MORE NEW DAYTON SUBWOOFERS LETS GOOOOO

  • The "high end?" reference series, these are all 3" voice coils I believe

These all have strong motor force and good inductance values

15" 27mm xmax $300 https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-RSS390HE-22-15-Reference-Series-High-Excursion-Subwoofer-22-ohm-295-292

12" 25mm xmax $250 https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-RSS315HE-22-12-Reference-Series-High-Excursion-Subwoofer-22-ohm-295-291

10" 25mm xmax $220

https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-RSS265HE-22-10-Reference-Series-High-Excursion-Subwoofer-22-ohm-295-290

  • Budget (but still extreme) subwoofers (much higher inductance than the above subwoofers and a 2.5" voice coil)

15" 24mm xmax? $200 (different values cited everywhere, but the q&a says 24mm)

https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-MX15-22-15-Max-X-High-Excursion-DVC-Subwoofer-2-Ohms-Per-Coil-295-168

12" 18.8mm xmax $150

https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-MX12-22-12-Max-X-High-Excursion-DVC-Subwoofer-2-Ohms-Per-Coil-295-166

10" 13.7mm xmax $120

https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-MX10-22-10-Max-X-High-Excursion-DVC-Subwoofer-2-Ohms-Per-Coil-295-164

These subs look sick, I'm probably going to end up ordering 2-4 of the MX15s. For car audio I'm definitely going to be recommending the Reference series 12" and 10". That's a lot of xmax.

Makes me regret buying a um12 recently, but then I remember it'll probably take a year before they're available in my country so it's not so bad

2
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

the um12 has 1/2 or 1/4 the inductance that these drivers have

2
[deleted]•

2.2 is still good, inductance isn't as important in subwoofers as midrange drivers anyway

1
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

it's still nice, it means you could use it for a boombox setup to cover frequencies all the way to 200

1
[deleted]•

Luckily no one will be doing that with these subwoofers lol

Are these new introduced subwoofer drivers?

2
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

I mean, is the title not clear lol. The MX series were announced a month or too ago. The Reference HE series are so new I haven't even found a press release for them

3
hidjedewitjeEE•

I mean that part was clear. However dayton already had a high output (HO) and high fidelity (HF) line of drivers.

It would be strange to also make a high excursion line as that would be very similar to high output.

The drivers do look neat though. Would love to see non-linear distortion figures and dynamic T/S parameter measurements though.

1
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

they have double the excursion of the "high output" lineup, I've always thought the HO lineup was horrendously overpriced and their naming scheme for subwoofers is pretty unintuitive (except for this line)

Damn near $400 for 13mm of excursion? Absolute rip off in my opinion

1
hidjedewitjeEE•

Well excursion isnt everything.

They dont specify the dynamic ts parameters (which cause nonlinear distortion). Besides, such large woofers don't need much excursion.

I love it. I'm super torn between doing what I've done for decades and build my own subs (well, not the drivers lol) versus buying a premade Rythmik servo sub (or a kit from them). Having never heard a servo in person I'm not sure if it lives up to the hype, but there might be no other way to achieve the accuracy that they claim.

In my opinion the benefits of servo subwoofers aren't really a benefit I care about, having a little bit of character (distortion) from your subwoofer can sound good. Subwoofers in my opinion sound their best when pushed to the absolute max.

1
subwoofage•

A distortion pedal makes a guitar sound good, too :)

To each their own! (But I do want to hear a servo sub in person and the only way might be to buy one myself...)

2
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

Ive heard the Yamaha servo subwoofers, not anything to write home about imo. I'm very happy with my lmsr 15s on 2kw each.

They are cool, however the first three mentioned cost almost the same then the Ultimax series, which response is way flatter and most of them can play down to 20hz

1
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

The ultimax series also has some very weak motors compared to these. The um15 motor is 40% weaker than the MX15 motor, the Reference HE 15 has an even larger advantage.

Not sure what you're talking about when you say "most of them can play down to 20hz". All of the subwoofers pretty much any manufacture makes above 8 inches can play down to 20hz when put in an appropriate box.

3
ssl-3•

And with enough Xmax and thermal capability (both of which are plentiful here),an appropriately-big amp, and a sealed box (or a ported box with an adequately low Fb), then we can take a page from the commercial subwoofer manufacturer's playbook and use EQ to fix the rest.

I mean: It's nice and all to have natural ruler-flat response to 20Hz, but we don't necessarily need that these days.

5
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

even then, you really don't need to eq a box if it's playing indoors (except to fix room modes and nulls) since you get a huge low bass boost from placing a subwoofer against a wall or corner

2
ssl-3•

That's a thing that can help, but it isn't a sure thing:

It helps in the case where room interactions provide the right boost in the right places, and don't add any detrimental effects.

Some rooms sound very, very different from other rooms.

2
LimpCroissant•

Hmm veryy cool. Both look very promising for their own areas of expertise.

1
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

I'm just really happy about the price point, 200 bucks for a 15" driver with 24mm of xmax while still having reasonable motor force is just awesome,

they also didn't go too crazy, if they tried to reach 30mm xmax then they would've had to add another stack of magnets, lengthen the coil, probably reduce efficiency, most certainly increase cost.

And for what, 1.5db? (which to reach that you would have to push insane amounts of power which would increase power compression, increase cooling requirements (more cost), increase amp requirements, etc)

2
LimpCroissant•

I feel ya. I think the industry pushes that you need tons of power too much now days. I prefer more efficient lower power subs. I also run them in a small 4 door 03 chevy tracker though so it really doesn't take much power to get a lot of bass with the cabin gain. At the moment I have a JL 13TW5 running in a large vented box on 250w rms and when placed right it's way too loud for normal listening unless I want to show off. I usually keep my subwoofer level somewhere between +5 to -8 (on a scale of -10 through +10), and thats coming from a guy that really likes bass.

Oh yeah? Show me a post advertising the new reference high excursion series. They're so new it's not even on daytons own website https://www.daytonaudio.com/category/121/subwoofers?pagenum=2

The MAX-X series has been out for 2 months but that's still very new in terms of speakers.

5
DanGTG•

The parameters are pretty lame, they traded everything for that xmax.

-2†
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

like what parameters got sacrificed for what driver

2
[deleted]•

They look good to me 🤷‍♀️

3
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

yeah they have very comparable specs to my 10 year old lmsr 15s that originally cost $500 each and also comparable specs to stereo integrity SQL-15s at $440 a driver.

2
DanGTG•

It is a lot like the LMS-R 15, something I bought and sent back a couple of days later due to it measuring a bit weaker than the spec. I think I was told the motor was not sufficiently charged.

1
KGO87•

comparable specs ok. They’re nowhere near as quality as either of the subs you mentioned for sure

1
DanGTG•

The ones that make them fat and inefficient, compliance is still in a reasonable range though.

-3
MainStreamingOP/r/diysound•

Inefficient? Compared to what?
