It wasn't particularly close between Hedman and the rest of the pack:

  1. Hedman (22-6-1)
  2. Fox (5-11-5)
  3. Makar (1-6-8)

Reminder: coaches don't actually vote for the Norris, so this was just a fun exercise

Theo at 4 with 2-5-6 is what I'm here for.

JD397:NHL-CHI1: CHI - NHL•

I wonder how many coaches outside of the Central are even paying much attention to Hedman this year.

22
griffs19:NHL-DET5: DET - NHL•

I’m sure an NHL coach is aware of what’s going on around the league.

10
JD397:NHL-CHI1: CHI - NHL•

I mean, yea I’m sure they at least have a general idea but their job is to play against only 6-7 teams this regular season.

I wouldn’t be shocked to hear a lot of them didn’t really watch Lightning footage all that carefully this year, because what’s the point? No coach outside the Central will face Hedman until the ECF so there is almost no point in scouting him this year.

14
roboninja:NHL-EDM1: EDM - NHL•

When they are not playing those teams, with a compressed schedule? I doubt it very much actually.

I'd be super curious to see the breakdown of votes by division. Like, did all the Central coaches vote for Hedman? Or did some of them look elsewhere?

Really cool to see Fox and Makar up there, I feel like they might end up trading it back and forth a few times in years to come

HockeyCoachHere•

Makar was a runaway favourite before he got injured earlier in the season. Has been a little slower this year, but is stellar defensively and on a 1.05 point-per-game pace.

In fact, his career P/GP is among the all time greats (obviously, funny to do when he's so young).

But that list right now is (in order)

Bobby Orr 1.39
Harry Cameron 1.10
Paul Coffey 1.09
Denis Potvin 0.99
Ray Bourque 0.98
Cale Makar 0.95

But yeah, maybe they will. :-)

WildThingsKing:NHL-NYR6: NYR - NHL•

Name game. They will go deep into playoffs and he will win. TBH it should be between McAvoy and Fox. And probably Makar

76
AustonsNostrils:NHL-TOR9: TOR - NHL•

I'm pretty sure the votes are in before the playoffs start.

36
eatingasspatties:NHL-EDM3: EDM - NHL•

Yeah I think they’re all voted on before playoffs except the Conn Smythe (obviously), and I think the GM award is voted on in the middle of the playoffs? Could be wrong there.

12
AmidoBlack:NHL-WSH4: WSH - NHL•

Thankfully all the "buzz" I hear among the people that matter is that Fox is a serious contender (I think he should win it). Hedman is just a household name and this was among coaches, who don't vote on it from what I understand

13
toolschism:NHL-TBL1: TBL - NHL•

Oddly enough, the only part of this statement I disagree with is the fact that you think we will go deep in the playoffs.

Hedman has been downright bad the last month or so and by no means deserves the Norris. He's a fantastic defender but this year was just not a good year for him.

3
frankthomasofficial:NHL-CHI1: CHI - NHL•

Hedman is fine in the top 3. Hes elite still even if not the most deserving of actually winning compared to fox

2
commazero:NHL-EDM4: EDM - NHL•

Nurse should be up there in consideration.

NOT NOW

colin6:NHL-NYR5: NYR - NHL•

The last fucking thing I care about is Fox winning Norris right now...

DaRealAnthony:NHL-NYR1: NYR - NHL•

THIS IS NOT THE FUCKING TIME TO PISS OFF RANGERS FANS PLEASEEE

21
CruelRuin•

yeah stats wise this hasn’t been his best season but his reputation was spotless after tb’s title win

none of the other big names really had a standout season either and the guys that had the best results are kinda younger. next season guys like fox and mcavoy will def get more buzz. mcavoy in particular has been an elite dman for at least 2-3 seasons

if makar didn’t get hurt he might’ve had the best challenge since he had a strong playoff performance last year but he missed like 20 games I think

17
Pavrik_Yzerstrom:NHL-DET1: DET - NHL•

It really should be Fox, I don't think it's particularly close either. Hedman has been good, but not that level of good this season.

11
mr_kil:NHL-TBL4: TBL - NHL•

Not on a playoff team, though, does hurt his chances I think.

6
Pavrik_Yzerstrom:NHL-DET1: DET - NHL•

It shouldn't but you're right

10
thet1m:NHL-TOR8: TOR - NHL•

It’s bullshit. The coaches are quoted as saying they haven’t watched many players outside their division. So how is Hedman showing up on every ballot but Fox isn’t? Reputation.

11
eebro:NHL-MTL1: MTL - NHL•

LeonardSchraderpacke:NHL-MTL1: MTL - NHL•

Just shows how much of a reputation award the Norris is, race should be closer imo

4
specifichero101:NHL-NJD1: NJD - NHL•

Is this really a robbery of fox like everyone claims it is? He is a great young dman, but is he obviously the best in the league right now? I know he absolutely went off on scoring while the rangers were filling the net nightly. If it wasn’t for that streak would he be the consensus pick of Reddit like he is now? Genuinely curiois

4
Lyun:NHL-CBJ4: CBJ - NHL•

There is no metric in which Hedman is better than Fox other than number of Norris Trophies.

5
x_Neomop:NHL-VAN1: VAN - NHL•

I feel like the Norris Trophy award is a bit of a farce nowadays - it's more of a reputation award than anything else now.

If you remove the names off the players and just labelled them A, B, C with no prior knowledge of their past play or future potential, I think voting would be a lot closer than it is this year.

4
frankthomasofficial:NHL-CHI1: CHI - NHL•

As someone unbiased with money bet on hedman already. I am rooting for hedman

GetCPA•

As well he should
