Is there any chance at all Atlanta Falcons draft a QB with 1st round pick?

I am a Lions fan and would love to see Lions walk away with either Sewell, Pitts, or Chase.

Unfortunately the only way I could see the draft playing out this way is if Atlanta decides to take a QB instead of selecting one of those guys.

It seems like the current contract they have with Matt Ryan makes taking a QB this year highly unlikely.

You guys think there is any chance they take one?

There is definitely a chance they take one but I think they trade back

SomeRandomRealtor•

They’re better off taking a trade or Pitts. Ryan’s contract means whoever they choose will sit for 2 years. I don’t think you spend an early first round on a player you sit for 2 years.

57

Gonna be a bidding war for pick 4 if the 9ers take Mac. They could get a really nice haul and only drop down to 8-9.

SomeRandomRealtor•

For sure. If you can get a 2022 first and a 1st swap + 2nd this year, that’d be worth it.

benedictcumberpatch:Chargers: Chargers•

I don’t think the demand for 4 is going to be as high as people think and if Atlanta trades down, they might get less than what they’d want. Supposedly Denver isn’t trading up, Carolina COULD trade up for Sewell but if Cincinnati is taking Chase, why not just trade with Miami at 6 instead? I think all the teams in the back half of the top 10 will still have great options to fill needs if they just stay put so I don’t think there’s a big need to trade up for them. I’m sure someone outside the top 10 wants to trade up but would Atlanta really want to trade out that far? I think they stay at 4 and take Pitts or a QB and figure out Ryan’s contract later like Philadelphia did with Wentz.

9
bbenbbuchanan:Broncos: Broncos•

Um what? Where did you see Denver isnt trading up? Last I’ve seen is Denver has already made calls to atlanta about picks.

Did something happen while I was asleep?!

6
benedictcumberpatch:Chargers: Chargers•

Both Benjamin Allbright and Tony Pauline have said Denver is unlikely to trade up. This post has some quotes from Pauline talking about the whole thing...

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/denver-broncos-rumors-dont-expect-a-trade-up-for-a-quarterback/

2

I think Denver is definitely looking to trade up after they see how the 1st 3 picks go. Miami, Atl, Det may love a guy at their spot, but if a trade package they deem better comes in they will then trade out. Especially if only a few spots back. Cincinnati I don’t think is as likely because they need Sewell badly. No non-QB is worth more than what Miami got from the 9ers, so trading back say to the Pats or Bears is quite possible.

1
armed_aperture:Bengals: Bengals•

They need oline but it sounds like they’re going to take Chase.

1

I don’t know think bengals are taking chase. I think Cincinnati is in the position where they want Sewell but if someone trades up and takes him at 4 they are ok with taking chase at 5. It’s a win win for the Bengals because they are getting 1 of the 2 players they want

1
Derp2638:Patriots: Patriots•

I honestly don’t think there will be that much of a bidding war. The only two teams competing for #4 unless someone gets really really stupid is the Patriots and Broncos. I don’t think Atlanta would trade back past 15 unless someone gave them a freaking kings ransom that was insane. I think also these two teams know that if they don’t bite then Atlanta will just choose the best player available, and the Bengals and Dolphins won’t trade back either making it so 7 or 8 will be tradeable and cost less.

If the 9ers pick was a 9 pick position swap still in the top 15 + 2 1st and a 3rd then I can’t possibly see my team or the Broncos offering more than a swap + 2022 1st + 2022 second for essentially the 4th Qb in the draft + a 2022 4th rounder or something. Cause those two are the only ones competing realistically for the pick. If they both stand pat on it then Broncos/Patriots could either wait or trade for 7 or 8 which is much cheaper.

I think a lot of people are inflating how valuable #4 is. And I think the two teams closest to 4 that need a Qb Patriots/Broncos also know that any team trading up to get a Qb will be paying more than the 9ers and no one is paying that much for the 4th Qb in the draft.

TrexTacoma:Falcons: Falcons•

Eh it's definitely possible for a team like Chicago or Washington to package their firsts in 21 and 22 if they really like a guy who's there at 4.

1
Derp2638:Patriots: Patriots•

It’s possible but I don’t see it being likely. Since they are out of the top 15 they have to probably give up more than the 49ers gave up. I mean 4 is less valuable than 3 by a bit but moving back 16 spots compared to 8 and out of the top 15 means they’d probably have to give up a ton of capital.

I could easily see something like 3 1st + 1 2nd + 2 3rds/ something ridiculous. I don’t think Atlanta would be interested in moving back that far. Only if it was a ridiculous offer like the one above could I see them going that far back.

