[2281] Unheritance, part 1 [of 2]

This is the first few sections of a short story. It's set in Ireland, and there's a touch of vernacular phrasing in the voice, but (I hope) nothing too bewildering.

The story cuts off right where the character's fortunes have changed, so I suppose I'd like to know if it has made you want to read on. Also comments on language, voice, sentence, description, dialogue, characterization etc would all be helpful. Thanks!
