If someone nabs one of these, PLEASE test plex streaming!!!! This could be the end of using nvidia cards with hacked drivers!!

I seem to remember something about DG1 only working on systems with a compatible BIOS or something to that effect. So we might be waiting for DG2 for that.

14
severanexp•

Haven’t read anything regarding that o.o guess we just need to wait a bit for confirmation.

2
WeirdArtist3673•

Yeah, it sounded like this only exists so they could have a GPU option for OEMs to go with F CPUs to me. Effectively an iGPU.

I'm curious why are hacked drivers needed? plex works fine for on my rx 580

11
190n•

IIRC people use hacked drivers to bypass a limit on how many hardware encoding streams you can run simultaneously (by default it's capped on their consumer cards).

38
severanexp•

Nvidia gpus are used because they have (afaik) more codec compatibility and better decoding capacity. But they have a 2 (I believe this was bumped to 3 nowadays) streams limit. Say you have 4 friends watching something with you with the “watch together” function - can’t do that with the gpu.

I believe the Radeons have no limit, I did try a 280x and the quality was worse than my intel 4th gen igpu, so o gave up on it pretty quickly. Hope this context helps!

18
piexil•

Plex also just doesn’t fully support amd gpus. It’s a plex issue

11
severanexp•

Have fun reading for additional context: “Windows-specific Notes If your Windows computer also has a dedicated graphics card, such as an NVIDIA or AMD* GPU, some functions of Intel Quick Sync Video may become unavailable when the GPU is in use. If your computer has one of these GPUs, please install the latest NVIDIA drivers for Windows or AMD drivers for Windows to make sure that Plex can use your dedicated graphics card when Intel Quick Sync Video becomes unavailable. *Note: Our hardware-transcoding system has technical support for many dedicated AMD graphics cards, but we haven’t done official, full testing on those. Support for AMD GPUs is provided “as is” and your mileage may vary. It is recommended that you use Intel Quick Sync Video or a dedicated NVIDIA GPU.”

Link: https://support.plex.tv/articles/115002178853-using-hardware-accelerated-streaming/

Edit: this post is just to offer more context in case anyone wonders why plex doesn’t work well with AMD.

Because AMD doesn't contribute to open source libraries like ffmpeg like Nvidia does, so there's a lot of reverse engineering required to make it compatible with Plex, and it takes a lot of work.

Nvidia provides their encoding libraries and contributes a lot directly to ffmpeg and related projects, which is why support is so much better for Nvidia than AMD. Plex can literally just take what's already there and use it, knowing it's backed by Nvidia. They don't have that luxury with AMD because AMD doesn't contribute anything on their own.

Looks like 3 concurrent sessions for every card listed.

7
severanexp•

3 streams right? I did read about it but wasn’t sure. Cheers for confirming!

1
xenago•

This is accurate. AMD GPUs for h264 are at best a "well it's better than nothing" but they are severely handicapped in terms of concurrent streams and visual quality compared to Nvidia. Intel quicksync is significantly better than AMD for Plex, and Nvidia is a bit better than Intel but basically the same in practice for most users so recent Intel CPUs with built in uhd graphics are the best option cost-wise. I use an RTX 2070 and previously a GTX 1660. The main limit is on vram utilization.

1
GluttonAsteroth•

hoping that artificial product segmentation isn't occurring from Intel...

That's hilarious.

3

Why do you need a discrete GPU for that? The iGPUs have Quick Sync too. And if this blog post is to be believed, considerably less power consumption than Nvidia, unless, perhaps, you have a large number of simultaneous streams to get high utilization on the Nvidia.

2
severanexp•

Because old intel igpu quality was atrocious. Really bad. Unusable. So people went with alternatives. Only the intel 6th started coming with half decent igpus for this.

1

Yes, but these days you can get a Kaby Lake desktop with gen 9.5 IGP for $200.

Or you could DIY with a Comet Lake i3 or Pentium and have internal 3.5" drive support, at the cost of significantly higher idle power.

1
severanexp•

it’s easier and (used to be) cheaper to buy a gtx 1050, slot it in the pc, and install drivers . My gtx 1050 cost 50 euros.

The low power dGPU is just a bit stronger than the laptop integrated, but it's much better than the desktop versions because it has more EUs

Gddr6 is far better than lpddr4x

5
Exist50•

He/she's saying that DG1 is slightly better than TGL-U's implementation, but significantly better than the desktop CML or RKL iGPU, which is what this is being paired with here.

5
iopq•

It has the advantage of higher TDP and clocks

3
Frexxia•

Is it clocked higher? Surely it's easier to cool a dedicated GPU.

1
iopq•

It was already clocked higher in laptops because the iGPU was limited by being next to the processor

1
cheese61292•

I'd say there is still a market for dGPU's that are not exactly "gaming class" parts (e.g. RTX 3050/RX6500 and up).

