UAP-AC-PRO running at 98% CPU after 8+ days of activity

Question

Has anyone else found their UAP-AC-PRO running at high CPU usage after a number of days? THis appears to only have started happening after the 2nd last or firmware upgrades to those AP's.

I have two AP that service around 70-80 clients, majority are 2.4g and usually a 70/30% split between the two AP's (but can't seem to get an even split). The higher client unit, over time, will climb to max CPU usage and sit at 98%+ until restarted.

Running latest controller ( atag_6.2.26_15319) and firmware (4.3.28.11361) for those units. Any suggestions on how to check what is going wrong with the units.

Running a USG-Pro-4 + US-48-G1 & US-16-150W, at latest firmwares.

IMHO, any firmware after 4.3.24.11355 has too many issues to use. Try rolling back to an earlier version and see if the issue persists.

Agreed.

My APs ramped up so high CPU that devices could associate with the AP, but it wouldn't ever pull DHCP.

Rebooted, eventually the issue repeated - so I rolled back. No resolved the issues.

What firmware version are you running at? 4.3.24?

2
TheDarthSnarf🛡️🖧 📡•

Yes - 4.3.24.11355

RumbaarOP•

Thx, I'm trying downgrade to that firmware.

4.3.28.11361 with 3x UAP-AC-PRO's and no issues. Uptime showing 89 days.

Do you have a reconmendation for a more stable version? But yes, I try and no upgrade as they come out. Hoping to hear of any issues. It's a hot mess :(

FWIW:

I am running the latest firmware. 4.3.28 on 2 UAP-AC-PRO's, they both carry about 20 or 30 clients each. I just looked, both have been up for 16 days, and one is at 33.4% memory and the other is at 33.3% memory.

With triple the clients that I have, is it possible that this would be normal? Is 80 clients pushing the envelope on these AP's? Just curious myself.

3
RumbaarOP•

They should handle 200+ clients. I'm now running at 15/17% CPU usage agate a restart/downgrade. I'll see how it goes, and see if it rises to max again over a week or so.

2
b1gtedUnifi User•

good to know, I hadn't looked up exactly what the limit was on clients for these particular models.

Please keep us informed on how it goes. I would like to know if the downgrade fixed your issue or not.

Thanks!

I only have 12 clients on mine and most are just things connected and doing nothing at the moment (tablets, kindles, etc)- home use. Memory is at 50% +/-. Been up for 200 days, which is pretty much just the last time we lost power. Also on 4.3.28. I have it on auto-update because I'm lazy and it's just home use...

Edit: Also 90% CPU use after looking.

Its not the memory.. Its the CPU

Oops. Just looked cpu is even less. Like 15%

Checked my two UAP-AC-Pros running in my office running 4.3.28.11361 and no issues on either one. Running with a USG-3P on version 4.4.55.5377096.

If it matters, running a cloud key with controller software version 6.1.71

3
RumbaarOP•

Thx for checking, how many clients do you normally service? Prior to a week or so ago, I was running version 5 controller. But upgraded to try and see it would fix the issue.

2
Donut-Farts•

Our average wireless client load rarely passes 30, but when it does it's for events where we can have over 100 clients simultaneously. No issues yet

2
RumbaarOP•

Ah, so they are temporary clients and not persistently services clients?

2
Donut-Farts•

Not typically. We typically have 20-25 regular clients but host events where we get an additional 75-100 clients for 6-8 hours at a time

where do you check CPU usage? I only see memory

1

It’s under statistics

Where do we see CPU usage? I only see memory.

3
bat-fink•

Yeah, all I see is memory too. But my UDM-PRO and UAP-AC-PRO's are all up to date.

2
b1gtedUnifi User•

It’s under the statistics option.

1
kayak83•

Thanks. Curiously, I had to revert to classic settings UI to get the statistics page to show. Anyway, I'm now seeing that my AP is running 78-80% 90% CPU. Down the next rabbit hole I go...

1
b1gtedUnifi User•

You shouldn't have to go to classic. I was referring to statistics from the iPhone app. But if you are on your PC and are in your dashboard, then go-to devices. You can turn on memory and CPU under the filters of that page.

I meant that for some reason the Statistics page wouldn't load until I switched the UI back over to classic.

Also, found that on PC you can just hover over the device and it'll show CPU and memory load. But, mine shows 8% CPU when I do that and 80% CPU on the Statistics page. That's...quite a discrepancy.

I'm on Android and always just go to the browser bookmark I have in Firefox. I'll give the app a try.

WeirdEngineerDude•

FYI, just checked my three NanoHD’s and they aren’t doing that. Must be model specific.

2
RumbaarOP•

Thanks for checking, yeah the nanoHD appear to running fundamentally different firmware

1
julietscause•

I had to bump back down to 4.3.21 for various reasons.

Have you tried that?

2
RumbaarOP•

I've now downgraded to 4.3.24 and see how that goes, will go further down if that doesn't help.

1
julietscause•

We use wireless uplink and 4.3.21 seems to have the least amount of issues for our environment.

I've got a site with about 20 UAP-AC-Pros, many of which are having similar issues. If they're not rebooted every week or so they'll start having issues - the specifics vary, but they'll generally stop responding to the controller and some will start having issues with RADIUS auth etc.

1
RumbaarOP•

That's not good to read. Yeah when it's sitting at 98% for hours on end, the reliability goes down for me. Not being able to force an even split over AP is something I wish I manage better within the system. My AP a are above and below each other on a multilevel install.

1
ebenenspinneUnifi User•

I never install any UniFi updates until I’m forced to.

1
RumbaarOP•

I tend to be like this, only recently went to version 6 of the controller. But in two minds, if I leave to long and then have to, the jump in firmware can be another source of issue that needs to be managed.

1
dexahexatris•

Where do you check CPU usage? I only see memory usage in the unifi software (new interface).

Edit: Nevermind, it's a hidden column under the UNIFI DEVICES section.

1
bat-fink•

yeah i see it now. u/Rumbaar

1 UAP-AC-PRO at ~13% cpu load with 3 devices 1 UAP-AC-PRO at ~9% cpu load with 17 devices

Both are on 4.3.28 firmware.

3
RumbaarOP•

Thanks for that, not sure if it's when it has to service a number of clients or type of client. Yeah in the new interface is not as good as the old for a meaningful dashboard.

1
dlangille•

Mine are on 4.3.28.11361 - no such issues.

They have 187 days of uptime. Sorry, I can't help more than that.

1
RumbaarOP•

How many clients do they service?

2
dlangille•

At present, 17 and 18 clients each.
