This is 1200+ word tutorial discussion on installing and setting up i3wm ; it includes dotfiles and examples.

I didn't understand the decision to use sxhkd when i3's config will allow you to set bindings and exec.

EDIT: 1 Word.

I think he’s saying that it lets him use the same keybindings easily while in other WMs.

in which case not a bad idea.

With Linux we like to use tiny tools that do only a tiny thing but do it really well - applications with that property are often interchangeable which allows us to customize our systems. Compare with i.e. MS windows which is a more or less monolithic system that you can't compose easily and most customizations rely on the developers intentionally putting a config option for you to change.

I use sxhkd to maintain common keybindings across all my desktops. Right now I run both i3wm & dwm (before I ran xfce4, bspwm, hlwm) all using the identical sxhkd configuration and keybindings. It is much easier managing a complex environment using sxhkd. (For me anyway).

btw. that is the same reason I use a common .xprofile (to share x functions across multiple desktops and manage them from a single config.)

sxhkd with i3wm never thought about it. Tho never even knew how to use sxhkd to begin with. But tempting for easing up of trying other tilings.

If you look inside the dotfiles in the article/ tutorial you will find the call to sxhkd from the i3wm config file. You will see the keybindingsI use in the sxhkd conf file. Once you look at those, I think you'll see it is not really very complex.

Aesthetically pleasing?

More like, aesthetically absent. (Which is a good thing, after all.)

I always had problem with conky, that when I do

bindsym $mod+Shift+r restart

The conky practically reapplies on the top of the earlier one. So it becomes brighter as its stacked.

It probably is stacked. I always set my autostart function with: ' pkill conky

conky -c <whatever> & '

That way restarts don't double things up accidentally. I find that pkill helps for many other functions as well.

You don't need feh if you already have nitrogen. The --restore option restores the wallpaper at startup.

I use feh to get a random wallpaper on startup. But you are correct, if you want to return to your last wallpaper nitrogen --restore ought to make that happen. For those who want to make more complete (full) use of nitrogen, there are numerous options.

Nope... the title applies to what I built (and you can build) not where the i3wm build started. Edit: although the start points for tilers like dwm and hlwm are tougher for folks to handle than i3wm. And for the truly disinterested builders there are some pretty nice i3wm distro setups like manjaro, arcolinux etc.

I don't care if you like or dislike i3 or any other window manager, but there's a way to say things and there's a way not to do it. I don't moderate this reddit much anymore, but next time this will get you banned from the sub.
