I showed my friend who is a lawyer and he said to go ahead and let them because they will help the people that don’t have access to lawyers.

Hmm… Wasn’t something similar said about a certain other profession?

Yeah f poor people. Let them have all the mediocre services instead of trying to find real solutions.

Honestly I always found this weird. If we really wanted better healthcare for all, we’d make it more accessible and affordable for patients, make medical education and training more accessible for students, and so many other ways.

Why did they think making a whole new profession for that was the right choice?

Does this sound eerily familiar? ML scope creep knows no bounds! And has no industry or precession restrictions!

“If Ms. Harlow wanted to practice law after completing the M.S.L. program, she wouldn’t be able to do so. Instead, she would have to be accepted by a law school with a three-year program accredited by the American Bar Association, and pass a state bar exam. The ABA and state bar examiners maintain that these requirements establish a minimum standard of quality for lawyers and protect clients from incompetent representation.”

So fucking absurd. “Wanted to practice law”.. without putting in the work. It’s like everyone wants an Olympic medal while sitting on their couch at home. Why the fuck does she think she should be able to practice law without going to school and passing the bar?

I sent this to my husband, who is a law student, and this was this exact reply:

“There is absolutely zero chance they ever admit non-lawyers to the bar, because the bar is run entirely by lawyers, and lawyers love credentialism and passing down suffering to those that follow behind them. They won’t even let us practice with diploma privilege after we get a JD. They are not about to allow a bunch of University of Phoenix slapdicks that completed a 1 year night class piss on the rug at their party.”

I just hope he’s right and that lawyers are better at protecting their profession than doctors are.

Maybe if JD's feel threatened they will have an incentive to push back on ML scope creep across the board.

A 1 year master's program about law in general, and a 3 year doctorate (JD) program about practicing law for other people are two very different things. The writer should be embarrassed for failing that basic level of understanding.

Technically, you do not have to go to law school to be a lawyer in California. You can be an apprentice for a few years and take the bar and practice. California has one of the hardest bar exams in the country, so there probably hasn’t been anybody who has successfully done this in some time.

I thought Kim Kardashian did this

I think she said she was going to try. Did she succeed?

Edit: just looked it up. One requirement of becoming a lawyer that way is that you have to pass the “baby bar” after a year of being an apprentice, and she apparently failed it twice.
