Looking at that view right now under the full moon. Snows not fantastic at the moment, tuesday should be much better, especially upper mtn / Saddle

Snow was ok, could be a bigger base. But it was holding well up top, we had 5cm over night on one occasion and it was mint. Apparently 20cm due tonight, but I’ll believe that when I see it. They’ve done a great job with what they’ve got

Amazing photos. I spent many summers in the late 80s and early 90s camping by the Mototapu river, almost exactly in the centre right of the Wanaka photo below the hills. Where that road crosses the river, we would camp just downstream of the bridge. It's a beautiful place.

That campsite looks amazing. How was the lake during summer… Warm enough to swim?

Yes Lake Wanaka is swimmable but is still chilly, not as bad as Tekapo though. The river was even better. Back then it had good swimming holes, and was waist deep in the middle. It was river shingle and bedrock on the bottom and had good flow so the water was pristine. Lots of trout in the river to. Just off to the right of that photo the river cuts a gorge through the rock, it was an amazing place to go upstream a few K's and float down on a Lilo back to the camp.

I've not been back for 15 years, but even then it had changed a lot. Floods deposited a lot of gravel and made it shallower and wider, and totally changed the riverside where we used to camp.

I've skied Verbier, Grand Montets, and a few other places, but ripping down Matukituki bowl, over a braided river and Lake Wanaka on a huge powder day was honestly as good as any of them.

Yeah - this and Sarah Sue over at Coronet. Also over the back ridge at Ohau looking down on the beech forest is pretty amazing.

Yea true. Ohau is on my list for next year. Is it good for advanced skiers/boarders?

Ohau has some nice terrain - It has a ridge hike that you can do if you go up from the top of the lift, and that gives access to some side runs that fan in to the main bowl. There's also a back bowl that's legendary, though you need some equipment to be safer in there. Given the right conditions that back bowl will give the same experience as a heli-run.
