Factory reset problem with a Note 8T

I have a note 8T which, after it failed to restart properly for a day after I switched it off, I deleted all the data to do a factory reset. The furthest it's gone is to the step where you have to authenticate it against the mi id service (which seemed to work fine) but now it's just hanging on a searching for updates for several minutes then resetting and dropping into the "connect to the internet" page then back to searching for updates in a repeating cycle. Is there any way out of this or is the phone and ex phone?
