1 hour Vargskyr, nothing but zenith prime with 3 rattle cans and contrast paint. Loving these models.

They feel a lot like 6th edition Warhammer, and that's praise.
A lot of Mordheim vibes
Damn that looks good
Thanks! These models are so crisp you can paint them like water colors: all contrasts, shades, and medium. Will detail it out later but rn trying to get the bad guys painted quick
Hoo he got a tiny little friend with him ^^ Never go out without your bubbies :p
Best friends forever
Looks great, what colors did you use?
Primed black from below, grey from just above the horizontal, and a zenith spray of Grey Seer.
Pelt is Skeleton Horde wet blended with medium into Wyldwood. Pink flesh is extremely thinned down flesh tearer’s red, and the purple bits are magos Purple. Teeth got gryph charger grey and then a dot of white, nails are black Templar, and then a super thing glaze of Riekland Flesh shade and lahmian medium all over. Only part that requires patience is the dry times.

AWESOME
Did you use an armypainter grey before the grey seer ? I never had the idea you could use grey seer as the "white".
White is relative. Grey Seer is white compared to mechanicus Std grey, and is one of the best model primers I’ve ever used. True white primers can be very troublesome and I don’t recommend them
That’s amazing! I still struggle to blend with medium. Do you paint own part of the belt and then blend up at a time or do you paint the whole pelt THEN blend the next paint over it? I feel like it dries so quickly! There’s hardly any work time
The medium is key to keeping the dry time workable, also half-dry contrast paint will reactivate when medium hits it. Admittedly you have to work fast and confidently. It’s easier if you try getting it relatively thin and adding multiple passes, though it takes longer. I usually lay one color over the whole patch of fur, and then as it’s drying, a thinned down second color, and use the brush to tease them together at the transition.
And you have to build it up in a couple layers, like painting with watercolors
So, the skin is a blend between the membranes and the pelt? Did I miss something?
The pale skin is just a glaze of lahmian medium and Reikland flesh-shade right over the primer
Oh, I see. Thanks a lot!
A very thinned down glaze
standing ovation, sir
varskyr is just so amazing!
How in the hell did you paint something that size in one hour. Last Ork brute I did took me around four!
Organic tissue, fur, and fabric can be cheated by using washes to paint down from a white undercoat, like painting with watercolors on a white canvas. It works best if you use you rattle cans to bake a little bit of shadow and highlight right into the prime-job. Best practice is a bit of black spray from below, grey or midtone from an elevation slightly above horizontal, and then a white spray from vertical or near-vertical (45 degrees off-vertical looks great). This will simulate a lighting effect quick and dirty. After that just add color!
Really nice !
Thanks!
This is the model I want the most. He makes a perfect varghulf courtier.
Yeah although he is a lot more were-wolfy in person than I expected.

I hope you have a youtube channel
The fur looks absolutely incredible.
Thanks! It’s all just trickery. All the fur took less then ten minutes. The trick is wet blending with contrast paints, in this case thinned-down skeleton horde and thinned-down wyldwood. It’s a good formula for timber Wolf fur I find.
Looks great!
Can we as a community however just kind of agree that, if you don't have a rotating platform to film models on, to stop posting shaky videos/gifs of models?
Its impossible to focus and actually appreciate the full detail of the model when its just in someone's hand constantly going in and out of focus and shaking all over.
Like I can tell that this is impressive and looks good, but I would really love to be able to fully appreciate the work that OP put in!
Yeah I’m afraid I don’t have much of a setup for photography of miniatures.
Even just taking a normal picture with your phone vs a shaky video would let us see so much more of the details! You don't have to have a whole professional set up for us to appreciate what you've done! :)
Sounds like a plan. I just posted it on a whim from a video I had sent to a friend. Just wanted to make a point that a boxed set like cursed city seems like an intimidating hobby project, but with the right tricks it won’t take long to paint at all. Next time I’ll get a better shot. Actually this is the first time I’ve ever really posted a hobby WIP online.
Yeah the models look incredible, and its definitely an interesting prospect for a lot of painters to be able to do them up quickly thanks to the advent of contrast paints and the like - and the models almost seem to be designed with something like that in mind!
In my experience, the more recent sculpts seem to take contrast paint a lot better than older sculpts, and you can really work some magic with them if you know what you're doing (as you clearly do)!
How did you get this? Great work!
It’s just a display copy. Vendors and streamers get them early sometimes. The boxed set doesn’t go on sale until Saturday.
Did you Zenithal prime black and then white? Or grey and white?
I have always wondered how Contrast or washes would work over a partial-black prime and was going to experiment myself.
Black then grey than white for a nice smooth transition
Nice, how does the contrast work on the black? I assume there is very little black left in just the recesses?
It’s black only on surfaces that face directly downward, and dark grey where the grey only dusted. The trick is to keep it all directional and don’t drown the model in paint. No need to spray the upper surfaces black and grey if you intend to spray them white afterward. Just adds too much paint
Am I the only one that feels like these models kinda stray away from AoS aesthetic we had until now? I mean, the proportions by themselves could make this a D&D model. AoS models (and 40k for that matter) always felt more "cartoony" to me (except armies like Cities of Sigmar). New skeletons and zombies also look less cartoony and more "movie like". Less epic, more realistic. Pretty interesting design change imho.
This kit feels like an intentional return to a Mordheim sort of aesthetic. Certainly most of the models on the hero’s side are cities of Sigmar models so it makes sense that they are a more low fantasy vibe, and the Vampires all hearken back to the old vampire counts art.
Yeah noticed that. It will be interesting to see them on the table next to some chunkier armies like Stormcast and Slaves to Darkness.
They make those models look appropriately huge and intimidating. Only Radukhar is Stormcast-sized out of the humanoid models.
It feels like John Blanche art, which is what makes them so great. AoS has always felt boring to me, mimicking generic video game/Warcraft style since it's first inception. This game looks remarkable though, and I'll be picking it up for sure!
What I like about Warhammer’s design space (40k and Age of Sigmar) is that there is room For so many different art styles side by side. But I do have a special taste for low fantasy grit and grime.
Also worth pointing out that these are the most crisp, delicate, and detailed miniatures I have ever seen, beating out even the rest of GW’s range. They are really pushing the envelope. If you get a set you’ll see what I mean.
Yeah, amazing details. Loved the old fantasy aesthetic but GW was limited in a way back then by what they could design (I assume due to a lot of old stuff being worse quality plastic, resin or metal), so poses were often pretty dumb looking. But this new dynamic pose trend + more realistic aesthetic on models makes for some really amazing miniatures. Kinda like old tactical marines compared to primaris marines. I'm slightly annoyed that primaris are even bigger than firstborn, but their proportions look waaaaaaaay more realistic. Old school marines just look goofy in comparison.
Yeah and they were the same size as guardsmen and sisters of battle despite towering over them in the art and lore. Never looked right on the table. And it’s easy to forget that Stormcast are also giants, especially without any human-sized models beside them. You can see the scale contrast alongside BoneReapers though, as Mortek guard are the size of ordinary humans.
How do you have this already?
Yeah I’d love to know the same thing so I can get my hand on one too!
Some vendors and channels have received preview copies. Not for sale yet. Release day is Saturday.
