I went op shopping and swap meeting on the weekend and got some fantastic bargains.

A very well used painting ladder (which just needs some screws tightened), an old Sunbeam Mixmaster that is probably older than I am, but was built back in the days when they used metal gears instead of plastic ones and will probably outlive me, and two rusty but working vices (one wood working, one metal working), partially because I have uses for them, but mostly because I have been watching waaaay too many YouTube videos about people restoring old tools.

A few other things as well, but those three set me back the princely sum of $60. If you look at how much vices (even rusty ones) go for, that's an absolute bargain.

TheBoneDeath•

All my vices - some of them rusty - have cost me a lot more money than that. And dignity. Okay mostly dignity.

Well done on the savings!

11
washed_bong•

Wish my vices were that cheap, shame I cant buy weed and psychedelics at swap meets.

plagueisthedumb•

I've seen a few tie dye stores with an old bloke wearing a Grateful Dead jumper on, for sure got some.

1
TarquinFarquin•

Home brew beer, and wanking. Cheapest vices around.

I have seen a buch of these over the years, all working well 😊

leemurLet me pat your dog or I ban you•

They are basically just a motor with a dial, so there are practically no points of failure. Not a single circuit board, so it can't tweet me to tell me that my mixing is done or send details of my mixing habits to China. It just mixes till the heat death of the universe.

but mostly because I have been watching waaaay too many YouTube videos about people restoring old tools.

Those are quite satisfying! I've been watching them restore old air compressors purchased by scrap weight in Indian junkyards, pertinent as I was gifted a good quality, but old air compressor.

Also have a nice vice i found at suburban recycling depot! An anvil is the holy grail though.

leemurLet me pat your dog or I ban you•

Most metal working vices are designed to be able for you to beat on the bar, but the size is pretty small. I've seen cheap-ish anvils made from old railways tracks, and if they can handle a train, I am sure they can handle a hammer.

3
Captain-Peacock•

True! I'm no blacksmith, but I just like the idea of an old anvil! Too much watching those picker shows I think.

Not sure if Merry or Fuckwit.

I've come across an old Uncle a couple of times fishing in the man-made reserve near me that I know for a fact you can't fish in. I pass him as I run laps. I've even tried speaking to him in my shit broken Mandarin before, but couldn't get him to understand.

Anyway, first lap, ran by. Uncle looks at me, I look at him. Doesn't look like he's caught anything yet, so I let it go.

2nd lap.

Uncle checking a float line he has dangling in the water. Three Huge fucking fish on it in lieu of a catch bucket. My mandarin isn't good enough to tell him that you can't fish here because the fish, birds and plants combine so that the reserve doesn't become a bug infested malarial dump. Simply tell him in Mandarin that he can't. He repeats several times that he can. Eventually he shows me a photo of his rec fishing licence. I make feeble attempts to tell him for Oceans and Swan River, not a problem. Not even going to attempt to tell him that he won't need it if fishing off a land point, that falls in the too hard basket right now.

Point out City of Stirling phone number. Tell him "Speak", make phone call signal with hand.

He smiles and says "Ok".

Stands there, not doing much. Clearly giving zero fucks.

So I go to his float line and start bringing it out whilst trying to keep his fish in the water (I'm not trying to be a prick, just rescue his kit without fucking up the fish any more than they already are). He realises I'm going to untie his fish and starts to shout. I stand back with my hands in the air, and simply motion with a wave ("feel free then") to him to let them go himself.

He spends a minute or two pretty unceremoniously and roughly throwing the fish back.

Sorry old man, but if you took the time to get your fishing licence, then you can take the time to know where you can and can't dangle a line, just like the rest of us do. So Merry, because at least two of those fish may be okay, hopefully all three. Fuckwit is him for not to giving sufficient shits, and me fuckwit for spoiling his fun.

EDIT: No, before anyone asks this wasn't some family fun time with some father showing his kids how to fish by doing some catch and release shits and giggles. This was just an old guy going for broke.

How much could I make as a novice video editor? (freelancing)

Chinese people don't follow rules or laws in their own country, and don't get why they should in a foreign country either (I've lived in China for many years and see this kinda stuff every day).

The idea that you can't take free fish wouldn't compute at all for middle aged to older people, as their experience in growing up during famines and chaos says that you eat whatever you can get when you can get it. If you catch a few huge fish and can only eat one, no bother, at least you got it and no-one else did.

Did he speak mandarin back to you?

3
NotAWittyFuckerStirling•

Yep. The anglicisation spelling on his family name was the Mandarin derivative too.

1
CaptainBallzDuncraig•

Probably Cantonese lol

-1
meemeemeow•

Or the old dude wasn’t even of Chinese origin. He was probably wondering why this random guy was jibberjabbering and then started touching his tackle.