Especially when it comes to things like Plex servers where iGPUs just can't handle it and cards like the RX 550 or GT 1030 are just too old and are missing features.

6
rockydbull•

things like Plex servers where iGPUs

Unless you are talking about adding this dgpu to an intel system with a very old igpu, I don't see the benefit in plex. Modern igpu in plex can do tons of transcodes.

3
cheese61292•

I was speaking more towards using in older systems. Especially things Sandy/Ivy Bridge where there are tons of hardware out there which could be used for such a scenario but the IGP just isn't worth anything besides showing the desktop and watching a single movie. On the other hand, those i5 and i7 Quads are plenty string enough to handle most other tasks you throw at them in that scenario.

DG1 wont be a big help, unless youre in the market for low end GPUs. Its the flagship DG2 product in 2022 (but some rumors have it as a paper launch late 2021) thats rumored to be 3070-3080 performance, with 1-2 skus lower for the cheaper price points.

I dont know what the GPU market will be like in 6-18 months, but I cant help but feel that if Intel was only a bit quicker with DG2, than Raja would finally have a success and be praised for it. Because this is their window of opportunity to release a GPU without the immense pressure of Nvidia and AMD due to shortages. But on the other hand, DG1 and DG2 are going to get heavily scrutinized, and Intels GPU drivers arent there yet, so releasing it too early would be bad for the brand.

7
My_life__MATTERS•

never thought id say that

I bet AMD wouldn't have hiked prices with the 5000 series as much if Intel hadn't stagnated for so long.

2†
FarrisAT•

If on TSMC, almost meaningless in the short-run.

But in the long-run, a new entrant can only help us consumers.

20
cherryteastain•
25
FarrisAT•

DG2, the die with a big footprint, is on 6nm TSMC from what the rumor mill says. But yes DG1 is Intel

28
Sh1rvallah•

That's not really true. If Intel hadn't already allocated the wafers these were never going to be GPUs from AMD. Those resources were already assigned and if they enter the gpu market in a meaningful way they are contributing to increasing supply.

16
Put_It_All_On_Blck•

Exactly, Intel does and will source from TSMC, but its not like their supply magically takes away AMD's. Intel would be bumping someone else off TSMC 6/7nm, and this contract wouldve been in place before Covid.

Also lets not forget AMD sidelined RDNA2 production to 1. fulfill console contracts 2. produce high margin CPU's first.

The lower end DG cards will be made on intel 10nm, while the flagships are TSMC.

5
FarrisAT•

I think I would prefer more AMD today vs. Intel GPUs in 2022, but I get your point.

-4†
Sh1rvallah•

Yeah it would be better if until I had never allocated the space and AMD had more instead.

-3
Kougar•

So do these cards have the missing EEPROM the Dell DG1's were missing? The firmware was stored on the motherboard which locked them to the host system, and coincidentally Intel boards at that.

16
Smartcom5•

… and coincidentally Intel boards at that.

How can one wonder about that? Remember, Dell being Intel's “Best friend money can buy”?

Just saying, that's a direct quote from Paul Otellini (Intel's CEO at that time) when talking about the $6-ish Billion of rebates they granted Dell in order to avoid them deflecting to AMD's Opteron.

In more interested in Intel lighting a fire under nvidia and amd's asses when it comes to gpus so that they have to make better 200 - 300$ cards

18
MightBeHarassing•

Honestly the biggest help Intel gave us was competitively priced CPUs, like, i've seen a 10400f for 90€, that CPU is better than a r5 3600

12
No_Telephone9938•

So i checked real quick and on amazon the ryzen 3600 is at 210$ while the 10400f is at a 155$, that's just bonkers, never in my life did i expected to see intel becoming the value brand and amd the premium one.

13

That we can agree on.

But do we really want to trust another evil empire. The evil empire.

But do we really want to trust another evil empire. The evil empire.

Well is not like we realistically have another choice, besides Intel who could realistically develop a gpu line up that could compete with amd and nvidia?

10
0xC1A•

Or the Blue can just join Red and Green to complete the evil circle of RGB and screw us all over.

We can only hope for the best.

There are multiple companies that could but Apple is the most likely IMO. They already make great chips and have infinite money to invest.

I don't think anyone expects DG1 to contribute much. More setting the stage for DG2.

16

They are better than the integrated GPUs for Intel, and you can't find the 4700G or whatever in stock anyway, they are probably not getting made anymore

2

If it's clocked significantly faster it might be faster in some cases

1
PlaneCandy•

This seems like it will be slightly faster than current integrated graphics, mainly thanks to higher clocks and better memory bandwidth. As they state, it should do great (provided they have driver support) for casual games, but for AAA games it'll suffer or have to run at low quality and lower resolution.
