Publications (and presentations)
Most resumes should not have a publications section. Let's make that clear. However, in certain fields, publications are probably the most important part of a resume. Academics, Law, Medicine, Research, Journalism... Even "entry-level" positions in those fields should have a few publications.
Presentations are much the same, but can apply to a wider field. Did you help pitch for a fundraising campaign? Give a public speech? Have a Ted Talk? Those can really help push you over the top for some fields.
The following format is good enough for most publications and presentations. Some fields may prefer a more specific format.
Role: (name) Title or topic. Name of publication(journal, magazine, website, etc.) or Conference [Date]
Point by point:
(name) - If you are the sole author/presenter, then you probably don't have to put your name down. If you collaborated with others, it's a good idea.
Role - What part you took. Lead Author? Presenter?. Support positions are important too. Stagehand? Makeup artist? Researcher? Speechwriter?
Title or Topic - Your book or article title. Your presentation subject. Often a good idea to make this a link to an online source for the publication.
Name - The name of the book/journal/magazine/website where your work appeared. The Conference or meeting where you gave your presentation (Put location if a presentation). If you have written a book, put the publisher.
Date - The publication date or conference date.
If you published in a professional journal, then it's frequently common to put the volume and/or page as well.
Examples:
Author: A Farewell to Arms. Scribner's 1929
Author: Men Walk On Moon. The New York Times July 21, 1969
Presenter: How To Make Your Resume Not Suck. TedX Portland February 30, 2020
Author: Forman, Steele & Babauchan, Underwater Basket-weaving. Journal of Advanced Esoterica March 2021, 3/116
As always, C&C greatly appreciated.
