What if Capture the Flag was a Hardcore Battle Royale Mode? [Game Mode Idea]
Here's my take on a CTF mode for BR. It'd be a "hardcore" mode, trying to force fights and vary the gameplay throughout the match.
Objective: Capture the Flags
Three flags are placed across the map. Teams race to capture these flags and hold onto them. Collecting all three flags or being the last squad standing are the win conditions. While holding a flag makes a team a beacon, it also heals them for a substantial amount (50hp, 50 shields?) upon the elimination of an enemy to help them fight off the oncoming waves of foes.
The intention is to create pockets of activity and combat right off the drop, and giving advantage to teams that can win sustained fights, without making said team too powerful. Teams also accumulate points while holding the flag. While you could win by ratting until the end and merc-ing the final teams before anyone can collect all three flags, you'd be at a serious points deficit to anyone who held one or more flags since the start of the game.
- Round 1, the Ring does not close until x number of players are eliminated.
- Round 2, the ring closes somewhere that was not a flag spawn
- Round 3, Always Be Closing
The whole mode is intended to force engagements and reward sustained fighters. While you could camp with a flag, you are rewarded for doing just the opposite. The change in ring rules help to keep players on their toes, and also to again push towards more fights and engagements. In most other ways, it would remain normal BR in terms of loot spawning, crafting, etc.
Gameplay breakdown:
Teams launch from the dropship as normal, and formulate a plan to take one of the three flags on the map. Three squads grab their respective flags, and begin defending themselves. One chooses to run, and hopes to race across the map to the second flag carriers to win their third party, if they can make it past all the other squads trying to kill them. The second squad bunkers down with Rampart, Loba and Wattson, and are ready to take on anyone who comes their way. The third team got landed on, died and now their killers are being third, no fourth partied. The first squad should have headed this way instead.
The horns blare, and the map shows the Ring, finally. Teams race to find a position. There's only 10 left now. 9. They can see the Flags converging on different parts of the circle. Team two has red armor and Shiela is all set up with a Pylon set down and another on the way. This is going to get messy.
Scoring
- Victory (all flags, last squad standing) - A large sum of points for ending the game. Balanced in such a way that it will normally be bigger than any teams Time Holding Flag score.
- time holding flag(s) - a ticking point count for time holding the flag. Tick doubled when holding two flags
- Eliminations - Used like kills/assists for current ranked points. Might need multiplier adjustments to account for Flag Time. Some reward for teams who can't get a flag for staying in the game. Counts for the whole team's kills.
- Placement - Order eliminated. Used as multiplier for Eliminations.
