve a lot, so doing a key or two as a dps and watching the tank could be a useful thing once you finish the m0s you mentioned in another comment!

If you want to watch videos to learn a Donjon, check darkmech videos it's very clear and helped me a lot

1250 io tank here , my piece of advice , is to first learn routes . Install MDT , play around with it , then (most important) adapt it to your class/spec. Then go in and die (lots of times) . As a tank learning strategy in lower keys / M0 is key . After that is just about details, the mechanics are 80% from heroic anyway . The higher you go , more the details become important . ;) And HAVE FUN. PS: With Ilvl 171 i timed a +5 so you are super fine .

If you play alliance I’d be glad to help you in game and teach you some stuff.

I appreciate the offer but I'm Horde atm.

Dang! Well you can do m0 no problem. Learn the mechanics and move up at your pace. You play tank. You’re heavily heavily sought after.

Dont worry about your ilvl i timed +17 with 207 ilvl tank. You should watch guides and learn the routes. Rest is about practice

When you are done with all dungeons in m0 there isn't gonna be a big step up in low mythics outside of actually planning to get enough % for the dungeon to finish. This week is probably the worst to start as a tank but if you get a guild group you can probably push your key to about +10 in that gear level if trash dies before necrotic kills you

De other side got plenty pulls that would be considered as normal in other weeks but I got to about 90 stacks neurotic (180% healing reduction) within just a couple seconds so if you are not comfortable and know that your healthbar will survive the end of a pull without healing just go smaller. Low keys are extremely forgiving on pull size and not messing up will be all that counts even when you go 1 group at a time

At 187 u should really start it building up from 0. Im a pvp dude but at starting with irl friends we cleared the most dungeons with confidence, around +3+4,and we all were like same ilvl. I was the high est with 190 full pvp geared. So I think u can start. Avoid some Hard ones on Hard affixies but thats all.

All m0s to know at least the basics. Watch some guides preferably and be prepared to not get into groups past +10 since prot warr is ass compared to anything else basically

Wayte13OP•

Eh, I'll deal with kids emulating 20+ meta at a level where it isn't pertinent wheb I get there. m0's are def what I'll look into, I had assumed in the queu those were just a cutesy way to say "heroic" or something lol.

2
GrBDD:horde::druid: •

Yea, it's kinda bummer how everyone is so bent on just focusing what classes they see in the mythic+ pro tournaments and require 230ilvl basically for +15s.

1
PerkyAVSP•

This just isn't true. NF Prot Warr is huge and as a Resto Druid pushing 19s ATM, one of the better tanks to heal.

2
GrBDD:horde::druid: •

Well that's news for me. I haven't seen a single warr tank in months. Im also resto druid. But currently trying to get all +15s but even at ilvl 221 it seems people only want shaman or hpally

Wayte13OP•

I was leveling a pally but it looks like maybe Prot Warrior with the new Maldraxxus cov ability might be able to get some traction. If it remains absolute bottom of the barrel I'll just make him a Pvp/DPS char and do a Druid like I've been wanting to for months now

1
GrBDD:horde::druid: •

Id say play what you feel comfortable with. Blizzards balance with tanks is just all out of whack atm. Prot warr does nice dmg but can't take magic dmg for squat.. And magic dmg is abundant in dungeons

GrBDD:horde::druid: •

Pally as prot /holy is nice
