The New Apple Watch to Feature Significant Redesign: Circular?

I'm just amused by how silly the speculation gets. It won't be circular, that's just the laziest, most clickbaity thing they could come up with.
My guess is that it'll have flatter edges and be slightly curved to fit the hand better.
I don’t understand why people identify videos as lazy clickbait and then proceed to share them
Because it's hilarious. While the concept may be extremely lazy, they bothered sitting down and making a meticulous rendering of it (and it looks really stupid) and writing a whole narrative around Apple possibly doing this. It's quite a sight.
I think you’re just here to feed the nonsense clickbait machine.
So be it. Just saw a stupid video in my YouTube recommended, laughed, shared it and was ready it might get downvotes (which it did). Not sure I "fed" anything. So, disaster averted.
It'll be flat top and sides, like the iPhone 12/iPad Pro. Upgrade regular glass to Ceramic Shield.
Not sure why they would make it curved. Normal watches dont curve (the actual backpiece, the bits the straps attach to do, but the applewatch straps incorporate this part of the design).

Well it’s not like the Apple Watch plays by the rules of normal analogue watches considering it’s square. We should get a redesign this year but last time there were design change rumours were that it’ll fall in line with the flat edge designs of the iPhone, iPad and iMac.
Square watches were a thing way before the apple watch.
I wouldn’t call them a “normal analogue watch” though.
Why the fuck would they throw away over 6 years worth of software development? This is so stupid.

To make it circular.
This is so stupid.
That's why it's excellent clickbait.
Then why share it? Brainless
Do we only need to share things we agree with?
I just thought it's really funny. Their 3D renderings of a circular Watch are quite hilarious to me.
Seriously, why did you share it?
To peer check my opinion of the video with this sub. So far, checks out.
I hope not. I'd buy a Series 6 if this year's watch was circular (although I don't think it will be).
I feel like if they were going to do round, they would have done that from the get go
Indeed.
Round is cliche; go for for cuttlefish-pupil shape.
Please no, square is far more info dense
I hope not, unless the workout how to show the same amount, or more, content in a round view
So after Apple claiming that round watches don't make sense when competition does it, they will now do it as well? 🤔
Apple claiming something makes no sense is a bit of a mixed bag.
It kinda varies. But I'm also inclined to believe them this time about the watch.

It’ll more than likely be square edges like new iPhone, iPads, iMacs
One unified design language
I wonder if it'll be comfortable. Cause sharp edges sounds a bit uncomfortable.

Anything is possible but I think there’s a reason Apple didn’t go with a circular design in the first place. This is Apple, a design centric company so the fact that in this rare time they followed function over form it says to me while a circular design is nice it’s not a good experience. Maybe they found a way though.

Nah, no way. The Apple Watch is an iconic design.
Hmm that alone is possibly not a great reason because look at iPhone's iconic designs and how often those are changed.
Right, but it’s still rectangular. With a watch you can only really have to shapes, square or circle. Show me the circular iPod or iPhone… it makes no sense to handicap your screen estate, battery life, space for hardware etc to make Apple Watch look more like a regular watch.
Right. So it's not about the iconic design. It's about only rectangle (or square) make sense.
...no? I never said that.
This is as ridiculous as the notchless rumor for iPhones. It won't ever happen.
I'd say this is more ridiculous, because while indeed we get false notchless rumors every year, if Apple could do it, they would.
In this case Apple could've always made a circular Watch. They didn't want to, for UI reasons. But there we go.
I hope Apple removes the digital crown. It's annoying.
What about it annoys you?
I press/rotate the digital crown many times by mistake while doing workouts and other things.
I suggest you switch which side it’s on. I used to take a lot of screenshots by mistake when I had the buttons pointing toward my hand, but now I have the buttons facing inward and have never accidentally pressed them.
Ah gotcha. I know that how you wear your watch is total personal preference, but I learned recently that the “proper” place to wear a watch is a bit higher up on the forearm, past the bump on your wrist instead of on top of it. I started wearing it higher and it felt weird at first, but I quickly got used to it. Now, even if I bend my hand all the way back, say if I’m doing push-ups, I don’t press or turn the crown.
Wearing it higher on the arm also keeps it from compressing the carpal tunnel area which is a huge long term benefit.
I know this can come across as “you’re wearing it wrong” or whatever but I don’t mean for it to sound that way. Just something that could be worth trying.
This could be corrected by modifying slightly how the crown activates.
It sounds like you’re wearing your watch too low (or too loose).
I flipped mine around so it's toward my elbow. It's a setting in watchos.
I think it would be a bad move to break compatibility with existing watch bands, and that alone is enough to not switch to a round body. Not to mention all the screen real estate you lose; so many faces that have complications in the corners would be unusable. A lot of current faces would be unusable.
I guess we’ll see what the new design ends up looking like, but I don’t think it will be a drastic departure from current models.
Yes, round aint gonna happen.
Love when people make these bold claims when Apple have shown time and time again that they don’t mind doing big redesigns that break compatibility. Lol
We'll see, but my money is against round. (lost screen real estate for written material, etc.)
The band system does lock the Apple Watch into a particular kind of design, and that in itself shouldn’t prevent Apple from changing it after now seven years, if they feel they can build something better. The watch can’t stay the same forever, and at some point they’re going to have to piss people off in order to advance.

I doubt Apple is going to fragment the watch experience with round AND circular versions. If they go circular, it will all eventually be circular, after transitioning in that direction.
You mean Apple could sell a bunch of new accessories to people who are upgrading? This hasn't stopped them from changing the casing of the iPhone. The biggest issue isn't space either, it's definitely compatibility with existing apps.
I can’t upvote this enough, Apple has done little enough for app developers as it is and making it harder for them seems like a bad move without at least finding some way to mitigate (say, by putting third party apps closer to first party such as is the case on the iPhone).
6 years of compatibility isn’t bad though.
I think the bigger issue is text. Displaying a text or email on a round screen would suck.
