Home made gift ideas?

My wife and I live in China with our 10 month old. We'd like to get him a few special items for the holidays but it seems toys these days are just crap. I'm already working on making him this stuffed dragon in a red Chinese patterned cloth. When he's a little older he'll be receiving my old metal Tonka toy collection, but it's a little soon for that. So we hope there are a few other decent suggestions you guys might have.

A big box filled with those plastic balls they have for ball pits.

Cut a slit in a lidded cardboard container and fill it with the tops from glass jars. It's an instant shape sorter. I made one for my son and he played with it for hours.

Fill a tube with beans, cover the ends securely (sew a fabric tube for it if you're handy with a sewing machine, or cut a piece of plastic and epoxy it) and you have an instant maraca.

in reference to the last suggestion if you also drive some nails into the outside of the tube that go about 3/4 of the way through then cover it, you have a rain stick.

OMG! The dragon is now on my list for DSs birthday. Too cool!

For Christmas I'm making him a fishing game using magnets and fabric fish. And 2 stuffed dinosaur tails that will attach to a belt.

You could look on etsy for other home made (but not at your home) gifts.

Would love to, but shipping to China is rather difficult :\

I used Etsy as my "Well, crap...I can do that!" idea generator.

I think this will show you etsy users who are based in China, so hopefully they could ship to you without difficulty:

Wood blocks! Best present we ever got from our construction worker Uncle. Asked for more every B-day and Christmas. He always delivered. :)
