Six out of ten people in American prisons have never been convicted of a crime.
But hey, land of the free, baby!
Where did you get this number from? I just want to know.
"Nationwide, more than 60 percent of jail inmates are jailed pretrial"
Comment "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" on a video of 9/11 and get ready for Americnerd tears.
Noooooooooooooooooooooo I think it's perfectly okay for us to invade, bomb and otherwise terrorize entire countries and if they hit us back that's mean and unfair you can't do that only we are allowed to terrorize >:C

Hey my post! It confirmed all my suspicions that that sub is a reactionary shit hole, much like America at large.
Scratch a liberal...
What's especially shitty about it is even if, and that's a big fuckin'
you wanted to argue convicts deserve to be treated like chattel as a punishment, this shit happens extensively to people in jail simply because they can't post bail, and whom could very well be innocent. Or as far as of any crime actually deserving of incarceration, most likely are. So yeah, literally slave labor just for being too poor.
I have allways found the concept of bail to be a ridiculous concept. Like why the fuck can you pay your way to freedom when under investigation??
In my mind the question isn't so much why can you pay your way to freedom before trial. Its why is your freedom even a question? If you're innocent until proven guilty, why can you be locked up before a guilty verdict.
Because some people should be held in custody before trial if they are a danger to people.
Agreed, but that shouldn't be the default for everyone.
The actual reason is because it is profitable to keep people in a cycle of debt and imprisonment. Nothing about our criminal legal system has ever been based on the pragmatism you are expressing here.
And those people should be able to pay money to get out of custody?
It is ridiculous. Illinois has recently chosen to abolish the paid bail system because of this.
The intention is that it is scaled to economic circumstances, but that doesn't work. A man who has obe million dollars in liquid cash can probably front up with $800,000 whereas a man with 1000 dollars might not be able to spare 800 if he has bills coming up. It's a simplistic explanation, but it goes some distance to explaining why even if the amounts are scaled, it is still prejudiced against the poor.
And this is why most crimes are only illegal for the poor
In theory bail is not paying to be free, it's supposed to be a deposit of something of value to make sure that you don't flee before the trial.
In practice, in th emodern most people already are tied to things like their home, family or job making it very unlikely that they might flee, so bail should be reserved for people with nothing to root them in the community, or who might have the means to flee with all their ressources if they wanted (like an ultra rich person able to move his wealth elsewhere and at worst abandonning an empty home that would be a small fraction of his wealth), but in practice it's not used like that so removing the bail system might even be an improvement.
Wait there are jails, not prisons but jails, that have forced labor? Where?
