Are there viable careers after acquiring a fluctuating disability?

Sheffield / UK

So, about ten years ago I got CFS/ME and haven't worked since. For those who don't know it's an unpredictable and fluctuating condition characterised by severe pain and fatigue which leaves you unable to do anything apart from lie on a bed and shake. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'm never going to able to have a 9-5 job (or likely even one with any sort of regular hours :/ ) however I want to do something and preferably something meaningful.

Prior to getting ill I was working for Astra Zeneca and have a BSc in biochemistry an MSc in computer science and a PhD in structural biology. These are all pretty niche and not something you can do in your bedroom!

I have experience of programming (thought I certainly wouldn't call it a strength!), stats and scientific writing. The only thing I can really think of that fits my situation is consumptive victorian poet but I'm short of both lace hankies and poetic talent! If anyone has any ideas for careers I could investigate or career resources that might help I would be most grateful. I suspect that I'm going to have to do something for myself on a somewhat ad hoc basis I'm just a bit at a loss as to what.

I would check out scientific writing/editing positions, possibly even freelance. A lot of freelance writers try to end up in oversaturated markets (food, basic tech, entertainment, etc), but there are a lot less who can communicate on a high scientific level. What about textbook writing/editing? I'm not entirely sure what the market is there, but could be worth looking into.

Thank-you. That's something to look into. I'm used to writing papers but maybe I should try and round out my writing by blogging a bit :D
