Topics of interest in histopathology for FYs

Foundation

I've been asked to give another presentation to FYs in my area of histopathology - good sign I suppose!

These are 30-45 minute didactic teaching sessions with question time. I last presented on what we do in the lab, the process of tissue to slide and our role in cancer multidisciplinary meetings.

I'm hoping to gather some ideas of what other medics would be interested in knowing. My concern is that it can easily get too complex e.g. I'm thinking of teaching principles of molecular pathology tests - e.g. lung cancers (EGFR,ALK,ROS1), colorectal (MMR) as it's relevant medically and surgically but it's all acronyms and gets hard to remember. If anyone else has any suggestions I'm all ears! :)

I find the things that juniors are involved most in is cytology. They're not too involved in biopsies or resections to be honest but they're always sending in pleural and ascitic fluid, so maybe do a bit on that?

I think this will be the winner.

Talk about the different tests that can be done and should be ordered for Pleural/Ascitic fluid. Maybe a couple of case examples from the history to the interpretation of the fluid findings in order to help make a diagnosis

It's super clinically relevant to their upcoming work.

Thanks! That's a good one I didn't think about. We do get containers after containers of fluid sent to us haha

I did a FY1 job in pathology and I found these topics interesting and not too complex for my level:

I quite liked dermatopathology (esp. differentiating between skin cancers based on histological features)

Acute abdomen - histological gesture of Appendicitis, cholecystitis, diverticulitis, perf bowel etc

GI Tract histology and common GI tract pathologies

In my fy teaching on pathology I liked the part explained what the creepy reg did to get his desk moved out the main office and placed in with the admin staff down the corridor.

ST1 Histopathology now, but when I did my shadowing as an F2, one of the consultants did a teaching on interesting autopsy findings, which I found really cool. Keeping it like a case based discussion with lots of pictures would help keep them interested
