How do other parents keep their relationship alive?

NSFWRant/Vent

In between full time jobs, child care troubles, housework, and trying to sneak in 30 min a day for ourselves, our marriage has died. I don’t think he cares. With what little energy I had left, I took a nice hot bath and wore something nice. He comes to bed 2 hours later and doesn’t even look at me, just plops over and turns his back to me... It’s not like I have infinite energy to make more and more efforts. That was it. That was my best. I didn’t interrupt his shows, I waited patiently so he could get his hobbies in. Every single night is a missed opportunity. I could have sex every night if I had a willing partner. This is not me. I’m a shell of myself now. Just an undesirable mother with a flabby belly. Not even my own husband is interested.

There are so many factors that could be leading to this on his end. My wife and I went through something similar, but with time the groove returns. Being a new parent is hard - really hard. None of us can speak for his lack of desire or libido, but break the cycle - make him pay attention to you. Do you have a way to get away for a night? Can grandparents watch the baby and allow you both the chance for a night out and a bottle of wine? All just suggestions from a husband/father of a 2 y/o.

You’re interrupting my pity party with that useful advice. I’m having a hard time trying to do anything because every time I put myself out there I get my feelings hurt. Sex is just not even top 10 on his list of priorities. He’s a wonderul dad and husband even with all this but I’m a different person without a sex life. I’m becoming a bitter person. I want to be having fun sex and cuddling. That’s why I worked so hard to build good sleep habits for my baby, so I could still have a sex life. Sorry for the ramble.

KatCLed•

So something I have learned over time with my husband, sex is not near the priority level for him as it is for me. He is also hella bad at picking up signals. We have had a couple really deep convos about what that means our sex life needs to look like. I conceded to be more blunt with my needs. I dont wait for him to notice me looking sexy. I point blank tell him that I am in the mood and want attention. Its not always as fun as being lusted after, but it keeps me satisfied and emotionally happy. Plus the sex is 10/10. I would just say TALK to him about your needs and how this is making you feel. He isn't a mind reader. Or he is asexual and you two need to have a totally different conversation.

89
br4inst0rmer•

Really accurate. Indeed just talk with him. There might be a 1000 things going through his head. Maybe he is afraid of doing damage, i know i was. Maybe he is overwhelmed by everything going on, a baby changes a lot, i was incredibly overwhelmed. So the first period i was just too scared and worried and that resulted in not really wanting to do anything. We might not seem very sophisticated but some men truly have some depth ;-) . To be honest im still a little bit scared cause what if i make a wrong move and something ruptures or something.

Dont assume things, dont jump to conclusions and just talk to him. And more important listen and dont judge. It might go back to how it was before or be even better than before, sooner than you think.

Can confirm that nuance is something that at the end of the day I as a dad really lack, but a direct statement of desire is rarely met with anything other than “oh I didn’t know what was an option!” I think it’s easy to get caught in the loop of assuming your partner is too tired or too mentally drained to want physical intimacy, and therefore not let them know directly (not just hints) that you want them.

This cuts both ways too: I know many husbands who don’t initiate because of long periods of stress and sleep deprivation, and then end up assuming their partner isn’t interested, when really it’s the opposite case.

Are you putting yourself out there verbally? Like telling him all this? As awfully unromantic as it sounds, it might be time to schedule sex in your calendars. And if he's not agreeable, I'd use those two hours after the bath with a whole bed to myself to masterbate wildly.

Parenting is hard. Guys can be dense and not get signals. You might want to have a light discussion bringing up the fact that you would like to have some adult time with him in the near future, so he is aware... And then just make an obvious invitation when the time suites you.

7
[deleted]•

Is he perceiving you waiting on him, like giving him all that time for hobbies etc, as a lack of interest from you? I hate to say it so bluntly, but sometimes you gotta interrupt what they are doing with head, or literally climbing on too of them naked, or something similar.

Also, have you tried telling him he needs to make an effort too? Sometimes they stop trying when they think it's all no all the time.

I went through a frustrating year or so with my husband and sex. We are finally in a good groove again and happy.

