Buying a more understable 13 speed can make your drives longer.

If you can’t throw a thunderbird, a very light shryke may still be your max distance disc.

Seriously, I got a Star Thunderbird a few months ago and it is stupidly overstable, flies more like a Firebird.

Because of that, I can get probably 150-200 more feet out of my Shryke than I can my Thunderbird at the moment.

I'm not terribly great at disc golf and this guy told me that my thunderbird was the best disc in my bag for my level.

I can't throw that fucker straight for anything. It just goes left after like 50ft. I can throw a nuke, shryke, and katana the length of a baseball field no problem.

My star thunder must be overstable asf and I must suck haha.

I'm not saying you suck but I will say you should be able to throw putters the length of a baseball field. Scale back on the faster discs and hit the field and start to analyze your form. I bet you will find leaks that you can address. If you can throw a putter 200-250+ feet than grab that Nuke

You're not a real disc golfer unless you can throw your putter over the green monster from home plate.

Thanks for the rec! I did do that when I initially started and I can throw putters that far. The only one I can't throw that far is the Thunderbird 🙃

(I have been able to throw the Tbird the length of the field like 5% of the time but never consistent enough that I feel comfortable using it unless I need to get it around a sharp corner. If my hand is anything but as flat as a plane, it just hyzers)

I have been putting a lot of thought on form though! I've only been recently able to get the discs that far by watching tons of videos/tournaments/practicing. If you have any tips I'd love to hear them 'cause I'm trying to absorb as much as possible.

Thunderbirds are tough at first, but such a great disc to have. They beat in really nice overtime. Might isn't flippy, just less overstable.

Yup, my star thunderbird is basically identical to my sexton firebird, quite overstable. Not at all the disc I wanted it to be

ATDoel•

It’s a star, smack it against some trees and it’ll loosen up nicely

Funny you say this, Iv been throwing a shryke and decided to give a thunderbird a shot since it’s a lower speed. I feel like on decent throws they land similar but if I mess up my throw even a little bit that thunderbird takes a steep dive

Sure, but it’s not simply because 13 > 9, it’s also because of the stability difference. The joke is just that people sometimes think that speed = distance, but it’s really just the speed at which the disc properly exhibits its intended behavior. Throwing a higher speed disc (all other stats equal) doesn’t just automatically add distance to your throw if you can’t put more power into it.

For sure, the advice should be to use the right tool for the job like you’re suggesting.

Why not make that a pretty understable 9 speed? Nobody is throwing a nuke os for max distance throws, even if they have the arm for a 13 speed.

TechnologyOk3770•

In general the faster the disc with the same arm speed and stability, the further it will go. The notion that slower discs go further for some people is entirely fictional. Throw the fastest disc you can get a full flight out of.

This is 100% not true.

Throw a judge 40 mph and nose up, and then do the same thing with a ballista Pro and tell me which one goes further.

I can throw a roach further than I can throw a flat champ firebird. Am I broken?

Edit, 100% untrue unless you are getting that faster disc up to speed. You also said same stability, when the original comparison was a pretty overstable 9 speed with a flippy 13.

My second example was bad.

40 mph is 64.37 km/h

I mean stability at the speed the disc is being thrown, not the number written on the disc.

A neutral driver thrown slowly acts overstable. An understable driver thrown slowly acts neutral.

The diamond, for example, is flippy enough that it will hold straight at very low speeds. Everyone can throw a diamond further than a judge, because faster discs go farther when they fly a neutral line.

All of these "stay away from distance drivers" posts are really bordering on Gatekeeping.

If people like throwing Destroyers 250 feet and feel like they get consistent results, just let them.

250 feet is the length of like 344.83 'Zulay Premium Quality Metal Lemon Squeezers' layed next to each other

That’s not what this is meant to say at all, it’s just trying to remind people that the number doesn’t magically mean that the disc goes further. You still have to throw it harder to get it to travel more. Several people in my group will continually pull out high speed discs and then barely throw them further than a Putter. The misconception is that they need a big disc to get it further, but really they need to work on form to get more power (with whatever disc they choose).

TL;DR Use whatever disc makes you happy, but don’t pretend that a 13 will just automatically add 100ft to your drive.

I know, I didn’t see it until it was posted and had comments 🤦‍♂️

I buy drivers for the ground play. At least this is what I tell myself.

While I'm not advocating beginners use high-speed drivers, with my terrible form I can consistently throw a Hades a good bit further than my 9 - 10 speeds. I throw a putter about 240'. Buzzzes about 270' to 280' (can hit 300' on a fluke every once in awhile... usually when there is OB 295' from the tee). My 9 and 10 speeds aren't totally consistent, but 290' to 310' (think Undertaker and Vulture)... sometimes longer, but not dependably. With the Hades, 325' is pretty easy and 350 isn't surprising. I'll sometimes push it out to 370' to 380' on actual holes when my form accidentally comes together.
