No matter what happens for the rest of the season, remember that this is only a game.

Your mental and emotional health take precedent over the Red Sox. You have no control over the outcome of the game, so why worry about it? If you’re not enjoying the games, take a break. Don’t have a mental breakdown because your preferred group of millionaires lost a kids game.

The Red Sox are a family tradition for most people. Lots of us watch these games to remember the time's we spent with those who are no longer here. Its more than a game to a lot of us.

Of course, but none of that value is tied to the team’s successes or failures.

Love this comment so much. Red Sox fans made great memories for 86 years between championships, I think all of us can still find some value in the family tradition of rooting for the team regardless of success.

Are you visiting from r/Stoic? Not that I disagree with you.

of course it is 100%, my mother lay dying in a hospital bed in our home , yet we as a family got to watch every game with her to see the 2013 championship . She had a cardboard cutout of big papi, she had this thing where she called him Big Pappy instead of papi. i still have the little stuffed wally she kept with her, he is sitting in a homemade rocking chair made out of clothespins my wifes grandfather made 2 days before he passed away.

The winning seasons like that spawned the greatest of memories. and when the red sox won each time since then all i can do is think of her and smile at how much she enjoyed the damn games, and how much we enjoyed seeing her smile , even though the pain from cancer was terrifyingly high. Or how after basically not eating and wasting away for days at a time, would become super animated and yell "yankees suck" or Go Pappy! at the perfect moment during a game.

The value of memories is directly proportional to the outcomes of the games or seasons.

She passed 3 days after the red sox won the world series.

I will NEVER forget that season.

Oh fuck. My dad and I have always bonded over the Sox and baseball as a whole. Makes tonight’s loss a bit more bitter

1
jlm994•

I mean you can bond about the loss as well right?

I like the way you think

gmanlee95•

My dad's been a lifetime red sox fan, bonding over losses is more tradition than wins for him lol

It’s so true. I think as people have said it’s more than a game to a lot of us. For me, and for you too, I’m sure. But you’re right. When it stops being fun, take a break. When watching and following a team so intently is negatively affecting your entail health, I don’t think easing up on watching makes you a “fair weather fan” or anything of that nature. It’s just self care. I think if the negative outcomes are making you upset beyond your love for the team, it can be helpful to pull back some. Of course, if you follow and watch every game, losses are going to upset you. But if they start affecting your life away from baseball, that’s a lot. For example, i was at the game last night. And i had a great night. The weather was beautiful, i was with some friends, we had great seats, and i got to watch my favorite team play my favorite game. Obviously, the result was terrible. But at the end of the game, i didn’t even really care. Of course, i was upset that we lost, but i didn’t really think about it much, and haven’t since. I realized on the train ride home that had I watched that game in my room alone, like i do most games, i probably would have been CRUSHED. Obviously, that was a huge loss for us, to the fucking Yankees nonetheless. But even still, i was not only able to not be bothered by it, but to enjoy the game. That was kind of eye opening for me in a way. It’s tough, but i think as devoted fans it’s important that we find ways to keep ourselves in a state where we can still love and enjoy our game and our team, even when things are this bleak.

Amen my guy.

A game where this team has already practically matched their preseason win totals predicitoons.

I get we're all dummies doing emotional gsmbling; being upset after a rough stretch is totally fair. But turning on the team and/or making character accusations is insane.

And remember that the players and managers are only human, are doing their best, and don’t deserve hate or harassment.

Disappointment and stress make the whole thing worth it if they win.

Saying “it’s only a game” and calling baseball “a kids game” dude are you even a fan of any sport with an attitude like that towards them

the idea of escape through entertainment has been around as long as mankind has. To say, dont pay attention to it now, is the height of silliness.
