This is true with every specialty. The higher-ups are making unfathomable amounts of money. They are only thinking about their nest eggs, everyone else be damned.

ENTP•

The bill specifies that they must be supervised. It is imperative that you refuse to supervise. No supervision, no scope creep.

17
AffectionateAd6068OP•

U have faith in that? Those will be deemed ‘antiquated laws that serve as barriers to care’ and it that supervision requirement will disappear.

19
[deleted]•

That is true if there is supervision, if they are never allowed the inch they are unable to take the mile.

6
Monkey__Shit•

Can’t stress this enough. Don’t give an inch because they eventually will take the mile. Don’t even let them practice supervised. Giving them this is giving an inch .

No field is safe from ML scope creep!

except pathology!

Don’t be too sure!

Many thought the same if radiology, even when techs were leaving comments about being IR experts.

Jfc. Just create two classes of physicians, train unmatched physicians in these midlevels fields. Why the fuck do we train other professions that turn around and shit on us.

39
Monkey__Shit•

I don’t think I’m ready to entrust my MRI reads to a midlevel 😔

Diagnostic fields like rads and path need highly skilled person. Fucking up a diagnosis here is catastrophic.

33
ENTP•

Every field of medicine needs a highly skilled person. There is no safe place for lowlevels.

31
propositionjoe11•

The skills for reads is more comparable to surgery than medicine. The attitude is embarrassing but it’s a reflection that the fear of mid level creep doesn’t really exist within the rads community (and for some good reason).

2
deer_fish•

I can the radiologists they represent are firmly against it. Another failure of our advocacy groups..

31
VarsH6•

Because the radiologists just want to keep reading films rather than interact with patients and families for procedures they should be doing. This happened when I took Peds rads. The RRA would do all the procedures like cathing and assessing for VUR and the radiologist just sat in the dark reading it all but billing for both.

AffectionateAd6068OP•

This is eerily similar to how things started with CRNAs for Anesthesiologists. And look how that went and the current state of ML scope creep in that field!

27

Oh so that’s who missed the pneumothorax in my ICU patient who suddenly became hypoxic. They literally copy and pasted from the previous read that morning. Fortunately I look at my own imagining but I thought it was weird it was “read” by someone who didn’t have DO/MD after their name.

I’m genuinely curious about this subject - when and how are NPs trained in the diagnostic interpretation of radiologic imaging?

Would it have been your fault if something even worse had happened?

It astounds me how politically stupid people are.

Midlevels, wokeness, all this nonsense begins reasonably. Everybody says "oh it won't go that far". Then it does. Then it goes too far and "you can't stop it." Every fucking time--and yet people never see it coming, and if you point it out you're a conspiracy theorist.

Guess I better be a boomer doc and rely on clinical reasoning only now….

[deleted]•

The issue it FPA. What's their stance on that?

6
AffectionateAd6068OP•

It doesn’t matter - RRAs will eventually insist they should have it and will try to get it legislatively. Don’t need another field to fall into this trap.

9
[deleted]•

I see the concern, but this sub isn't about the elimination of midlevels. Just the restriction of independent practice for non-physicians.

Also, aren't there already PAs in radiology?

-7
tryanddoxxmenow•

Depends on the person. I'd be good with the complete elimination of midlevels 🤷‍♀

12
[deleted]•

Understandable. But I just wanted to state that isn't in the sub's scope.

But I do understand the frustration. Midlevels before me have screwed up a lot, and hurt patients along the way. Maybe we can learn that midlevel FPA is harmful to patients, or maybe it's too late to fix it, but I'll die on that hill.

Yo I don’t even trust a radiologist read sometimes! That’s insane….

I’m confused. The ACR states the bill isn’t about letting them practice independently. They also say they actively oppose independent practice from radiologists (i.e., they must be under a radiologists license for their services to be billed.)

Am I missing something? Is this bill changing the narrative that radiologists don’t have to be in the room or be the ones to order a test/procedure for a patient? I’m legit confused haha

1
AffectionateAd6068OP•

This is where ML scope creep starts!

1
superboredest•

The ACRs opinion is bought and paid for. Like everyone else, they've chosen to sell the next generation up the river so they can puff up their retirement accounts a little more on the way out.

bladex1234•

I’ll be honest, mid levels are not the long term issue when it comes to radiology. AI is starting to outperform radiologists in image interpretation. Interventional radiology, on the other hand, is not going anywhere.

Making no sense there bud

Meant to say interventional
