Game concept vs game mechanics, and the categories for each month

Hello everyone. Thanks for your support. I've been overwhelmed by the amount of ideas, suggestions, and offers.

The Focus on Game Mechanics

I'm not doing the 52 games to improve my programming skills, or to improve my game design skills etc... I'm doing this to discover new and interesting game mechanics. Or maybe existing mechanics, but doing it in different ways.

This is different from game concepts, as ZerothLaw have mentioned.

Game concepts are things like, "A plumber rescues his girlfriend from a gorilla that escaped from the zoo." while mechanics involve the dodging, climbing, timing aspects. Or with Space Invaders, the concept is aliens invading, while the game mechanics are basically a side-view shooting game.

Game concept goes along the lines of what the game is about. Game mechanics goes along the lines of what do you do. Essentially, you can sort of think game mechanics as verbs. In Fruit Ninja, you slice. In Mario, you run and jump. In Braid, there's the time mechanics such as forward and reverse. Facebook games have social mechanics such as visit (your friend), share (broadcast your story on the news feed), trade (an item).

Here Are The Monthly Categories

They're not exactly genres (like platformer, shooter etc...). They're a specific type of category for each month. Within the category, it could be any genre. We'll make 4 games from each category. And for each of the 4 games, we'll need to think up of a mechanic. It's okay if the mechanic is already used in another category. There could be interesting results!

  1. One Button Games: No complicated input like WASD, ctrl, alt, space, XYAB etc... What interesting things can we do using just the mouse and left click? (eg. Peggles, Bejewelled, Fruit Ninja).
  2. 5 Minute Games: These are continuous games that gets progressively harder. No levels. It's called a 5-minute game because the average player usually dies at the 5-minute mark, due to the escalating difficulty.
  3. Logic Centric: Games that focuses on thinking, and solving.
  4. New Nostalgia: Take classic game concepts, and change their mechanic.
  5. Educational: Let's target ages 6-12.
  6. Strictly Mobile: These are intended for mobile devices as they may use features such as gyroscope, accelerometer etc... You can play on the PC but with simulated controls for those.
  7. Interactive Stories: These are targeted to preschoolers. Any writers out there?
  8. Random Verb: Pick a random verb. Create a game that uses that as a game mechanic.
  9. Random Noun: Pick a random noun. Think of the verbs you could do to the noun. Use that as a game mechanic.
  10. Audio Centric: These games focuses on the audio aspect over the graphical aspect. Bonus if the visually impaired could also play without disadvantages. 11. Before & After: Games related to wordplay and puns.
  11. Hotseat Games: Games where multiple people can play, but on the same computer (think simple board games etc...).
  12. Social Causes: Games that can have positive social impact.
  13. Anything Goes: Anything. This is for those interesting ideas out there, but there isn't a category. This category is spread across the months as fillers.

Notes: The order of the categories is not final. I'm open to suggestions.

The majority of these games appear to be casual games. It's preferred, but not necessary. Also note that most of the games are intended to be playable on iOS and Android as well (thus a preference for mouse-only controls). Again, this is preferred, but not necessary.

When you look at these categories, were there any ideas that sparked? I have seen some game ideas you guys have posted that could fit in some of these categories.

Edit: Thanks L3viathn for the suggestion. If you want to make a suggestion, you can add a [category] tag in front of the post. If it doesn't fall into any category, you can post without any tags.

Edit 2: Removed Before & After due to poor response. Hopefully there are more ideas that could fit in the Hotseat Games category. Also added the 13th category, Anything Goes (13 * 4 = 52).