4
NotAWittyFuckerStirling•

He was. His phone language was set to Chinese, and in any case I knew he spoke Mandarin since I'd run into him before.

EDIT: I also want to make a joke about randomly touching tackle.

5
saucypudding•

White guys who know a little bit of Mandarin are some of the wankiest, most self-righteous guys you'll ever meet. This guy sounds like a nosy brat who has an Asian wife and thinks he's now some sort of Authority on Asians.

-10
NotAWittyFuckerStirling•

This occurred to me but if he was Cantonese, his name in pinyin would've been different to what it was.

2
Bueryou•

Maybe try the google translate app if you see him again.

1
NotAWittyFuckerStirling•

Really regret not having the phone on me. I have that app too (Handy for using with the in-laws).

My dog fell down the stairs last night (I turned the light off as he was going up and he stumbled, I thought he could see in the dark).

He was very anxious trying to get up the stairs this morning to sit in his usual bed next to my work desk.

But after ample encouragement he made it up!

13
Captain-Peacock•

I imagine it must have been like when Rocky Balboa climbed those stairs! Yo doggie!

(I turned the light off as he was going up and he stumbled, I thought he could see in the dark).

For the health and safety of your dog and family members, after it gets dark tonight, I'm going to say you should stare into your brightest light for a minute, then turn off everything and see how well you can see.

You know how your eyes take time to adjust?

Welcome to biology.

My new high pressure shower head. Only problem is it feels so good that I don't want to get out of the shower these cold mornings.

13
CaptainBallzDuncraig•

Got it on a hose?

1
antpodeanNorthbridge•

That would be even better, but unfortunately not. However it does have a massage setting which is both awesome and excruciating at the same time.

3
updabumnobebesPerth•

Two job interviews tomorrow.. wahoo.

12
chavvyheel•

Good luck!

2
updabumnobebesPerth•

Thank you but they’ve both been cancelled bc of the lockdown. 😓

8
chavvyheel•

Fingers crossed you get a reschedule soon.

2
sparrowsmooth•

Oh that sucks. I’m sure they’ll be rescheduled soon. X

Gots ma 1st vaccine today, Joondalup shopping centre. Was expecting to queue for hours in the cold rain, ended up walking straight in, sit for 5mins playing musical chairs, jabbed and out, with a sticker and a free apple juice.

Hope the lady near me with high blood pressure was ok though, they kept telling her to be calm :/

In my experience, blood pressure comes back down a few hours after the injection. Well it did for me anyway

things are plodding along fine here, another day, another dollar.

We also arent in a full lockdown per say

Jinxed it 😂

per se

4
Groovesaurus•

I'm home sick, but I'm using the time to watch comedy shows!

Unfortunately I picked Bo Burnham's and now I'm drenched in existential dread

8
metaospelling activist. burger snob.•

Try Tom Segura

5
lordkababResident Keanu•

Tim Secura is pretty funny, really enjoy his cadence and timing.

2
TheBoneDeath•

I wish I hadn't watched that Friday. A few more days buffer before our current situation would have been helpful.

3
Groovesaurus•

I watched it three times already.

1
Summerof5ft6andahalfNorth of The River•

It's fine, you just need to watch Make Happy, which sounds like a delightful romp of classic comedy setups!

Nothing that you... can't handle.

(I feel like I can't post this comment without being open for anyone who hasn't seen it that there is a song that references suicide. And by references I mean suggests. In making a larger point, of course.)

3
Groovesaurus•

Just watched that too, no worries. Now I'm super happy

3

My mum's finally getting vaccinated on Thursday.

6
Otherwise_WindowNorth of The River•

Passed through Subiaco and was pleased to see just about everyone wearing masks.

5
CouldDoWithaCoffee•

woo hoo! 2 weeks holiday!

4
MacWorkGuy•

Got my first covid jab today at Claremont at the end of the day. I arrived early and was in and out in absolutely no time and scored an orange juice and a sweet sticker for my troubles.

So far I'm 2 hours in and nothing exciting to report!

4
PositiveBubblesSouth of The River•

Floorboards are 80% installed, kitchen is done so I'll be moving into my house this week finally :)

4
Summerof5ft6andahalfNorth of The River•

My next few days just became less busy than expected, which is nice. I can sleep in a little longer and go to bed a little earlier (or at least have more leisure time before bed).

(My Saturday night/Sunday morning's a bit fucked instead but that's a later problem!)

2
Torispellingseyes•

I'm not working Tuesday!

1
VS2ute•

some bozo in the public dunny at shopping centre took off his mask at the urinal, I bet he can't walk and chew gum either

1
sparrowsmooth•

No work today. Work said no new bodies on site from today onwards (until Saturday). So I get to stay home & get assignments done.

1
Chelle_93•

I got a good coffee, it’s the small things sometimes 👌🏻