1
brbpizzatime:Bills: Bills•

They'd sit for two on account of Matt Ryan still being a good quarterback, too. Guys like Ryan and Stafford aren't why their teams aren't winning

10
SomeRandomRealtor•

I don’t disagree at all. Ryan is still a top 12 QB for me, the contract just makes it a fools errand to replace him now.

6
nlocniL:Jets: Jets•

True but they won't be picking this high for a really long time, especially if they get Pitts.

It's hard to find a good young QB like that

4
benedictcumberpatch:Chargers: Chargers•

DO they have to sit for 2 years though? We just saw Philly dump Wentz while eating a huge chunk of his contract. Wouldn’t sticking with Ryan solely based off his contract just be committing to the sunk cost fallacy?

2
SomeRandomRealtor•

I think the difference is that Wentz was genuinely terrible this year and Ryan was only mediocre, by his standards. Atlanta had the 28th best rushing game last year, meaning Ryan dealt with coverage sacks because defense didn’t commit resources to the run. ATL had the 23rd most sacks allowed. Not saying Wentz didn’t have challenges, the Eagles offense is atrocious, but Ryan wasn’t wrecked by last year.

4
grisioco:Falcons: Falcons•

If anyone is wondering, ryan's stats were:

4,581 yards

26 td

11 int

93.3 rating

12
Derp2638:Patriots: Patriots•

Ryan is a great Qb that puts up awesome numbers for a guy that to my knowledge doesn’t have an O-line or running game.

3
benedictcumberpatch:Chargers: Chargers•

Sure I get that Ryan wasn’t Wentz-level of bad but he’s also getting up there in age as well. But if Fields is there at 4 and they think Fields can give them a better shot in the future than Ryan can, I just think Ryan’s contract isn’t as big of an obstacle as people think it is. Fields sitting there at 4 is a hard decision and either way makes sense. It’s a new HC and GM too so I wouldn’t be shocked if they wanted to go in on a new QB.

5
Rocktamus1:Eagles: Eagles•

Oh man, Matt Ryan threw for 4500 yards 25+ tds and 11 picks. Wentz was benched for poor play. They aren’t even in the same stratosphere.

2
trashatfantasy:Buccaneers: Buccaneers•

I’ve got a buddy of mine that’s a Falcons fan and this is his wishlist for draft night.

  1. Take Fields if he’s there

  2. Trade down for a haul

  3. Trade down with Pace for an even bigger haul

  4. Draft Pitts

23
Atlanta-Anomaly:Falcons: Falcons•

If Fields is there we take him I think.

12
Fulminatabringer21:49ers: 49ers•

4
ScatterclipAssassin:Falcons: Falcons•

Maybe Mac Jones could give you a belly bump to help you up and over.

1
DropC:Falcons: Falcons•

I hope you're right so we can take Pitts without any guilt. But bro, you guys have Shanahan, he's definitely a Lance guy.

2
endofautumn:Falcons: Falcons•

Dude, you know its more likely to be Lance or Jones. Maybe get used to the idea it might not be Fields.

2
TrexTacoma:Falcons: Falcons•

I don't think it'll be Mac Jones like the media is trying to sell us. I also don't think it's fields, but rather trey Lance.

1
Tireseas:Falcons: Falcons•

It wouldn't shock me, but then again neither would trading back or taking Sewell, Pitts or any of several other lesser but arguable options. The only thing that would shock me is trading up.

10
InVodkaVeritas:Jets: Jets•

Sewell makes the most sense unless there's a dream trade scenario.

0
ScatterclipAssassin:Falcons: Falcons•

As much as I want to bolster the line, the issue is interior and not tackle. Sewell may end up being better than Jake Matthews, but I believe that we need interior linemen more. Also I hope that former offensive lineman Arthur Thicc Smith improves the play of the existing line with scheme and coaching, in which case we really aren’t helping ourselves with Sewell.

2
InVodkaVeritas:Jets: Jets•

I agree that Sewell isn't the overwhelmingly best fit, but for who the talent is in this class, if you stay at 4 he's the best fit. He's going to be an All Pro OL and he can absolutely play RT or LG at an All Pro level.

  • The 3 best OGs in the NFL over the past 7 year were drafted 6th (Quentin Nelson), 5th (Brandon Scherff), and 16th (Zack Martin) so spending early on an LG has precedent and pays off. You don't have to use the "scavenge the middle rounds for a decent Guard" strategy.

  • A lot of the best LTs ever started off at RT or LG their first 1-3 years. It isn't unusual at all to draft an elite LT even though you already have a good LT and then put them at LT long term when it makes sense to do so.

