How do you live your life?

Do you have two kids, a dog, and a white picket fence? Do you have a cat and a human partner you love? Media often portrays families as being all the same and that doesn’t necessarily feel “right”.

I (29f) live with my husband (35m) and our fur child, an adorable and vibrant 2-year-old doodle. We own our own home and live in a large metro area in the US.

Also want to add that Husband is first generation American Indian and I’m white, so I’m super thankful we live in a more progressive area where interracial couples are not seen as taboo like many other areas of the state we live in. We work to live, and place high value on travel and experiences. This past year has been tough being forced to stay at home and miss out on a year of travel. We’ve got some fun plans in the works for later this year now we’re both vaccinated!

Got a cat and live by myself in a condo. Don't like kids, not super into romance, so it'll probably be this for a while, maybe a second cat.

I also low key love having a condo-I know some people call it the bad of a house + the bad of an apartment but for me having my own space but not having to worry about the exterior is perfect (and my HOA fee is about the same cost as the water/sewer/trash they cover + they're not the obsessive controlling type so it's a great deal).

This would be me if I hadn't met my husband. I do like kids a lot though, but wasn't like obsessed with having my own. I wasn't into dating or romance and I hated the like... Pressure? I think that's right word, to feel like I needed to be looking for someone, even though I was just a teenager. I'm socially really lazy, and never went on traditional "dates" with my husband. We hung out with friends and family and then were a couple. If I hadn't met him I honestly wouldn't be with anyone, I've never met anyone else I'm the least bit sexually attracted to.

I love animals though and have a lot of those anyway on top of my two kids, who love animals as much as I do.

I seriously just work and hang out with my little family pod and I'm content. If my husband ever died I wouldn't ever be with anyone else again, what's the point? We both are our own people and totally happy to spend time apart and with our own friend's so it's total freedom except the upside we can be like "oh no I already have plans with my SO" and we always back each other up even if we didn't have plans lol.

I like the sound of your life though. I love my alone time I get while kids are at school and I'm off work and just sitting here cuddling the cat and drinking coffee. I sometimes wish I had more independence than I do, but I know I'll be back to it when the kids are older, so I'm content for now, but looking forward to just picking up and doing what I want without having to plan for the kids first.

If you do ever find someone incidentally, make sure you don't settle unless they are chill with you keeping your freedom of "Hey, I'm doing this this weekend" and being okay with it. My husband's like that and I wouldn't have married him if he wasn't lol.

I'm 35, my husband is 40. We have in total 10 kids, 6 from my previous relationship, 2 from his previous marriage, and twins together, with no pets, although our eldest has moved out. We live in a reasonably wealthy town in England.

28F never married, single, no kids, no pets. I feel alone sometimes and other times I like the solitude. I have a good job a nice car and a nice condo.

Edit: what’s with the upvotes!? My life is super depressing lol

I live with my fiancé (we're both 28) in a small Victorian terrace 'cottage' that we own, along with our grey and white cat. We're a mixed race couple, he's white and I'm Chinese. We're located in a family-orientated village so we're probably on the slightly younger end of demographics and a bit of an outlier as we have no kids. We both work full-time, him as a software engineer and me in the charity/public sector.

i'm just moving back in with my dad, because my roommate and i didn't work out. it's fine though, i've got a 80sqm apartment for my own there.

no kids, but a pretty new relationship. it's still that sweet little honeymoon phase, so we'll see how it goes long term.

lockdown (and the fact i can't work how and how much i want to) is taking a huge toll on me, but i love the jobs and the people. i'm technically still in university but i don't really participate in any lectures or exams unless something's really interesting.

few but very close and good friends. like a handful whom i can count on no matter what, so that's nice.

my dad has a dog and my sister has a lot of chickens, all of which i love to spend time with. i personally don't really have time or, honestly, the patience to care for anyone but myself right now. i'd like to have ferrets and a dog someday though.

29 in a serious relationship, working 2 jobs and doing schooling, never want kids, looking to build a house when prices go down. Want dogs and a house near the ocean.

Middle aged, married with kid, have a house and a couple of cars, no fence, no pets, aggressively saving for retirement, spend our downtime doing stuff as a family, each spend time on our own hobbies and interests. Pretty standard stuff. The most non-media portrayal I have is that I'm a middle aged woman who loves to log onto World of Warcraft and kill the shit out of things.

Married for two years, living in a temporary small apartment until we buy our own place (covid made our search harder).

We live in the same town as my in-laws, our place is above their business so they're here often (with masks on). My family lives an hour away, we would visit about once a month before the world ended. Now we talk on a family whatsapp group daily, but haven't seen each other since christmas.

Edit: no kids yet, planning to have two in the near future, after we finally get our place

I'm in my 40s (female) and live in Australia with my partner who's also in his 40s (male). We've been together for 5 years and don't have kids or pets, although we feed the stray cat who turns up when he feels like it. I have a small circle of friends, and my parents passed away in the last six years. We own a small, cozy house and spend most of our time at home as we're both introverts. I work from home and he works out of the home. Most of the time we're happy and content.

I’m (32F) living in Sunny Ca with my awesome Husband . We have no desire to be parents but are looking forward to belonging to a pet someday. We just moved to a nicer rental property in a gated community. Before corona we spent a lot of time with close family and friends and look forward to more travel once this is over.

I'm 33, my husband is 36. We have 3 daughters, two twins and our youngest who was born in December. We live in a rowhome that was built in the 1800s, and we do have a nice little white picket fence we built in front of the small front yard. We both work full time in politics.

I am 25. I have a kid(7), fiancé(28) and a dog. We have fence and non of the sides match. I love my family in an actual loving way. I work from home and he works a trade.

I’m 34, married with a toddler and two dogs. We live in a garden apartment in Manhattan, so I get to live in the greatest city in the world and also have a (tall) picket fence. It’s green though...

I feel very fortunate to have such a nice life, it didn’t always look like it was going to end up so well. There were some difficult years to be sure.