63
ChimpmunksallyOP•

But my ego is hurt. How do I initiate sex if I feel like he’s not interested in me because he never initiates or even just comes to bed at a reasonable enough hour for anything to happen? How did you get out of that funk?? He knows all about how I want sex. He just doesn’t care I think.. last time I sent him a text joking to come up for sex but I was goofing around, he was “relieved” that he could continue watching his shows.

11
[deleted]•

I understand that hurts. It sounds like he does not understand. I'm not sure how to make him understand that sex is important to you.

Is sex only ever in the bedroom? Can you go to where he is and fuck his brains out there? Maybe the "relieved" feeling comes from a lack of excitement and things feeling too routine for too long, so it feeling like a chore instead of something he fun and exciting.

29
[deleted]•

Well I'm in a similar sit just from the other side, but I can assure that one of the most hurtful things is when my spouse "jokingly tricks" me about having sex when we have it like once a month. Eventually this lack of intimacy made me start to ignore sexual relationship part at all cz it's less stressfull than being rejected all the time and I honesly hate when she starts making jokes about sex. The only thing I can recommend is to talk to your partner, it's definitely not the looks

Communication. Don't assume he or you can read minds. Just tell him. He also may be tired/stressed/sick

I’m not saying this is your situation, it’s just another perspective…. I have spent years trying to woo my wife and maintain any kind of consistent physical relationship, and I mean anything… holding hands, back scratching, and up to and including sex. After so long I have given up hope. If my wife were to come to bed in something sexy I would likely do what your husband did as well because I have been conditioned by her established history of avoiding all things physical. I wouldn’t believe that was even possible, that she had a night of romance on her mind.

Just so that you hold yourself accountable… is there any chance something like this has happened for y’all? Has sex or dressing up or whatever become so infrequent that it doesn’t seem a likely candidate? I’m not saying he’s blameless, please don’t get that. I’m hoping you can take an honest look and if the blame falls squarely on him, so be it, there needs to be certain steps taken to get things back on track. However, if there’s a part you have played in the scenario then you are responsible to help fix it as well.

9
Tobar26th•

Honestly I get that. My wife’s libido is lower than mine. That’s a result of medication and chronic pain so I totally get where you’re at here.

My wife tells me she wants to want sex but physically doesn’t.

You know what? It hurts. It puts me off initiating and I played a game once of seeing how long it would take her to initiate. I don’t want to give you the answer as to how long that took.

The point is I cope with it as I know why she doesn’t want sex.

You don’t yet. Talk to him.

9
Ianyat•

Nothing's going to change if you don't change it. You say he knows, but you are sending him text messages from within the same house? Go to talk to the guy face to face. You want cuddles time? Go and sit with him while he watches his shows. Initiate as soon as the baby is asleep. Tell him you've got something more fun in mind than tv. Be more direct.

If you've tried this then there is something bigger going on. Nobody on the internet knows anything about your relationship. Maybe your dude is depressed, maybe he's got some sort of midlife crisis. Maybe he thinks you don't care enough to ask why he seems to not want to be intimate?

3
wannabebutta•

I can say, speaking from experience, that it isn't you. It's a mix of a thousand different experiences swirling around in his head and body. The best thing to do is be open with him in a non-shaming way knowing that he will still probably feel shame. I've been in your shoes, and I've been in his. Neither of those situations were easy. But both of those situations would have been made easier by open and compassionate communication by both parties.

That's actually the hardest part that most people in relationships don't realize. The things that go unsaid. The avoidance of talking about challenging things. Talk to him. Reach out to others for how to go about that conversation first. And speak from your heart. If he doesn't hear you, that's on him. But if you don't use your voice to begin with, that's on you.

You got this. Use your voice but also use your ears. He doesn't want anything between you to suck either.

Sounds like you guys need to re-connect on a normal level of intimacy before pushing sex.

What are your love languages?

Schedule some time for you both to just talk, clear the air, tell him that you miss him, have dinner together, hold hands, send him a cheeky text.

When our little (she's 7mo) goes to bed we have a wind down hour then we will check-in with each other and cuddle up or something. I'll text him even if he's just in the other room.