  • 92% of teams in the PFF era who have 2 top 25 OTs overall in the NFL make the playoffs. Having an elite RT and LT pays dividends for your QB and RB and thus the rest of the offense.

I know yall spent a late 1st on a RT that has been decent when not injured, but with a hole at LG and an injury prone but decent RT Sewell helps your team immediately. Not drafting Sewell because a previous investment that hasn't produced ideal returns but might be good if he gets healthy and coached up is poor investment bias.

Drafting Sewell protects Ryan for his last few years and can either pair with Matthews for the next 6-7 years or replace him in 2-3 years when it makes sense to move on contractually if he wears down in his 30s.

3
ScatterclipAssassin:Falcons: Falcons•

I was all on the Sewell train until recently, but I’ve moved on because I ... probably have read too much. I’m just ready for it to be over with we can get to OTAs or something else. This prognosticating is too much for me.

2
Thor_2099:Dolphins: Dolphins•

I think it's a chance but a slim one. Matt Ryan still relatively young. They should take Pitts or trade back for D.

8
averageduder:Patriots: Patriots•

Matt Ryan will be 36 in a few weeks.

20
MegaRAID01:Seahawks: Seahawks•

Same age as Aaron Rodgers when the Packers drafted Jordan Love last year.

2
averageduder:Patriots: Patriots•

Well there's a difference between the 4th pick and 26th, and I think most people currently think of the Love pick as a mistake.

Duval11:Jaguars: Jaguars•

Brady will be 44 next season

Favre made it to 41, Brady is obviously the outlier and not the norm.

2

Matt Ryan's injury history is just as if not better than Brady's

1
cstransfer:NFL: NFL•

They shouldn't

4
EZAF-Bayleaf:Patriots: Patriots•

Matt Ryan still got some gas so you want to go all in on him, plus selecting the "4th best" when you could just tank some time in the future for the "best" QB in future draft class is recipe for mediocrity.

4
Derp2638:Patriots: Patriots•

Yup. They’d be really stupid to even entertain the possibility of sitting a rookie behind Ryan for a few years when the rookie could possibly not even pan out. Especially when Ryan is a pretty damn good Qb. Matt Ryan is 35. He has 4-5 good years left maybe 6-7 if lucky. With his contract no one is trading for him either.

There best bet is either drafting down to us or the Broncos or moving down a few spots with someone else and still having a top 10 pick. Especially when they need O-line and Defense.

It will blow my mind if they take a Qb

0
FromAshyToClassy:Jets: Jets•

If fields is still there I could see it. But overall, unlikely.

3
npeachyy:Patriots: Patriots•

Hypothetically if the 49ers draft Mac Jones and the Falcons are very high Fields or Lance they could draft 1 of them to sit behind Matt Ryan for 1-2 yrs

3
Se7enStarss•

I think there's a very low chance they take a QB. I am in the minority though that they should try and trade down. I think they could get a decent haul and they need to build up some capitol imo. I know people want Pitts but I think they need more than that.

3
newme02:Saints: Saints•

I never see it mocked anymore but I feel like Fields to Atlanta is both possible and beneficial for the falcons.

2
primetimejay:Falcons: Falcons•

Possible that Sewell falls regardless. Because the dolphins are almost definitely going for a skill position, so if the Falcons take Pitts and Bengals take chase then Miami most likely takes one of the Alabama wrs.

2
joosh34•

I don't think it's definite, but it makes sense. I think Dolphins are A-okay with missing out on Chase/Sewell because they are wanting either Waddle or Smith.

1
AHABIB15•

I keep telling myself that the new regime is going to want a new Qb that better fits Smiths scheme and that Sewell falls to 7...

1
Duval11:Jaguars: Jaguars•

They will be trading down. Question is who will pay more: the Broncos, Pats, or Bears?

1

I too am a lions sad boi, I think there is a better chance they either trade or draft pitts, but I will say I think the combined chance of them trading out and someone else drafting a QB or drafting a QB themselves is probably higher than drafting pitts/sewell

1
Metafirebird:Broncos: Broncos•

I think they may take Lance, Pitts or trade back for Surtain.

1
GauudBody•

People saying a team could trade up at 4 for a qb. Hell I think there is a chance teams trade up to 4 for Pitts.

1
DropC:Falcons: Falcons•

-Trade down for the haul.
-Roll the dice and pick Fields if he's there.
-Make the safe pick and get Pitts.

In that order.

1
flipm0de2727•

I guess there’s always a chance but I just don’t see it. With Ryan under contract until after the 2023 season they’d be redshirted for two years unless they want to eat a Wentz-like dead cap hit (not ideal in a rebuild with new regime). BPA or trade back. Personally I’d trade back.
