I have a kindle touch that is stuck on this start up screen:

It won't start on a simple press of the power button. If I hold the power button down until the screen flashes then goes blank it looks like it's about to start up with the loading bar and everything but then drops back into the startup screen. If I plug it into a computer it doesn't register at all. Is there anything I can do to resurrect it or it is it new kindle time?

I'm having a go at learning some lisp using the Land Of Lisp book however I'm having to SBCL rather than the CLISP they use as I'm running on an M1 mac. I'm onto chapter six about reading and printing text and seem to have either hit an oddity or am just confused! They have a very basic say hello function:

(defun say-hello ()
    (print "Please type your name:")
    (let ((name (read)))
(prin1 "Nice to meet you, ")
    (prin1 name)))

which seems pretty standard. However if I call the function in the REPL rather than printing out the "Please type your name: " statement it does nothing until I enter something and then it'll run through the whole function. Am I doing s

(Repost - hopefully the images work this time!)

I have very fine, thinning, frizzy hair which has turned into a prodigious mullet over covid lockdown time. I have an upcoming appointment (Weds 14th) for a hair cut but I have no idea what to have done. It needs to go much short but I'm not sure I'm quite at the head shave or deep buzz yet(?) Any advice would be much appreciated as the internet seems to be showing me the same three things over and over again!

This is basically as bad as it get's - washed and conditioned gives a little more volume and rather less frizz but I though it's probably best to show it at it's worst rather than try and sugar coat it!

Advice

Slightly melodramatic title but there you go!

OK so I need help with my ongoing existential crisis; I'm (still) struggling with feeling useless and unproductive after developing a disabling condition.

Potted history; I have BSc in biochemistry and MSc in computer science and a PhD in structural biology. I've worked in web programming (not my first choice but I needed a job after graduating!) then worked in artificial intelligence and natural language processing for about ten years at a university before landing a contracting job at a pharmaceutical company doing ontology engineering. At the end of that contract I got swine flu and pneumonia in quick succession which left me with M.E. and

I have a note 8T which, after it failed to restart properly for a day after I switched it off, I deleted all the data to do a factory reset. The furthest it's gone is to the step where you have to authenticate it against the mi id service (which seemed to work fine) but now it's just hanging on a searching for updates for several minutes then resetting and dropping into the "connect to the internet" page then back to searching for updates in a repeating cycle. Is there any way out of this or is the phone and ex phone?

So, about ten years ago I got CFS/ME and haven't worked since. For those who don't know it's an unpredictable and fluctuating condition characterised by severe pain and fatigue which leaves you unable to do anything apart from lie on a bed and shake. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'm never going to able to have a 9-5 job (or likely even one with any sort of regular hours :/ ) however I want to do something and preferably something meaningful.

Prior to getting ill I was working for Astra Zeneca and have a BSc in biochemistry an MSc in computer science and a PhD in structural biology. These are all pretty niche and not something you can do in your bedroom!

I have experi

I got the latest security update this morning (12.0.3.0(QCEUXM) and after 12 hours it's still not completed! The phone comes on but pretty much none of my apps will run and if I do try and run one it reboots the phone. Is this just a giant update or has something gone horribly, hideously wrong?

I have an agoraphobia diagnosis as part of long standing anxiety issues but there's one symptom / trigger that seems odd and I was wondering if anyone else gets the same. As a bit of background, my agoraphobia is more on the anxiety about places I can't escape from / get immediate help rather than everywhere so I find dentists, barbers, public transport, motorways and staying on my own at home (especially overnight) particularly problematic. One thing that I remember from even before I got my diagnosis is that empty houses can give me panic attacks. Usually at twilight / night if I see a house that's dark and with the curtains open the palpitations start and if I'm in an already anxious plac

I'm not really a gamer though I have to admit that I'm tempted by both Cyberpunk 2077 and Watchdogs Legion so I'm looking at getting a gaming laptop as my new day to day and work laptop. I don't have to carry it around so weight isn't a major issue. I do a fair amount of programming (Python, some Processing and playing with other bits like ChucK) and some graphics work with photoshop and illustrator. I can get a Legion 5P (AMD Ryzen 7 4800H/RTX 2060/256GB SSD/8GB RAM/144Hz 300Nits FHD IPS) for about £800 where a pro (AMD Ryzen 5 5600H/RTX 3060/ITB SSD/8GB RAM/165Hz 500Nits WQXGA IPS) would cost me about £1300. Given my use case is the increase in price really worth it?

I was chatting with a fellow M.E. friend this morning about how pain for us is mainly in the joints and when it hits the muscles it seems to be more at the attachment points rather than in the body of the muscle. This got us wondering if there's a connective tissue issue with the pain. Is this type of pain common among other M.E. people out there?

I have a math problem that I'm struggling with finding the right approach. I'm given an N*N state transition matrix with some of the states being terminal. Given that I start in state zero and I always reach a terminal state how do I calculate the probabilities of reaching each terminal state.

To give a concrete example a given matrix might look something like:

01oo1
40030
00000
00000
00000

I can work out the probabilities for each transition by dividing the number a cell by the sum of the row it's in but from there I can't see where to go to get the probability of reaching each of the five states. Any pointers on the right app

My note 8t has started misbehaving itself! I tried to make a call last night and the phone froze and I had to press the power button to get it to restart. Since then it's been randomly freezing then restarting. Some apps (e.g. facebook) seem to work OK others (e.g. most games) won't start and some basic systems such as the backup won't work.

Most of the fixes I can find for freezing seem to be related to sticking on the fastboot screen which isn't the problem here; it seems to go through the boot OK it just won't run properly then reboots.

Any ideas why this might be or what I can do to remedy this would be gratefully received!

Has anyone else noticed a bunch of weird glitches in the game over the past few days (I'm playing on a xiaomi redmi 8t for context). I've noticed that sometimes in PVP choosing your character's action picks the action to the right of the one you select, choosing who to attack seems to select a random opponent and when I was a few energy down for starting a battle and tried to purchase them it double purchased the energy. All these seem to be totally erratic and will happen randomly rather than with any obvious pattern.