Start small, as both of you seem to have low energy reserves. It may be you both need to see a doctor to make sure you're not deficient in anything and look into treatment for depression.

39
GingerGangster•

Sorry but you didn't initiate sex - you initiated an attempt at subtly manipulating your husband into propositioning you for sex. In my experience I would have either missed the hint or not been confident to make the advance based on prior rejections. The pattern was if my wife didn't initiate sex she would joke and not take my attempts to initiate sex seriously. It took clearly letting my wife know that she is the gatekeeper of sex and I am willing but no longer willing to be play games and be rejected so if she wants sex she needs to stop being subtle and passive and actually make a move.

39
ChimpmunksallyOP•

Sory for your troubls but you’re projecting I think: my husband knows Im up for sex anytime. He calls me a freak. He knows he can get it any time. In 4 years, I’ve only rejected it twice.

-7†
Exact_Fill_5731•

You took a bath and put something on nice, both things are stuff you did for yourself. Did you give him a hug? Did you physically express any interest? Did you say anything to him?

You need to be direct with your wants and needs. You are both exhausted and mentally drained. No need to play mind games. Just tell him what you want and when.

36
ChimpmunksallyOP•

Wow that hit home. I don’t want to touch him actually now that I think about it. I want him to come to me if that makes sense. Like I need to be wanted more than I need sex...

2
Infinite_Love_23•

Still, you're filling in what your husband thinks and why he acts. You expect him to initiate sex while he might not be in the mood, have you talked to him about your feelings and wants? Have you tried to understand why or at least check that what you think or feel he's thinking is true? It doesn't seem like you're really communicating from your post, is this true? What reasons does he have for not initiating sex?

I feel for your situation, a dead bed room can be a killer for your self confidence, but throwing yourself a pity party is only an excuse to avoid confronting the problems head on.

18

Could he be depressed? Postpartum depression also happens to men.

29

Fatigue can really impact a person's libido, and this can cause a problem when one spouse takes a harder hit if exhaustion.

Like you could be twice as exhausted compared to your husband, but the exhaustion he feels could kill his libido while yours is just slightly impacted, you know?

Try scheduling it, or just giving him a heads up, "hey, how about this weekend?"

28
Machiknight•

Just straight up tell him when you want it. Us guys don’t do hints well. Also, have a candid conversation about your needs. Like, really blunt.

21
DocThrowaway2000•

Wait, there are wives out there that initiate sex?

I’m kidding (kinda). I know you’re already tired of hinting, but maybe start that process early before everyone gets tired. Grab his ass or parts when he walks by. Massage shoulders. That way he knows what to expect when the kids go to bed.

As someone mentioned, he could also be a little depressed. You may not want to hear this, but he maybe he didn’t think sex was going to happen that day and took care of himself earlier and had nothing left in the tank.. not saying it’s right, just putting it out there. That’s why I mention get the flirting started early.

Our kids are on top of us 24/7. They wake up early, they go to bed with us. They know how to unlock locks. It’s like a 007 mission when we do get intimate. Behind two closed/locked doors, sometimes (ok most of the time) in the bathroom. I can’t wait to start having normal people sex again.

12
MinervaBlade89•

Others have said it so I’ll keep it short before my suggestion. Aging, fatigue, lack of exercise/sleep/crap diet that all comes w parenting can really kill a guy’s sex drive or ability to perform. He could have performance doubts if he’s not in the mood which men don’t like to experience.

You’ll have move past the luxury women enjoy for so much of their lives of being lusted after simply by putting on a dress.

Get him to go to bed early. Start with some rubbing, cuddling. Tell him “no pressure, im just toying around. we don’t have to do anything “—and mean it. He may need time to adjust. Massage the package, do your thing. As some said, you could even just go oral which will likely get things going. If that doesn’t work, he may be JOing to porn too much or something.

My marriage improved when I started improving myself. My wife and I grew apart when our kids were very young. We started to become resentful towards each other and lost our intimacy since our relationship became only about the kids’ wellbeing. We became resentful for different reasons, each valid.

