To the sea, once more

After his last tears had dried

and finally grief had settled,

I decided we should visit the ocean

for one last time.

So I drove our car,

soon to be just mine,

toward the open sea.

Though our seconds each moment waned,

we travelled in punishing silence.

I imagined he spoke to me

of past times

when we might travel to the sea

as escape from our perfect normality.

I imagined we travelled in bliss and love and

sang awfully together. But we didn’t.

We travelled cocooned in grief,

tinged by a silence known by few.

What was the living to say to the dying?

And in this silence we passed

from the comfort of land to the world’s edge,

where I watched the distant birds

lining the waves; the erratic, soft current-

in perfect harmony with everything,

yet nothing.

And the unknown artist’s masterpiece,

named- pebbles and shells.

Innocent beauty yet to be caressed

by man’s dry, perverted hands.

But he did not see. Instead he stared

transfixed on the moving blue

inverted sky. The ocean

stretched before him, as to me,

but from his eyes its beauty was hidden.

Where I saw a canvas of endless

untouched possibility,

he saw the defining point of life.

To him, the ocean was final;

the resounding finite point-

reminder of end.

Though I may one day return,

to soak in the sea’s peace once more,

he will not.

While the breeze entices me and hopes

to ensure my swift return, to my love

it whispers one final goodbye.

This poem made me sad, and that is good. I have not lived near the ocean most of my life, but recently, that has changed. There is something primordial about the ocean; it seems as a bringer of both life and death. Death is the undercurrent of this poem. There are two distinct worlds the poem deals with: that of the living and that of the dying. I could feel the clash of these two worlds when the poem shifted to the raw beauty of the ocean, and how the dying man saw something completely different. The living saw expansive opportunity while the dying saw immense finality. The ocean marks the abrupt and powerful end of the land where humanity lives. Moreover, the ocean has been a source of adventure and growth for humanity perennial. This duality is captured beautifully, and it serves as an engine to express the experiences of the narrator.
