People who have been in a coma: what is the first thing you remember upon waking up?

Honestly, nothing. The transition from in a coma having wild dreams to awake and hallucinating was pretty seamless. Took about three days of being awake to be grounded in reality again.

I’m glad you had a good transition. I know the feeling of needing time to adjust back to reality, mine was more the shock of waking up and thinking I was still crashing and missing 2 weeks

Yeah, I wouldn’t say it was a good transition. It was definitely frightening and confusing, and that coupled with the muscle atrophy made me feel really helpless.

Oh I’m sorry, I misunderstood. Thank you for sharing your experience with me though, I appreciate you

No worries. Comas are fucking wack.

Had to pee

I’m just imagining waking up and having family, doctors, and nurses being all excited and “I have to pee”

Needing to take a piss

MiniMitsuOP•

Yeah that’s totally understandable

I was just thinking about this, and was curious to see how other people’s experiences differed from my own.

I was comatose for 18 days when I was in high school following a major car accident (asshole ran my car off the road) and the first thing I remember was screaming in terror because I still thought I was crashing. It took me a solid 30+ seconds to realize I wasn’t in my car and was safe in a hospital bed (not counting the 11 fractured ribs and other injuries).

Do you remember anything from the time you were in coma or is it just nothing-ness?

I don’t remember anything at all from when I was in it, which I personally think is a good thing, at least for me. I hate feeling helpless and hearing my family talk to me probably would’ve scared me more.

Edit: I know some people have different experiences/memories while being in a coma, this is just my personal experience

Was in one for 9 days. I remember seeing my Aunt sitting there and feeling trapped because there was a breathing tube down my throat and my hands were tied to the bed. Apparently I had tried to remove the tube, so they put the restraints on.

I imagine that was scary when you woke up, but it’s good that they restrained your hands. Pulling out the tube can be really dangerous if the balloon that holds it in place isn’t deflated, and can make it much more difficult to replace the tube

Never been in one but I like the song "First breath after coma" by explosions in the sky. Maybe give that a listen

I love it! Thank you friend

I can relate, once I got over the shock and adrenaline after I woke up I was FAMISHED

I don't remember anything of the few weeks following my coma because of post-trauma amnesia, but I've been told that my reaction upon seeing my parents after I woke up was first being like yeah of course I know them they're my parents, duh when they asked me whether I remembered them (to check my memory), and then pointing the door vehemently to get out of there because I was ok (I wasn't. At all.)

My first actual memories after are the last few times they checked the evolution of my amnesia, asking basic questions ranging from who are you, how old are you, where do you live to where are you, why are you here, what's the date today.

After the initial shock of the whole “holy shit I’m gonna die” panic when I woke up I did have a decent bit of amnesia, but mine was resolved relatively quickly for how long I was out
