Edit: I made mine thanks to this video. Don't know if they're the original inventor.

Components:

  • 2x BRÄDA laptop stand from IKEA - €9.98
  • 4x SIBBHULT shelf bracket from IKEA - €2

Nuts, bolts etc - €3

  • 8x M5 40mm bolts
  • 4x M5 30mm bolts
  • 12x M5 nuts
  • 16-24x M5 washers

Prices may vary (I live in the Netherlands).

Drill holes through the plastic laptop stands at preferred height. Bolt everything together and presto!

You might get away with only 40mm bolts, but the two bolts at the front might damage your desk. Should have tested that, sorry!

Hey thanks. I jumped the gun there. I made the original video!

Ironically of all my music uploads to YouTube and Soundcloud this video of how to make a cheap synth stand remains my most successful moment 🤣🤣

Oh hey! I saw your video a few months ago and instantly wanted to build one. As soon as the lockdown lifted last week, I drove to IKEA and my local hardware shop to get started!

I make animations for a living and it's always the low-effort shitposts that get the views, haha!

Now you’ve got to buy an Elektron synth and go full Swede

Man, I see so many Electrons on this sub. What makes them so great?

Love it! Necessity is the mother of invention.

Also, necessity is the invention of your mother!

I needed that one 🤣

I have no idea why they discontinued and then changed the design of the original brackets used for this build including the black ones. Luckily I managed to grab a few sets before that. I would recommend using larger washers on the very bottom screws as it will help disperse the stress from everything ontop of it. Especially important on mine as I have hydradynth / mpc live combo which is pretty heavy

Ah, good point, u/jimmywheelo1973 did use very large washers in his original build. I couldn't find them in my hardware shop.

Oh and also grab some of those little stick on rubber dots that come with guitar pedals and stick them ontop of the screws to avoid scratching surfaces. They come in a range of sizes if needed.

That's a great idea! Right now the DrumBrute is sitting on a layer of foam I had lying around, but your solution makes more sense.

You know you've got me thinking. Might make a new one for my incoming MS101. 🤔

Also might try and see if I can improve on the use of 2 x hinges with something more bespoke.

I did try plastic 20mm conduit previously as the divider between stands but it wasn't straight forward.

My only issue with the current design is that the brackets mounted on the bottom tray get in the way of bigger hardware (like my DrumBrute and Neutron). Maybe mounting the support on the backside of the tray would be a good option, but it will be less sturdy and you'll have to figure out a different support design. I still very much like mine!

Yes you're correct.

I'm just looking at 8mm threaded steel rod. Screwfix do 5 x 30cm pieces for £4.62.

Much stronger and less intrusive size wise. Could be an option. Will see how it goes.

This is awesome. I've been looking into designing a sturdier stand for my MF and M:C, this might be a good option to replace the cardboard one I whipped up a few weeks ago.