I quit drinking and started improving myself since happiness is not something that someone else can give you or can find from a substance or thing.

The books that helped me and in turn my relationship are The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, Atomic Habits, The Whole Brain Child, Breaking The Habit of Being Yourself, The Mind Illuminated, The Untethered Soul, How To Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, and about 20 more (no exaggeration).

You need to change/educate yourself first and then you’ll have the tools to work on your marriage. You don’t need to solve every issue but your attitude and understanding toward each other can help you transcend those issues.

Relationships take work. Beware the Four Horseman! Good luck!

I would recommend being completely honest about your feelings and needs, but in a way that isn't accusatory. Reading about Nonviolent Communication helped me a lot with this. Also, laughter is a terrific medicine. Are there ways you can have fun together? My husband and I like to smoke pot and watch sketch comedy after the kids go to sleep. It's not for everyone, but it is a way for us to feel a little naughty together and laugh til we cry on a regular basis. Lean into the things you have in common.

What worked for us was brunch and a quickie while the kids were in Sunday school, sorry if that seems disrespectful. It's been the only time in the last 6 years we were alone in our house long enough to do anything. And that's what we needed, alone in the house and not working. But that's because one of ours doesn't sleep. Maybe try both talking and trying to remove various obstacles, see what helps, maybe if it's just a conversation and not a fight he might have some ideas too?

5
LipglossGirI•

It sounds like you should have a nice and long talk about where you're both standing. In the last ten years of being with my hubby, we have learned to regularly sit down and see if we're both content and if not (in case one party has developed some changed needs or desires) to adjust to these and find some common ground. It's something we keep doing in order to keep the relationship running. We just had our firstborn two years ago and number two is about to come out any moment now. With kids, there's just less time to talk, but it's very important to take the time for this.
I believe it's definitely not too late. It's not super romantic to talk about these things, but very necessary in my opinion.

I don’t have any advice on how to resolve the issue but I want to offer my solidarity. I’m currently going on four years of a dead bedroom and it sucks. We tried couples therapy and things kinda got better for a bit but as soon as we stopped he lost interest again. It falls 100% on me to initiate and it honestly makes me feel horrendously ugly and undesirable and like a total creep that I have to beg for sex. I did what other commenters have said on here: I put in the effort, I tried to initiate and be blunt and obvious, I tried scheduling time, I’ve tried doing date nights, I’ve tried talking with him about it. Nothing works. It’s exhausting to put yourself out there and be shot down every single time. At this point I’ve just walled that part of me off, I haven’t tried initiating anything in months. We’ve reached the point where if I am successful I just feel worse afterwards because it feels like I coerced him into it rather than him wanting to. I’m working through all of this with my own therapist, but god it hurts so bad.

My only suggestion is maybe try couples therapy and date nights (even if you just stay in, make time to be together deliberately). I would definitely advise intervening now before you reach the point I’m at.

Thanks for the solidarity. I got a lot of suggestions here that I will try but honestly I feel I’m just opening myself up for more hurt.

I was the husband running low on sex drive after two kids, high stress job, etc. The answer was biological for me, not emotional or intellectual. My testosterone tanked, for a variety of reasons I suspect, but science outright has confirmed fatherhood all by itself will drop testosterone:

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2011/09/fatherhood-decreases-testosterone

With low T comes low sex drive, like a legit “I’m not even remotely interested in sex”. I didn’t want to “take care of myself” even, it just wasn’t a thing for me.

I decided that sucked, I was a very sexual person, and this drop was completely unacceptable. So I did the research, got on low dose TRT, and voila. Three times a week is considered a lull in our sex life now.

It isn’t for everyone, and it takes commitment, but I think there is just value in understanding his testosterone has probably bottomed out for many reasons completely unrelated to you and without strong T, sex won’t be a top 10 priority for a guy.

5
Capnjack84•

I’m on the opposite end of spectrum. I don’t really know how to feel either. I would be so much happier if my wife made that kind of effort. The brief description would say something is not feeling right with him. Maybe he needs some help coping with his new role in life/family. Hard to tell but talking about it can unveil a lot. Good luck.
